This is a piece of Neon history. One of the original '94 build ACR sedans from the days when an SCCA competition license was required to order one. I have a massive folder containing all of the history on the car.
1995 Plymouth ACR sedan. Rust free California car that is near mint condition with only 50k miles! Bought new to be raced in SCCA showroom stock class road racing. The car has a bolt-in roll cage and 5-point belt that could easily be removed if that's not your thing (I am able to do this for you if needed).
The car was not raced much, and driven more on the street. It's in fantastic condition and drives / looks as if still new. It's a very well taken care of car. The car has a matching full-size spare and 5 new Yokohama tires. There are very few modifications including an ice-man intake, larger front swaybar, dynomax muffler, new Koni Yellows with eibach coil-over springs, and a new set of shifter bushings.
Usual ACR build:
3.94 final drive with .81 fifth gear
quicker ratio steering rack
larger front hubs/bearings
four-wheel disc brakes
No A/C or power options
The car was originally a radio delete car, but an aftermarket CD player w/ aux input was added as well as a pair of front door speakers. There is still no antenna, so no radio service.
The car looks very nice, handles wonderfully, and sounds great. It is truly a pleasure to drive and own. In December 2009, I drove this car from Los Angeles, California to Toronto, Ontario and then home to St. Louis, Missouri. It was a 4,405 mile trip over the course of two weeks and the car performed wonderfully. I averaged 28mpg. I had the timing belt changed before the trip, so the timing belt has only 4,405 miles on it.
The car was a race car and has a few small bruises from racing days. There is a small wrinkle in the LF fender, some rock chips in the paint, and a bit of paint rubbed off on the leading edge of the rear bumper cover. None of these are very noticeable and are not items that I would even consider fixing. I think they add some character and are part of the history of the car. The car does still have a few of the original racing decals on it.
The dynomax muffler has a bad rattle in it... I think a weld must have gone bad inside of it. There is also a fairly loud rattle in the dash somewhere. I'll try to fix that one myself if I can figure out what it is. It was annoying on my 4,405 mile road trip! The final issue is that the throwout bearing is noisy when the car is cold. I am told that this has been the case since the car was new, but I imagine that they weren't doing much warranty work with cars that were being raced. The noise goes away as soon as the car warms up a bit and the noise is not even present on warm days. I'd consider a throwout bearing replacement in the future, but it's not an immediate concern.
I do not need to sell this car. I absolutely adore it, but really don't have the time to play with it. I'm offering it for sale at a fair price given the condition and rarity. I am not very flexible and I'm not entertaining offers. :-)
$4,500 Located in St. Louis, Missouri. Delivery is available and subject to negotiation.
Side note; This is the type of car we all wish the manufactures were still building. It's a no-nonsense bare bones car that is all about providing an exciting driving experience while also being affordable and economical. There is no traction control, no tire pressure monitors, no 19" wheels with tires that no one can afford, and most importantly: no goofy hybrid green car bs. 30mpg, affordable to own, and a world class driving experience.
Speaking of driving experience, I've owned well over fifty different cars and probably driven over a hundred performance cars in my lifetime. Without a doubt, the first generation Neon ACR provides the best driving experience I have ever felt second only to the Lotus Elise. For that direct feeling and connection to the road; I prefer the Neon ACR over anything else I have owned including a G35, S2000, MR2 spyder, as well as both generations of Miata.
