I've been a "Victim" of Unintended Acceleration in a Hyundai Accent - just a few weeks ago.
I was pulling into my parking space at work one morning, put my foot on the brake to stop - and the car surged-ahead to the curb-stop. As I pressed harder on the brake, the engine revved louder and louder, straining with every one of its 94hp against my efforts to rein them in.........
Turns out, as I was mashin' the brake pedal - the very edge of my Fat Foot was clipping the gas. As there is almost no "springback" to the pedals on cars these days, it just sorta "came along for the ride". So, I switched-off the car.
I point this out, as I was ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that I wasn't "on the gas" by accident, as a few of these drivers have claimed. It startled me, and I felt really stupid when the realization hit me.
The Deaths of these people in these cars are tragic, and I am not by any means belittling them or the loss their families feel. But a person is responsible for their own destiny - the situation where the four people were killed in the Lexus was completely preventable: by the Driver. When a person panics and essentially throws his hands up and lets fate decide............. it WILL be decided, and the people affected won't like that decision.
