STR - What are you building?

What are you building for STR?

    Include your full name

    Year, make and model

    Location

    List of current mods

    List of future mods.

Include pictures if you have them, especially of your home made mods.

Another plus would be to list total weights and weight lost from each item.

    Power gained from mods.

Let's keep this on topic and professional.

    I shall start :)

    San Diego

I bought the car yesterday, but it has Koni shocks, Eibach Sportline springs, Mazdaspeed swaybars and an AEM cold air intake.  The intake will need to be modified to be legal, but I will run it the way it is for a few months.

I will be doing a ton of mods, as money and time permit.  Tomorrow, 11/12/09, the car goes into the body shop to have the rear fenders rolled, hopefully it doesn't screw up the paint.  I have 2 17x9" RPF1 wheels and will be ordering another 2 shortly.  I have already tried to put these wheels on with 255/40/17 Dunlops, and it is going to be a very tough fit.  I think I will be trying the 245/35/17 Toyo R1R for my first set of tires.  Of course I will be running a nice set of coil-overs, some adjustable sway bars (thinking front only) custom exhaust, hopefully a header will come to be, hopefully a programming solution will happen.  I will put the car on a diet, with a Walmart battery, and remove the AC.  If wings stay in the rules, it will be after the bulk of the other modifications, the cherry ontop of the sundae.  A pair of nice race seats will be on the long term plan, as well as bushing packages.  As I make changes I will edit this post with dates.

I am looking forward to this class, it should be an epic battle.

Re: STR - What are you building?

I'm building an 06 S2000.  I hope it's fast.  I wrote letters for this class 4 years ago and I think an ST S2000 is a beautiful thing.

It'll have all the regular st mods.

    Here's a pic for fun:

    2006 Mazda MX5 Touring (5-speed)

Factory limited slip differential.  (I forgot to include this in my original post.)

Stock exhaust with removed resonator and Goodwin Roadstersport "Q" muffler.  I will cry some tears as I remove my Goodwin header & midpipe, because the car runs and sounds great.

Currently I have JIC springs and shocks, but plan on upgrading to Fat Cat Bilstein Shocks or AST from Vorshlag.

RX8 front sway bar and no rear sway bar.

17x9 +45 Enkei RP-F1 wheels with 245/35/17 Toyo R1R tires.  I may consider 6UL wheels if they come out and are available.

Sniper ECU Reflash.  I am going to use my current reflash, but will consider custom tuning or a reflash from Delta Force based on my modification changes.

These are my main goals in 2010, but would also like to do a light battery and intake.

Nice.  It has only been a week, but I miss my Laguna Blue S2000 already :)

What have you done to her?  Which wheels are those?  Tires, size and model?

Very nice Brian.  You and I should keep in touch, sounds like we are going down the same path.

    Update:

I had the fenders rolled by my bodyshop, they did an amazing job.  First they had to undo the horrible hammer job, then roll them back up, and they got them flat against the fenders.  Now the RPF1's, 17x7.5" 45mm with 225/45/17 Star Specs and 17x9" 45mm with 255/40/17, fit with very little rubbing.

I will try to have the car aligned this week, at my work, which should make the clearance even better.  I think I am going to order a pair of 17x9" 45 RPF1's and put my 225's on them for this weekends event, and see how they fit.

Here is a few pics of my car, and a close-up of the nice fender work.

Re: STR - What are you building?

So how did they fit this weekend?

My wheels are 17x9 volks with 63et.  The car is pretty dang low and there's no rubbing.  It's got Moton Clubsports and some springs and a K+N intake.  That's it for now.  I drove it yesterday and against people I usually try to match times with in the CRX and I was able to do so after about 8 runs.  This car is not a CRX.  It has power and weight- two things the CRX did not have.

I'm pleased with how the car is coming along.  I just need to learn how to drive it.

Re: STR - What are you building?

    Hi Jeff,

It does look like we are on a similar build path.  I have been running my car in CSP the last couple of years, but it is horrible under-prepared.  STR should give me a chance to build a competitive car, so I am excited about that.

Thank you for you efforts and posting pictures regarding tire fitment.  I should have much trouble with 245/35/17 Toyo's, but it is nice to see that the 255/40's will work too if I go that direction in the future.

Good luck with your build and keep us posted.

    2008 MX5 Sport (5 speed)

RX8 yellow dot sway bars, 17X9 RPF1's, Rolled rear fenders, home built rear exaust (5 lbs.- stock 26lbs.)

Waiting on the AST group buy for shocks and springs,(http://www.vorshlag.com/forums/showthread.php?p=53785&posted=1#post53785)

probably going to start with 245/40;17 Star specs,

Future plans include Momo start seat, Sniper or Xede tune, some type of cold air intake, and possibly the header that is being worked out right now. Diff, probably stock, and a Maxq (the driver needs as much work as the car).

Noooooo! Don't take out the A/C, no longer legal as of 2009.

Wouldn't it be legal if you converted it to a Club Spec?

     Sebastian,

It is legal for me to remove the AC, a base MX5 didn't have AC.  My car is a base with AC added, and of course a leather wheel.

Re: STR - What are you building?

you might need to change to the SV wheel, too.  there's no allowance to change an airbag wheel (even under C&C), and the leather wheel only came w/ A/C.

Re: STR - What are you building?

I think Jeff could argue that he's only changed the cover on the steering wheel.  It appears from the pictures that he doesn't have fog lights, which means he doesn't have cruise control, which means the steering wheel is identical to the one from the Club Spec/SV, except for the leather cover.

Re: STR - What are you building?

You guys will beat me and beat me badly. I've got a barely prepped 99 Miata Sport. When one of the original Bilsteins blew I swapped the suspension to FM springs over AGX shocks. I could go hardcore if I wanted but my '90 STS Miata, which is more hardcore, is not a huge joy to drive on the street - I don't want to lose the 99's comfie highway ride. Other than the above suspension, RB front sway, and FM axle-back exhaust it's box stock. It'll use the same second-hand RE01Rs on RPF1s that I ran in STS this year.

The plan as of right now is to run the 90 in STS in SCCA events (WDCR region), and the 99 in STR with Autocrossers Inc. which is a local quasi-SCCA group. Or the other way around depending on who shows up to run what in each group. The 90 is more competitive but the 99 is more fun to drive even if the competition will be far better prepped. Besides, someone's gotta finish last.
