Nicholas was the son/brother of two of our solo friends, Tom and Sara Sotiropoulos.  The 4th of July "OH SAY CAN YOU SEE - SOLO FOR NICHOLAS" Event is a charity event in his honor.  Tom told us that there were several charities that were so good to Nicholas and the family during all the years that Nicholas bravely battled childhood cancer that we thought that the St. Louis Solo Community would try to help those who helped them with some charity efforts.  Tom was sure that Nicholas would have loved a Solo Event, as he knew how much his dad and sister love chasing those cones with us.

    Nicholas Dean Sotiropoulos - (July 20, 1993 - May 3, 2009)
Nicholas Dean Sotiropoulos, age 15, of O'Fallon, IL born July 20, 1993 in Belleville, IL died on Sunday, May 3, 2009 at his residence. He was a member of Blessed Savior Lutheran Church, O'Fallon, IL. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Telford Boyer. He is survived by his parents, Thomas and Jody, nee Boyer, Sotiropoulos; his brothers and sisters, Sarah, Michael, Samuel and Rachel Sotiropoulos of O'Fallon, IL; his grandparents, Dr. Peter (Betty) Sotiropoulos of Belleville, IL; his grandmother, Joan Boyer of Odessa, MO; and he was a dear nephew and cousin. His father Tom, and sister Sara are St. Louis Region SCCA Soloists. Nicholas was a beloved son and brother and he  taught others the new meaning to words like courage, bravery, generosity and love. He touched lives in a way that few can. The terrible pain and sense of loss everyone feels is tempered by the joy of the memories of a life shared. Nicholas will be loved and remembered always. Nicholas' family would like to thank everyone who has supported him through his journey, and especially to the charities who helped him in his battle with cancer.

This event is collecting money for the Friends of Kids with Cancer – Helping Kids with Cancer Be Kids!

Re: July Solo "OH SAY CAN YOU SEE - SOLO FOR NICHOLAS"

What a neat charity that Tom and Sara and thier family chose:

About Friends of Kids with Cancer

teens and Jill togetherFriends was founded in 1992 by Jill Turec, a Developmental Specialist, along with Molly Henry and Suzie Snowden, who were parents of children in treatment who witnessed their kids struggles and saw the need for diversions in their lives.

Friends of Kids with Cancer is unique:

    • The entire family unit benefits from our services
    • All money raised through events, grants and donations stays in the St. Louis Community
    • Focuses on the importance of these special kids and their families getting through TODAY
    • Fills in the gaps from treatment to make each child WHOLE again

    Our History of Helping Kids

josh and camden huggingA simple idea.
Friends of Kids with Cancer has a proud 16 year history in the St. Louis area. Concerned parents Molly Henry and Suzie Snowden teamed up with Jill Turec, a Developmental Specialist at St. John's Mercy Medical Center, because they saw the great need for the simplest of words: fun. What they created to solve the problem, a toy closet right where the kids get their treatment, turned out to be a revolutionary idea. At the very least, they thought, the kids would have something to play with during the long hours in the office, or maybe even take their mind off of the needles and shots from intense treatments. Low and behold, everyone involved saw a marked change in the kids. Instead of focusing on the severity of the treatments, kids were excited to see what new toy or game they would get to play with. Seizing the moment, Friends thrust TVs, movies, board games and anything else to divert their attention and replace smiles where there had once been only tears. Even nurses and doctors reaped the benefits, with more tools added to their arsenal to get children to cooperate with difficult procedures.Through this cooperative effort between parents, kids and medical staff...Friends was born.

This simple idea has since developed into a philosophy that Friends abides by today. Treatments shouldn't just attack viruses and cells in a child's body; the mind, soul and most importantly, the heart need to be cared for as well. Treating the whole child has brought new, creative programs into the treatment centers through Friends of Kids with Cancer.

    The glue.
There are many organizations that benefit kids with cancer. Some grant a once-in-a-lifetime type wish, while some fund research to cure this terrible disease for future generations. While Friends looks forward to shuttering its doors one day when that happens, we feel like there is a major need in their day-to-day lives. Friends has a unique niche for the families of children battling cancer: the glue.
Cancer doesn't just fight the blood cells in a child's body; it puts a strain on the entire family physically, mentally and financially. Fighting cancer is tough enough, but doing so as a child with so little life experience, as well as the social and emotional handicaps that treatments place upon the child, can make it extremely trying. That's why Friends is devoted to enriching the daily lives of these special kids, as well as the whole family, through our programs. We fill in the recreational, educational and emotional needs of the child, his or her siblings and the parents. Whether it's Munchie Mondays taking care of a meal for the family at the treatment center one day a week, or Art Therapy bringing the child's inner thoughts and feelings to the surface of a piece of paper through the tip of a pencil, Friends fills in the little things that sometimes get lost. And for kids going through cancer and the family behind them, little things usually become the big things. And we make sure they...stick.

    The power of positive thinking.
Friends doesn't create miracles; those are left to modern medicine and the doctors and nurses administer them. What we do, however, is create the positive frame of mind in which they are achieved. Universally, being happy, positive and motivated makes every child more likely to succeed at whatever their goal happens to be. We believe the same applies here. Friends cultivates mental well being with programs that help children cope with the challenges they face, make the best out of the situation they are in, and most importantly, remember that its ok to still just be a kid.

Re: July Solo "OH SAY CAN YOU SEE - SOLO FOR NICHOLAS"

I hate that we will miss this great event.  I contributed some toys cars and NASCAR stuff for the cause so bid often and bid a lot for a good cause.  We will be there in spirit with Tom and family and all you racer people.

Have fun everyone.  We will be in Peru (Indiana) for the Machu Picchu National Tour event.  I am going up to allow Sam Strano to help me realize how much better I have gotten (or NOT!).  He beat me by 6 seconds over two days at Nationals so how much worse could I be?  Go F-Stock!   Tongue Tied

    Re: Announcing

I will be there and hopefully with a running RX7. We are going to try to fire up the new computer tonight to see if we can get a baseline tune loaded in. Had a problem with my interface cable yesterday or we would have gotten the initial setup done then. Keeping my fingers crossed that I didn't do anything too stupid in the wiring.

I'm trying to decide if I can come or not. I've been invited to a birthday/4th of July thing with my family back home up in Wisconsin. But I really really enjoy autocross. I'm so torn. Tongue Tied

I'll be there, give me a couple of days to make sure the car is sorted out.  I don't have a co-driver at this point.

New brakes, new alternator, new tires, new wheels, new shocks, new bushings, new crank pulley, new belts, new CAI, new battery, new steering wheel, new exhaust, new stickers, new radio, and I even vaccumed the interior.

Just registered.  What is this NIS class?  Is that just for people that don't plan on coming or does a bigger part of your registration get donated if you register as NIS?
