I was a great weekend. The weather was perfect, got to meet Bill Hagerty, seemed like like everything was going ot be fine, until.....Q2.

Had a bit of a mechcanical in the Q2 when I lost 3rd gear. I had the transmission swapped with a spare I has just in time for the race Sunday. The good news was that I qualified 1st in SSC (out of 2 cars) and had a great start. I even manged to run a 2:54 in Q1.

Hoosiers were hooked up, Mazda was moving!! For 2 laps.......

Then, lost 3rd gear on the backup trans.

Completed 8 laps and still managed to finish in 2nd place. Oh well, points is points.

At this point, I don't think I'm going to the Runoffs and Autobahn will be my last event of 2008. Do think theres any chance you'll make it to Autobahn?

Cool, sounds like you were on your game this weekend, sux about the trans ,Mike T can fix it I’m sure

I really wish CenDiv hadn’t moved the Autobahn race date this year. I will have to wait and see how the Grattan weekend goes first

I take it Dan G. is not ready for driving duties yet?

Re: Another day at the beach

Yup, Dan G. is still nursing broken ribs and wasn't ready to compete.  He said that he'll be running next season.

I assumed correctly that good-looking Twisted Sista looks more like her mom than Dan. Stick out tongue She'll be happy to know that her car is competitive in SSC and can run with boys next year.  Bill H. had a good time with us and we were happy to see him at RA.  I hadn't seen him since the Runoffs (where we both did much too much crunching of our cars).

Gino and I seem to have run into problems at nearly the same times during the Cat Nat.  Mine came on, I think, the third lap when I tried to shift up exiting Canada Corner and found that the car didn't want to run in any gear-splutter, splutter.  It was the first sour moment of the weekend because the rented RSX-S had run like a top on Saturday and I was just totally relaxed and stroking around all day.  We were leading SSB and trying to pass some laggard (as in a bit slow) SM drivers who were busy racing each other and not letting faster cars through  (perhaps this is what I get for not trying to qualify a bit faster) when the missing started.

I limped the car through 13  and 14 with a guess that it was only working in fourth gear, stumbling badly.  I had to let nearly everyone pass, dropping to close to last with some mighty slow laps before the stumbling began to ease.  It seemed to be a fuel pickup problem which was slowly clearing but made sharper corners a guessing game. I don't like having the fuel shut off at full speed in corner one--talk about rapid change in your line!    Thank goodness it didn't do that in the Carousel or the Kink!

It cleared up on straights so that I could run well there, and finally let me run the last two laps or so without a problem.  I repassed poor Gino in the middle of the race, limping along and surely unhappy at not getting to run with Bill.  I stubbornly ran to the end and am glad that I did to find out that the missing cleared up.

Does this sound familiar to any RSX or Honda drivers?  I was renting, but any help at solving the problem would be appreciated by the owner, I'm certain. I think it was a fuel pickup problem, but what else might have happened?  The car sat after the 2005 Runoffs until now, except for a brief test drive on the street a matter of days ago, then it ran great all day Saturday.

I really enjoyed driving the car, not having driven at all this year and not having driven a FWD for some years, it was fun.  I was holding back to avoid any trouble with the car and just beginning to get racy when the missing began.  The Hondas and Acuras will be formidable at the Runoffs next year.

    Jack:

How much gas was left in the car from the last race? If you got down into the dead stuff, it would run like it was trying to burn water.

Re: Another day at the beach

    Brad,

It had a few gallons put in it on Friday and I put 6 more in before I ran Saturday.  It gave no indication of pickup problems all day Sat. and ran smoothly.  It also gave no indication of a problem Sunday morning when I did one lap to bed some new pads.

The only thing I can think of about fuel is that I put in Mobil on Saturday and don't know if it had ethanol in it or not ( the pump didn't say ethanol was in it) and I couldn't find non-ethanol premium around Sat. night so I put BP Ultimate with 10% ethanol in on Sunday.  Ethanol will pick up water in the tank and create some gunk, but it seems strange.  Perhaps the BP gas had some water in it, or something, but it cleared up gradually.

I would not be amazed to find that some water was in the gas tank after such a long time sitting unused, but I would have expected something to happen on the first day of running. Joe E. had drained the tank down so I could weigh the car, but I don't know if he took it to bone dry.  It ran well on the pace lap and through the first two, almost three laps before suddenly crapping out.  It was not totally consistent a miss, either.  It missed on right turns mostly, but also on some lefts.  It didn't miss in the two really fast but smoothly entered corners (Carousel and Kink) but moslty on the corners requiring a quick turn-in.

The more I think about it, the more I suspect some water or gunk gradually was picked up by the last gas I put in.

Hey, how can I get this picture Gino posted out of the top of my screen--it's blocking the top of everything.

Sorry about the picture, I don't know how that happened. I've tried everything. Maybe some one should start a new posting.
