Re: Event 2 course comments
Bill-
I think the course turned out to be nicely flowing with a balanced mix of elements. I heard a lot of good comments from others. It definately rewarded the best line and you had to know when to go fast and where to go slow. It turned out to be a 51 sec. course for fast drivers and a 58 second course for most of the rest. My best run would have been my last run (53.9, down from 54.6), but somehow the last cone before the finish seemed to jump in my way. Kyle Mavis co-drove and beat me by like 0.030 or so. Good for him, I say. I think he finished 4th on PAX and I should have been 5th.

Re: Event 2 course comments
The offset on the "hill side" of the course was really fun! I didn't like the really sharp turn that was directly in front of the timing van because I could never get through there correct. haha.
On a safety note that finish was WAY WAY WAY to fast if you took the correct line. After the last sweeper if you got all the way to the right you could from that last sweeper to the finish with only a tap of the breaks. There are several solid black marks from people slamming on the brakes after the finish trying to stop before the end of the cones.

Re: Event 2 course comments
I'd have to agree with George34 about the speed at the finish. I won't say how fast I was going in two places, but in my opinion it would be best to reduce the speeds just a bit. Other than that, I think it was an outstanding course. Maybe even better than last time (which was exceptional). There were technical spots, like Kyle said, that if done correctly paid off well. Nice job Bill (and others).

Re: Event 2 course comments
Feedback makes it better for next time! With that said, I think everyone did a good job in getting the cars slowed right away after the finish. With it being a fairly straight shot, there was no out of control spins through the finish.... just that poor cone took a beating on the outside just prior to the finish :)
We did get excellent feedback, before the event, about the finish, which led to the "shrinking" of the cool down lane. I'm glad we did that.
I had a blast with the course, the slow bump near the timing van is always an issue but it is the best way to safely through there, trust me... it is really needed! The offset gates right after was a fun challenge to get right... I very much liked that over the offset slalom! The rest of the course just flowed well and my car felt smooth the entire course which is not easy to do at that site.

Re: Event 2 course comments
I think this was a course that punished you for getting off line with little area to make the time back up. I noticed my times dropping throughout the runs as I was forced to hone my lines and go slow to go fast. Thanks for letting me drive Kyle, that car is wicked fast. The sickening thing is that this marks the second time I've co-driven a blue subaru impreza and won the class while at International. Yet I still can't bring myself to buy one. Short of an Evo perhaps, they're definitely THE car to have for going fast, and driving it daily in any weather without any worries. I may have nipped you on the time sheet, but I'm positive I couldn't have beat you on raw times. I'm almost certain I'd have pushed just beyond my limit and caught that same last cone that you did on my 6th run. Your last run (barring the lat 100 feet) was a demonstration of a car and driver working together at 10/10ths. I believe you dropped 7/10ths off your previous best which was 4 runs prior. I could tell you were motivated :D I know that at least two sets of the black marks are Chris Smith's only because he's used to autox'ing a car with abs and his wagon was having incredibly touchy brake issues. In fact until I mentioned it to him he had no idea he'd put on a smoke show past the finish of his first two runs.

Re: Event 2 course comments
I was Grid Cheif for the first heat. After we got the cars in grid, I stationed my self just after finish, at grid "re-entrance" to catch re-runs. As such, I watched the "slow downs" after the finish lights. I agree that many people has "issues" after the finish, but as mentioned, mostly straightline lock-up. But, they were mostly those who did not have ABS. Not to be obnoxious, just observing, I had ABS and had no issue getting the car slowed after the "lights" nor did Mavis.

Re: Event 2 course comments
Course was a blast Bill!!!! The slow slanted H did pretty good out there, driver still has some work :) As for the finish, I have no ABS and yes, I braked hard a couple times to slow up, but nothing I could not handle. Now if someone had an issue...maybe could have been a problem to look at in future courses there. Something to look at now I guess :) All in all Bill, nice job and way to help us hard suspension guys across the hump and RR tracks. I love the tight ares (he he) and the slalom after the hump was freakin AWESOME!!! Well, hope everything comes out good for next month :) Cheers

Re: Event 2 course comments
I thought the course was awesome. I loved that I had to hit my marks to be fast. Its weird saying this, since I was 3rd on the pax, but I felt I got my butt handed to me by Chuck. My last run was a 51.9, which might have put me past Steve M. on the pax, but I had at least one cone. The course was a very nice balanced course. Looking ahead paid off. I could see MANY people who were off the gas WAY too early because they weren't looking ahead.
As for the finish, I agreed that we adjusted it properly at the start of the event. I noticed a lot of people cooking it into the finish, but most of them took out that last cone as well. I shot through there EXTREMELY fast and could stop with no problem (okay... that's not fair... my brakes are a little better than average... :) )
Thanks to everyone who helped out today and made the event a good one. Thank you to Bill Headlee, Ron Gallmeyer and Marilyn Russell who came out and helped, but didn't run (I hope I didn't forget anybody else). That was very unselfish!
See you all at the next event!

Re: Event 2 course comments
Great job BIll......as usual. I think I locked up the brakes coming off the finish a couple of times.
Todd - I wouldn't settle on your results yet....I'm not sure how close you were to Steve, but I DO know, we are still using old PAX numbers. How do we get these updated before posting results? I can't seem to find the PAX results from Event 1, but I would assume it's using the same incorrect multipliers.

Re: Event 2 course comments
Event #1 had the correct PAX, I know as I keyed them in prior to the event. Event #2 then reset PAX back to old numbers, I'll update it when I release the results this evening.

Andrew-
Can you email me the index results for the first two events (for points)? The index and class results also need to go to Steve Schnelker for the drift and John Kremer for the website.
Thanks
Bill

Re: Event 2 course comments
I thought that the course was excellent. There were tight sections and there were open sections, so it balanced the smaller nimble cars with the more powerful fast cars. To me that always makes the racing closer and more exciting. I enjoy the technical aspects of a small tight track, but when I can't use enough power to keep up with stock minis, I'm usually a little bummed. I'm sure they feel the same way when they can't keep up with the faster cars on an open track.
Regarding the finish, I think the only change I would have made is to move it closer to the last corner, slowing the speeds slightly and giving more room to stop at the end. It was a great course and I wish I could have gotten in a 6th run and some fun runs to take advantage of it. I was dropping a second a lap as I got used to my new suspension and tires, so I'm sure I'd have reached a 53 pretty easily.
Where will the results be posted? Are they usually posted in the forums? I'm pretty sure I won SMS, but I'd like to know where I was in the PAX.

Re: Event 2 course comments
Mike-
The finish did not turn out quite as I had planned. I wanted the lefthander to be a slight brake zone and then full throttle from there to generate the tidy line necessary to clear that last cone. I got the second part as it took great care for most to miss that outside cone before the finish, but I did not apparently get the brake zone before that. I moved the first opinter once, but not quite enough. That is why I'm soliciting this kind of feedback so I can get what I want on future designs (like the Coliseum event). Moving the point of the crossover was not really feasible as that spot is really the only smooth transition location across the parking row. A keen eye at thst site will show that we have found the smooth spots and use them a lot in various courses going various directions.
Thanks for the feedback.

I am wondering the same....... I want to see how bad I did. Two runs with 3 cones each, two DNFs, and then slowing down on my 5th to get a clean time.

Re: Event 2 course comments
Very fun course, and very fast. I particularly enjoyed the vehicle dynamics section right after the big hump. I would just tap the brake slightly before I went through the first left turn gate so I could get the car set up to flat foot it the rest of the way through the slalom. The weather conditions made the sealed pavement section of the lot very slick especially on R compound tires. I could never get enough heat in my tires to get them to stick well in those sections of the course so I found myself having to brake sooner then normal. Once I finally got the braking points down on my last run (although I did still overcook one corner a little) I managed to knock off 1.3 seconds off of my best run. I don't think I ever had a problem slowing the car down after the finish line even though I was flat footing the car all the way through the last kink and seriously scaring some cones. I don't think I even got my ABS to engage on the slowdown. Then again I have a lighter weight car, good performance brakes, and R compound tires so it was probably easier for me then the heavy muscle cars on street tires. All and all I give it two thumbs up.
