I am thinking about getting a 1992 Mustang LX 5.0 for some local autox fun. I have no plans to make it nationally competitive but I do want it to be fun and quick. I have been autocrossing a Mini Cooper for about 4 years now and while it is a lot of fun, low power and FWD is starting to get a little old. I would like to give a rwd v8 a try because I think I will learn more.
So with that in mind, I have a couple of questions:
1. Can the fox body mustangs take autox abuse pretty well, or is it a constant battle to keep them in god running shape? Running costs due to reliability concern me a bit.
2. I can pick one up for around $1500 and have approximately $1000 to spend on suspension (I have a separate bucket of $1000 for wheels and tires, probably R01-Rs to start with). Where is the $1000 best spent? Is it the usual approach of shocks/springs, camber plates and a rear sway bar, or is the money better spend on bracing and stiffening the chassis up a bit? Or is it a combo? Do I just drop a bunch of $$ into the rear to remedy the not so great solid rear? What parts would you recommend? Should I just plop down a grand on a Grip box from MM? (I don't care about power at this point because it will already be night and day compared to the Mini)
Classing isn't terribly important to me, I just want to have fun and learn how to drive a RWD car but I guess I would rather stay in the Street Prepared class.
Thanks!
