Had A 67 spitfire MK3 given to me the other day

Its a nice little car(I don't have any pics. yet)I'm going to pick it up this weekend. It does not have a motor or trans. but everything else is there its just been sitting in this guys back yard for years.I was thinking about putting a hayabusa streetbike motor in it,kind of like the one in GrassRoots Motorsports.I plan on autocrossing this car when its finished. What do you guys think I should do with it.( motor & trans. wise) And what SCCA solo class would I run this in.

13b rotary w/ direct top, close ratio Mazda 5 spd...no doubt. Cheap, easy to install, great power to weight, massive engine set back possible and reliable. I was involved in a rotary/Sunbeam Alpine build and it has proven to be a very, very fun car.

your about the third person to say rotary, one of my buddys I race with has a miget sitting in his shop with a rotary&5speed already in it,with a cage, and flared fenders.I think he wants $800 for it but it needs  new rotary engine.I should just buy that.

Of course there's always just spend a afternoon cleaning it up, take some pictures, and put it in hemmings as is. See how many new hoosiers somebody will give you for it.

ps I like the rotary engine idea.

If it is a really nice car and mostly complete except for the engine and transmission, maybe you should consider restoring it.

    Howdy,

With a Hyabusa motor, the car won't be legal in DM or EM.  I think it'd be ok in BM though.

Make sure to read the rules before going too far down whatever path you choose... At least, if you care about competitiveness vs. just having a cool car.

Re: Had A 67 spitfire MK3 given to me the other day

Thanks for the help guys,The car looks like your normal car thats been sitting in a field for 20 plus years. It has no top,no headlights,no taillights,no interior. Its basicly a rolling shell with one small dent back by the taillight on the pass. side.It has a nice dash, steering wheel and windsheild though.

I talked to my friend that has the 2.3L turbo ford with a 5speed trans. this morning, I think I'm going to do this instead.

would the car still be in E-Mod with the turbo 2.3L

    I'm going to run 20x9x13 R35 slicks

well I got the 2.3L turbo motor, and T5 trans. for it and mustangII front spindles rotors&brakes, adj. front A arms,RX7 disc. brake rear end 4.11's LSD,and a bunch of other stuff.

Here is what it looked like when I first pushed it out of the guys back yard.

And this is right after I got it home and cleaned up some with the pressure washer.

    Now the real fun starts.

And how often do you find one of those in a junk yard,or for less then what it will cost me to build my complete car.LOL

What kind of power do those motors make, with this 2.3L turbo I should be around 300-350rwhp

Re: Had A 67 spitfire MK3 given to me the other day

Finding one laying around is going to be tough. but not impossible as i've seen a few.

    Power wise 260 hp / 260 ft-lbs @crank stock

Mine is around 300 hp / 290 @ the wheels.

If i could get my hands on a certain hard to get tune you can have 400 ft-lbs using mostly stock components (including stock turbo!). good luck getting that tune unless you're a factory supported race team.

Re: Had A 67 spitfire MK3 given to me the other day

Why not just bring it to a good dyno tune shop, I bit they can find 400 ft-lbs.

I could get 400 if I bring mine to a good dyno tune shop, but I would have to trailer it  about 4-6 hours to a good shop.
