New guy needs a bit of help...

    Hey  all,

I just need a starting point..  I have had some racing school.  I did quite well and it gave me the itch.  My buddy and I want to go in on a car together and take turns racing and split the cost.  We were looking at a CRX or maybe a Focus.  I live in south florida about 30 mins from Moroso, and a few hours from Sebring.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Thanks

probably best to read the rules a few times.  that might lead you to some decisions regarding class, and therefore car.  somewhere in there a budget would probably start to appear...

but with respect, take time and do your homework thoroughly.

folks here will be glad to help, but your initial question is too broad to tackle..

    definetly need a budget...

after you both check out the rules a time or two, my suggestion is to attend a race. You will be able to see all the different cars on the track and up close and talk to anyone that has the time. And most people are willing to chat about their car, it's one of the reasons we are there. it's also a social event...

then read the rules another time or two, they'll make more sense now.

then it's time to figure so somethings out... just remember to figure in cost of upkeep, consumables, entry fees and getting to the races not to mention an extra bubble for crash damage. o and don't strain your budget, the unforeseeable will happen! better to race a 10K car then look at a 20K car and wish you were out there...

think it out, don't rush into anything and do not try to win your first race lol just aim to finish for the first few...

btw what race school did you go to?

o and attending an SCCA school can help you get to know people not to mention you can learn a new track...

that's my two cents... and change

o and read every post in first gear and every other you have time to you will learn alot that way too...

    okay i'm done i promise!!

Thanks for your thoughts.  I attended the Bertil Roos racing school.  I will start looking for my next local race and go check it out.  I think our starting budget will be kinda small until we get an idea of what to do.  I just want to drive for now.  I am really interested in having fun.  Maybe try to win someday.

    Thanks

    Jason,

You've probably considered it, but just in case...

Autocross can allow you to shake down your gear, and also to drive at ten tenths without excessive risk to life, limb, and equipment...  For pure fun while scratching that itch for speed and hot rubber, it's a great choice.  I know Bertil Roos is road racing, and I'm not trying to change your course at all, but remember Randy Pobst learned a lot of car control doing SCCA autocross before he hit the big time!

    Cheers,

    Charlie
