Is a fiero good autocross car?

I am thinking about getting into autocross and Ive found an 1984 2m4 4speed for 450 dollars  runs and drives but it needs a little work I guess alot of wires in the engine bay and also the parking bay speedometer and odomete. Would this be a good donor car for an v8 swap or 3800 supercharger swap? Is there a class for this kind of car?

Re: Is a fiero good autocross car?

I started running a Fiero last year and have had great success. That being said, the 84 is not the car you want. Do to it being made for a 4cyl only it does not work well for swaps see: http://www.thefierofactory.com/84caddy.php. If you did get Fiero for a engine swap, look for an 88 due to a much much better suspension. Any GM engine in the car will make it legal for SM2. If you want any help www.fiero.nl has plenty of info in the forums.

Alright thanks I will try to find one but in the mean time would me putting a little money in suspension parts into my 1993 cougar be good? I have been thinking about putting a supercoupe 3.8 s/c engine in it later.

Re: Is a fiero good autocross car?

just starting out?  bring what you have and get driving experience under your belt.  good tires are the best investment you can make and depending on size,  will chew up a big chunk of your $2k budget,  especially if you buy dedicated autocross tires and the wheels to mount them on for the autocross day.

sadly the base fiero is overweight and was hamstrung by an econobox suspension.  The later models with the ugly nose had a better suspension.  Still it would be a very fun car to learn with,  just not very competitive in its class.

Many regional clubs also allow riders.  You can learn lots fast by riding with experienced drivers.

    Enjoy!

Main thing is to get out there and have fun and meet some cool people.  Maybe catch a few rides with some of the local hot shoes... you would be surprised on how fast they can drive almost any car.

I think the ugly nose you are thinking of is that on all the GT models. The Fiero to get is the 1988 Fiero Formula, and it has a nice enough nose--pretty similar to the last C4 Corvettes. Also painting that black body molding the same color as the rest of the car would help.

    Why would that be?

The 88 Fiero finally had most "issues" sorted out. Just as GM ceased production!! The big thing was that the 88 front suspension was basically a Chevette front end which allowed full alignment capablility versus just toe adjustment.

I'm no Fiero expert, but the '84-'87 used the Chevette spindle. The '88 used something else, but I had always heard that the suspension was completely different and much better than the early cars.

A common rumor is that the 88 suspension was a Lotus design. But in reality it was designed Pontiac and resembled Lotus designs.

    Cougar

First, it would be cheaper to buy a Supercoupe than swap in an SC engine...if you have an NA V6 Cougar you'll also need to replace the 7.5 rearend with an 8.8 and get the bigger half shafts, too.  With that said, I do autocross an SC and  it's hopelessly outclassed outside the regional level.  At regional events I've actually set two FTDs in the car in the last four events, but at divisional/national events you'll be up against cars that are lighter, more powerful, have bigger tires and are set up better than your car.   It's tough to compete against all four of those disadvantages. Trust me on that.
