Re: Ladies and Gentlemen, Start Your (Electric) Engines

I just got back from GPS.

     First, I'd like to clear up some misconceptions;

Having a Pro or Champ membership does not gain you access to the Pro Karts.  You have to log 10 hours in the Competition Karts before you are qualified for the Pro Karts.

Having said that, it is still tons of fun.

One of the tracks is really intuitive, and with the Competition Karts in normal mode (there is a "turbo" mode) it was basically a pedal-to-the-medal-no-lift track.  The other track was more technical and required some skill to find the fast way.

Now, if you run two races with at least one lap under a certain time you qualify to run a "turbo" race.  All "turbo" mode means is that there is a higher top speed.

So both Rich and Myself ran fast enough laps to qualify for "turbo" mode.  The only real indication of the faster speed in "turbo" mode is at corner entry.

The only problem I see is with the track marshalls.  They are very eager to fly the meat-ball flag and not at all eager to fly the blue passing flag.  For instance, in one race I was clearly in the faster kart.  Rich had the better line, but I would just pull away from him out of the corners, but they flew the blue passing flag!  So I let him by, and promptly spend the rest of the race glued to his rear bumper as I had the faster kart.  I patiently waited, lap after lap, for them the show Rich the blue flag so I could get by, but the flag never flew.

So be warned, the marshalls are stingy with the "Hey let the faster driver pass you!" flag.

Regardless, I will definetly be there on a weekly basis.

What is a daily license?  What is this annual membership? If I was going to go maybe twice (including the 21st) what should I spend money on?  What about if I go more than that?  Thanks Robyn or Carl or whoever.

Re: Ladies and Gentlemen, Start Your (Electric) Engines

A daily license is just that; it gives you a license to drive for one day.  You still have pay for each race.  I think the license fees cover your training.  If my memory is right, the annual membership is essentially an annual license and it costs about 2x the daily license.  It is worth getting the annual if you plan to go more than a couple times, and don't want to sit through training.

Carl, was it busy?  Long waits?  Also you commented about the courses.  Which is which?  Blue/Red? I've haven't been by since it opened officially.  I'll be stopping by early next week.

Regarding Turbo mode; my understanding is that the comp carts have 3 settings.  Slow for young adults pre-drivers' license, Normal for the general public, and Fast/Turbo for experienced drivers.  Do they allow carts in setting 2 and 3 on the course at the same time?

Re: Ladies and Gentlemen, Start Your (Electric) Engines

James - Thanks for answering some of the questions. I will try to clarify some other things mentioned in earlier posts.

As you said, a day license allows you to race for one day, cost is $12.95
An annual license if your racing license for one year, cost is $24.95
After you have your license, you will go through race training. This qualifies you for "Competiton Speed."

To qualify in "Turbo" you must:

    1. Take race training
    2. Have two races at "Competition speed" in which you get at least 23 second lap times on the blue track, or 24 second lap times on the red track.  We are just looking at the "best" lap time for any race - if you meet it, you have achieved an element of qualifying.  Two score sheets with a "best lap" time that qualifies, and from that point on, you can race "turbo" with any other qualified turbo racers.

In the beginning, there will be 1-4 turbo races per hour, based on the crowd. All other races will be at Competion Speed (Speed #2 or 3 possible).  We will NOT combine karts on the track at different speeds. As the audience matures, the number of turbo races will be increased to meet the demand.

Important note:  99% of our racers, by demographics, will not be "qualified" or previously trained or experienced racers.  Since SAFETY is our number 1 concern, the track will be managed tightly...but still offers a great experience.

SCCA racers should "pool together" to get more "Liberally marshaled" races.  I am sure the SCCA members will get to know the marshals, staff, etc...and I believe once they realize you are experienced they will loosen up a bit.

To drive for the pro kart, a racer must minimally qualify and take (currently) 10 Turbo races, and have a "Pro-Score", and best lap time, which is still to be determined.  We want to get everyone started on the regular karts before we bump up to the pro karts, they are seriously fast.

It was fairly busy yesterday considering this is a "soft opening" with no advertisement whatsover. Next week you will see us all over the media including Fox2 & Ch. 4 morning shows, Show Me St Louis and on 101.1 the River and Fox promoting St. Louis Idol tryouts for American Idol which are taking place at GPS.
