Help us spend our money:
So lets say a buddy and I have, I don't know, $8k combined towards a CSP monster right now, and $6k or so this winter/next spring for upgrades. After that, we have about $5k per year as a complete racing budget for entry fees, gas, upgrades, keeping it in tires and running, etc. Right now it costs us about $2k each a year to run our 2 separate CS spyders. That $2k includes everything but a.) daily driver costs (comes out of the transportation budget), b.) hotel rooms (vacation budget), and c.) tools. I'm not sure how much we will save by sharing the car, but obviously we double our buying power on non-wear or rebuildable parts like springs, coil-overs, wheels, etc.
The car we pick must be mid-engined, at least somewhat competitive in class regionally, tons of fun to drive, and I have to be comfortable working on it. In other words, the question is which generation MR2 should we buy? My suspicion is the second gen is out because it splits the difference in purchase cost, but not ultimate performance.
I have gotten about as far as itemizing the mods we would do to each car, and adding up costs. It looks like many parts are cheaper for the mk1 than for the spyder, and of course the purchase price is going to be thousands lower. So how far does $13K in mods to an mk1 go compared to $5-6k in mods for the spyder? At about $1K a year in mods thereafter, I doubt we will ever max out the potential of either car (if we would, the spyder is the obvious choice).
thoughts? comments?
