    Tirerack Shaving from Nevada...

Just a quick FYI - Tirerack has added tire shaving to their Nevada site.

Pros: great for those on the West Coast b/c it cuts shipping costs/time.

Cons: Seems like they're taking a little while to figure this out…
-another NWR member had requested a set of XS's shaved to 6/32" and only got 8-9/32".
-I just received my 205/15 RE-11's, requested a 4/32" and got something a little over 5/32", in addition the shaving quality was sub-par (compared to my previous set from the Tire Rack) ...lots of small 1" gouges and a few small grooves.  I contemplated returning them, but I've got the packwood NT coming up and need to break this set in...I plan to put a few hundred street miles on them to hopefully flatten out the surface.

*I had been thoroughly impressed with my first set of RE-11's that had been done earlier this season (done in Tire Rack's East Coast location) - they looked flawless to me, especially when compared to other descent tire shaving that I've gotten before from other places.

The one good thing is that Tire Rack refunded a portion of the cost - but I plan to request future shavings to be done from their East coast location.

Here's a pic of one...the quality of the shaving isn't terrible compared to other places, just not on par w/ TireRack's other shave jobs.

Yeah, those aren't too bad.  I've seen a LOT worse, and from reputable places.  But I agree that Tire Rack South Bend does an awesome job, in general.  Right alongside Vilven and PTSC (Bridgestone service) as tied for the best.  I could name names on the crappy, guogey stuff, but I'll leave it out.

I also have had a pretty bad experience with a very poor shave job on my RE11s from the Nevada location. A few big and little gouges with cupping on three of the four tires.

I contacted TR about the situation, after my first race on the tires (didn't have time before), they blew me off.

dang...those are some pretty large gouges.  When I told TR that I had already mounted mine and didn't have time to wait for a new set b/c of upcoming events, they tried to not refund any $$...I kept pushing, and finally got a little back.

They won't blow off your CC company, if it's not done properly and they won't address it file a dispute Wink

Those big gouges are unacceptable, no business has the right to offer amateur service for a professional price or expect you to pay for their learning curve, those are total f' ups, the shaving in the 1st pic is fairly standard though

I tend to agree with you, but it's probably too late now and I should have pushed harder than I did at the time. Just know this is how TR treats you after your money is in their hands.

    Re: Tirerack Shaving from Nevada...

    Guys:

You're right - you shouldn't have to pay for Tire Rack's learning curve or accept something that we did wrong. As painful as it is for me to see what has slipped out of our facility, it underscores the skill required to achieve a good shave job. The Nevada warehouse has worked to get up and running on tire shaving so we can better serve the West Coast. Our primary shaver in Indiana has been doing that job for over 5 years. Practice does make perfect. We'll get the guys in Nevada up to our standard quality level.

    Rob:

Making things a little worse, I think we may have dropped the ball getting back to you after you first emailed us photos of the tires. Since the CS rep who was assisting you is out of the office celebrating the 4th holiday, I'll have another rep get in touch with you today to follow up on this.

    Thanks.

I just wanted to come on and thank the TR for coming through making things right.

We recently had a set of AD08s shaved out of Indiana, they were great. Josh, if that was you, thanks.

    Peter,

Good luck on the 205s.  I still stand by my choice for the 1.6L Miata of the 195 and running this weekend at the SFR Divisional didn't do anything to change my mind.  If you check the results you'll find I didn't win but it wasn't due to the tire choice but a technicality that I will not go into.

As far as TR shaving I've always gotten great service except for one 205 RE11 that was out of round that I ordered when they first came out.  I think they may have just been in a hurry to get all the orders filled as quickly as they could.   They were shaved in South Bend as TR wasn't offering shaving in Reno at the time.  But hats off to them for stepping up to the plate and making it right without me even having to send a pic of the bad tire.   I've been buying tires from them for close to thirty years and have only had this one incident.  My 195s were shaved in Reno and looked about the same as yours in the pic(although not as many dimple holes as you show).  They are perfectly fine and I have no problem with ordering any future shaving from the Reno location.  Sure saves on shipping cost and time.

P.S.  Due to a broken shift fork on my Protege 5 daily driver I won't be attending the Packwood NT.  All the money for it now has to go to a replacement transmission.  Maybe next year.

    Re: Tirerack Shaving from Nevada...

If you feel there is a problem it needs to be addressed immediately.  Once you've installed the tires you more or less accepted them as your own unless it's a quality/manufacturing problem that couldn't be foreseen.  It's extremely decent for any supplier to address the issue after they're installed, moreso after they've been used.  Tirerack has always been very responsive to their customers, that's why I was surprised to hear they reportedly blew the problem off.

I always enjoy myself when I run any SFR event.  Great courses.  Great competition, and Hospitality second to none.  That's why I've run at least one event every year since 1995.

You should come and run an event here in Fresno sometime.  We have the famous old fairgrounds sight back and actually will be running an event this Sunday.
We also use the small lot at Atwater which may be a shorter drive for you.  Just go to fresnoscca.com to get the schedule.
