Re: So...when are tire prices going to start coming down?

    Spotpkt:
Tire manufactures may have panicked and hedged when they saw oil pointing toward 200 dollars.  If they did then they may still be buying most of their oil in the $100-120 range even though we see prices in the $40's.  So at this point in time their manufacturing costs may be just as high as they were before.  Though shipping and energy costs to produce the tires may be much lower.  They may not lower prices at all.  IMHO the best we can hope for is that they are hedging now at a lower price and that prices will not go up at all or will decrease slightly...

I'm not sure they would have bought futures out on the speculative spike we saw this summer...but, yeah, they probably did lock down a portion of their forecasted need.

Anyhow, I'm calling for a 10% decrease in tire prices by next spring, on average...in other words, don't bogart that j, my friend Stick out tongue

seriously, I would never expect Hoosier to drop prices, first...if it happens, it will be BFG or Kumho that gets the ball rolling...but, I'm not holding my breath, just wishin'...

The only way prices will fall is if demand falls, and that happens for a period of time.  I doubt it will happen long enough or deep enough to have an impact.  Although----personally, I went through 4 sets of A6s and one set of rains last year.  I am looking at cutting my purchases to just 3 sets in 2009.  If everyone did that, prices would drop.  If Kumho dropped prices, I'd probably get a set of those for the local season.

Hoosier = American company with American workers = Demand much higher wages compared to foreign counterparts doing the same job overseas for a foreign brand

It's really no different than what has happened to manufacturing in this country as a whole. Workers (skilled and unskilled) have demanded so much money in salary and full benefits over the years that an All-American company would have its products priced out of competitiveness compared to foreign manufacturers and thus began "outsourcing".  Those that kept jobs here played Russian Roulette of not being able to sell their products to a consumer base that wanted everything at Wal-Mart pricing.

Before the oil crunch earlier this year forced Kumho to lose their position amongst autocrossers and road racers as the fast tire for those on a "budget" and thereby bringing their products pricing in line with the Purple Haze, I used to spell Hoosier like this... Hoo$ier.

I was able to do so for years because they were NEVER cheap when compared to their peers, but they were never significantly faster nor were they longer lasting at the very least. This comes as no surprise to me, nor to many of you I'm sure.

    Am I lying?

As for the property taxes, NJ and NY have to change their way of funding schools. Nevada is a good model from what I've read, but our respective problems also stem fro the fact that there are too many districts AND too much variance in district parity (between rich and poor).

School funding in states like NJ and NY cannot be done through property taxes any longer, but neither you nor I are in a position to make those changes; many people aren't actually... Sadly Chris, gone are the days where the truly average citizen (one who possesses no political power and the money necessary to fuel that power) can rise to the occasion and make a difference as was possible 200+ years ago.

Anyway... Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
