you are probably way ahead of me, but just in case - have you found the ISCCA yet?  Those folks seem to be like minded, and could surely share their experiences with you!

Try http://www.impalassforum.com/vBulletin/showthread.php?t=123685&highlight=autocross%2C+class%2C+SCCA which suggests that the progression (depending on modifications) looks like FS, ESP, SM...

Re: **new here** what class is my heavy sled in

13.10 "rotating and reciprocating parts may not be balanced", so the Stock class is out

15.10.R "rotating and reciprocating parts may be balanced but not lightened", and .S which permits port matching

I'd guess ESP, but other folks on this forum would know better.  I am unable to find an Impala line in the Chevrolet section of the ESP car list, nor is there a Not Otherwise Classified catch-all that I can spot.  Unless you intend to run Nationally with that car I'd expect the Region to exercise some judgement.  Mostly I'd say it'd just be fun to see it run, and to drive it.

That's a NC car if ever I saw one :-)

Run it in ESP locally but I think its a CP or SM car nationally.

If your "fully built" engine has either been lightened or balanced, you are in CP.  If your bore is over 0.020", but less than 0.060" (I'm guessing it's 0.040"?), you are in CP.  If you have changed from the 3.08 rear gear, you are in CP.  That is just making some quick assessments, and reading through here: http://www.scca.com/documents/Solo%20Rules/2008_Solo_Rules_2.pdf

Hope this helps!  (from a fellow SSer!)

I thought you could change rear end ratios and stay in SM, but Tad you are definatley above ESP specs.

P.S. Now we just need to get Ed into this thread and it will be like the Impala forum over here.

I thought so, too, but didn't see the provision in the SP section.  Maybe I just overlooked it.

Hey, CaSSino, are you going to be in St. Louis this year?

I told Tad months ago on the SS Forum (before he even headed over here) that it was a CP or SM car.    Evidently I'm not a credible source Wink

Rule 16.1.D says "Drivetrain and related components (induction, ignition, fuel systems, etc.) are unrestricted except for the following limitations."

Those limitations are that the engine must be from the same manufacturer. So that rule right there says he can be in SM. Now since the the displacement increased then the minimum weight increased. Although with that engine your minimum weight is going to be higher then highest minimum weight (No car is required to weigh more than 3100lbs).
