    Atlanta Tour Kudos and notes

I would like to extend thanks and congratulations on the Atlanta Region and Heyward Wagner for a job well done this weekend.  It was one of the best events I have run in a while.  Well organized, well executed and fun.  While I missed most of the Friday activities the welcome party/cookout was a real hit.  I got to unload the car, visit with friends, have dinner AND walk the course.  Tech and registration were both open late enough to accomodate those that arrived after 5 pm.   Both went smoothly and scales were available.

Heyward, I didn't get to tell you there but I loved the courses.  They were quite challenging, a good mix of elements, good range of speed, flowed well and were great fun.  I liked the middle section especially.  Wide is good and it was wide enough to allow for a choice of line, and line choice and car placement made a big difference in how fast you could get through there.  My only regret was I didn't get to run the "other" direction on the saturday slalom.  Running 4th heat, the decision was made for me by the competitors in the first three.  While the bumps where pretty tough they weren't bad enough to really upset the car and the elevation changes made things interesting and added to the challenge.

The weather was great if slightly warm and humid on Saturday.  But hey, its Atlanta on Memorial Day, it could have been worse.  I remember the last Atlanta Pro Solo held at AMS many years ago.  It was so hot the pavement was coming apart.

It was a good event all around.  If only I hadn't coned my best run on saturday Wink

Re: Atlanta Tour Cudos and notes

    Cudos----

    WoW !

That's that really scary that the dog from the Steven King novel he was out there in Atlanta ?  Should have known that something wasn't quite right with the way that big old St. Bernard jumped on that car with that lady in it.

As luck would have it we were able to get hold of Dr. Lloyd on the site.   Once I ran up to Greg (Dr. Lloyd), and explained the situation, he quickly got his tranquilizer gun (handy thing to have around) and shot Cudo in the neck, and put him down for the count.  Many lives were saved because of this.

PS---Oh yeah KUDOS to everyone in Atlanta for a great event.  Georgia is such a friendly place.  It seemed that all the cops in the whole state lined the sides of the highway and waved to us as we passed to say goodbye.

Re: Atlanta Tour Cudos and notes

Yes. I know its Cujo.  But now that Steve changed Cudos to Kudos it's starting to make me wonder.

Did anyone at the site know that a rather large shipment of Cudos (the snackfood), was diverted from a Walmart supercenter, to the otherside of the Speedway.

Come to think of it now, I do seem to remember an unusally large amount of crumbs in Heywards paddock space. Hmmm ?

I had a blast and would like to thanks the Atlanta crew and all the rest for putting it on. Both Georgia events this year have been great and have made it hard to resist for next year. The course was fun and fast but the surface was a little slick for those of us in 1st heat (my excuse for scaring the corner 2 workers, lol)  Love the competition that is forcing me to get better. See you guys at Peru!

I'll echo what others have said above.  Great event, great courses.  It was a long drive and I am definitely considering it for next year but the drive from/to Philly hits hard on the wallet.  The only thing I might suggest is renting a dumpster.  Our area generated more, um, glass trash than most Beer and we ended up leaving a couple of bags in the back of my truck to ferment in long term parking for the week between events.

There was actually a dumpster at both events.  The one from this weekend was nearly completely full of trash, mostly beer cans and bottles it seemed, and what appeared to be several hundred old cones.  I guess that's what our new ones are for.

Re: Atlanta Tour Kudos and notes

Gotta agree with Steve on all points.  Heyward and Co. took the very few criticisms from the DX and fixed 'em big time for the following week at the Tour.  Courses were stellar (well, maybe except for the "Howard cone" on Saturday's course), beer was real this time (IPA), and plentiful hot meat on bun sealed the deal.  I just wish I wasn't so under the weather to where I could've enjoyed all of it a bit more.

I hope Atlanta gets another double-header weekend for next year.  I've heard talk of some really cool ideas being bandied about.  Fingers-crossed.

This was my first Tour event and I was definitely impressed.  Great course, well-run event... great job by Heyward, Atlanta Region and the National staff.

My 1st Nat'l Tour as well and it was a blast! Definitely on the To-Do list for next year. My hat is off to the folks of the Atlanta Region for being such great hosts. Also very cool that many of the "experienced fast guys" were more than willing to share their knowledge and stories with rookies like myself.  It is people like that that make us noobies feel welcome and want to come back again.  Hope I can be a little bit less of a patsy next time!  Embarrassed

Does Ann know that Andy is getting all excited over HOT MEAT and a set of buns.

I say what the heck.  Ann and Andy have had to be married about as long as I have been alive.  Who among us has the right to deny him the right to a little experimentation.

Hell, even I, the great Lehman, can't deny that seeing Andy running around Atlanta at the Pro, without his shirt on, with his ironing board, hairless chest, and tiny little shorts........well you know.......be still my beating heart......

If my wife kicks me out of the house......who knows......with my looks, charm, and avant garde fashion sense....I would probably be a runaway smash hit for the other side..

PS---Mike, you know that's like waving a red flag in front of a bull.

Was a great event. Good to see all the Florida buddies show up and do well, especially Mike King. Dude, you were blazing fast out there. Great job.

Plus one for Dave's MC'ing. Greg was disappointed, because he was going to wear his tie dye again.

I like your Jeff Goldblum impersonation when you got that 23 or whatever Sunday. Getting out and saying something about going back in time and moving all your molecules to the left or something. Look out for flies....

Re: Atlanta Tour Kudos and notes

Ditto all the above. The Atlanta crew made the trip from Minnesota 100% worthwhile, even though the weather was actually better at home (hey...it has to happen sooner or later!).

I also LOVED the courses. Very challenging and rewarding. Even I have to admit the surface and design seemed friendly to an STX BMW, but it would have been fun to drive in any car.

Special thanks to Geoff Zimmer and Bryce Merideth for lending their cars to Katie and myself. First class citizens both...very grateful for their hospitality! And apologies to Bryce. I kept expecting him to lay down a Sunday run like he did Saturday, but I appreciate the unexpected hospitality of allowing the guest driver to win. Surprise

One of the best Tours I've attended EVAR! Gotta do it again next year.

You assumed I was talking about some other meat/buns (like at the cook out)  All I'm gonna say is, "What goes on inside the Hollis Hilton, stays inside the Hollis Hilton."

Re: Atlanta Tour Kudos and notes

First of all, thank you all for your kind words- any time you make Steve and Andy happy at the same time without feeling dirty... well that is saying something.

In the category of Credit were credit is due- there were a lot of people who put a great deal of effort into this event- it was truly a team effort.  As event chair Meredith did a fantastic job of putting it all together and along with Mitch I think the operations of the event itself were extremely smooth.

I am really glad that everyone enjoyed the course.  Steve Brueck and I spent several hours in the lot trying to find the most forgiving route around the bumps.  However at Doublecross I discovered that a key section of the lot was pretty beat up- the resulting changes contributed to the "howard" cone, 3 cone slalom and the high speed S.  I would like to offer a very sincere thank you to Mr. Hollis for providing valuable feedback on the course during the lay out process.

hope to see everyone back next year... that is, assuming we forget how much work these events are by the time National starts looking for a schedule :)

Heyward, it was nice meeting you and talking with you about course design and philosophy.  As someone who is new to course design and learning, it was very valuable information.  I personally enjoyed the course a ton!  The ATL Region gets a 10+ in my book for the event and everything it did.  If you do this again next year, I'll definetly be back...if not sooner.  Everyone was very personable and when I went up to get my medallion and the crew from the ATL region cheered loudly, that made the trip 100% worth it.

On another note, I don't know exactly who it was, but whoever the guy was who was packing the trailer and helped me find my personal cones that were picked up inadvertently out of the grid area, please express my gratitude to them for their assistance in helping me find them in the trailer under all those cones.

Now...for the shock of the day.  My suprise that I ended up 8th overall on PAX?  Wow.  Not that it means anything, but.....WOW!
