Re: PLEASE READ: WARNING TO AUTOCROSSERS!!!!!

Geico is truely the devil.  I had them before I started autocrossing and made one claim with them.  They weaseled us and gave such a low ball estimate on our totaled vehicle that I was sick.  Played run around with sending the check that I had to take off of work and go down to their main office to get the check.  I've had Allstate ever since and been pretty happy.  I've also heard great things about State Farm.

    cmoreweb:
Geico is one of the main sponsors on the show and the show is geared around amateur racers (including autocrossers) driving for a chance to go Pro.

I just find it to be a conflict of interest when they are sponsoring a show like this with amateur drivers when they will drop you from your car insurance for participating in just autocrossing.  -Chris

Geico buys ad time in bulk from any network, not just Speed. So the buy is for "X" amount of airings in an hour or day or whatever. So you can also think that the money their insured pays to them, in addition to buying radar/laser devices for PDs, also goes to the massive buys of ad time. Heaven forbid it should be used for actually lowering rates or benefiting their customers. The shareholders are probably happy (blood money).

    re: SETUP...

it's not just ad time, each car has a sponsor, and GEICO is one of those sponsors.

that fvcking lizard should be set on fire. They act like they are best thing going for the insurance consumer, when in reality they are rabid sodomites.

    Dear do gooder,

It has come to my attention that you are working hard at becoming another part of the nanny state machine. Good work! Without folks like you, I would have probably burned my crotch with hot coffee 100 times, inhaled enough second-hand smoke to fill a dirigible, not passed thousands of cars driven by sheep before the construction site necked down to one lane, had my computer infected by fifty three hoax viruses, been attacked by 12-15 alledged terrorists who were just innocent Hindu immigrants, been able to say "yes" to drugs, died in five or six house fires that my weak batteried smoke alarm could have saved me from, been prevented from hearing or telling 2632 sexually demeaning jokes in the workplace, been able to bring my cell phone w/camera into work for the last two years, eaten God know how much delicious food with high cholesterol, high saturated fat, high caffeine, high sugar, lots of scrumptious red dye no. 7, worn attractive clothes made by little poor children in Guatemala  and not been told to "have a nice day" 831,774 times.

I promise to mind my own damn business and not warn you about danger if you promise to do the same!

    Regards,

    Alan

    For the record:

I have progressive.  My agent has seen my websites, knows about my race cars, knows they aren't insured through him.  They have paid out on my STS2 CRX with "tirerack" and national stickers covering it, I had an accident on a local hiway with some old bag who didn't see my aggressively lowered car.

Re: PLEASE READ: WARNING TO AUTOCROSSERS!!!!!

    fahrvergnugen:

GIECO fell off of our radar a few years back when our son was attending Ohio State and had them.  He got hit by a hit-and-run vehicle and we tried to get it covered under the uninsured motorist coverage (works for other insurance companies).  Low and behold GIECO claimed that there was mistake when the policy was issued two years prior because the State of Ohio insurance laws "prohibited" the sale of uninsured motorist coverage in that state.  GIECO was going to be gracious and refund the extra money we had paid for this added coverage, but they were NOT going to cover the damage to the car!  I went ballistic!

I researched the Ohio statutes and it turns out that more recent Ohio law does not "require" insurance companies to offer uninsured motorist coverage, but it is NOT prohibited from offering.  When they called me back I laid into them.  The guy made some comment about do giving them "attitude" as they were again going to be gracious and cover the damage to the car, but no more uninsured coverage after that.

The better part of valor here was to take the money and run... which we did and then cancelled the bastards.   That little gecko is a slimmy jerk.  I wish somebody with good Photoshop and FinalCut skills would make a parody commercial of that little gecko getting run over by a car!

I absolutely bash GIECO every chance I get.  They can save your 15% in 15 minutes and cheat you out of thousands of dollars in a heartbeat!  I've been with State Farm for decades and had excellent service and no nasty surprise rate increases, even after I went through a period of having two separate unattentive women plow into my cars within 2 months of each other!

Are you talking about uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage, or uninsured motorist property damage coverage?  Because if you have collision on a car, there is no reason to have the uninsured motorist property damage coverage, the uninsured motorist is covered under your collision coverage.  If you didn't have collision on your son's car, that's a different story.  They can't deny coverage on something you've been paying a premium on.

Additionally, there is alot of misinformation on this thread.  An insurance company can't deny a claim on the basis that you had a radar detector, that's bad faith.  You can do all sorts of stupid stuff and still be covered.  DUIs, going 150 MPH and losing control, getting in a random street race, etc.  Intentional acts are obviously not covered, so don't go crashing into your ex-wife.  Also, the policy wording I've seen on every policy I've ever read excludes any sort of competition, and that includes autocross.  There is, however, a handful of companies that will cover losses that occur in an HPDE.

Alex Jones, if you are reading this thread still, PM me about the details of your friend's incident.  There aren't grounds for a claim to be denied like that.

Not a first party to the rumor mill in this case, but I seem to recall that it wasn't a case of denying a claim due to a radar detector, but rather to deciding not to write or to renew a policy in the first place.

Geico is a really creepy company. If you read the fine print (check the questionair). If you have a radar detector they will not insure you. If you have an accident and their investigator (adjustor) finds a radar detector they can and have completely denied the claim.

Re: PLEASE READ: WARNING TO AUTOCROSSERS!!!!!

Sean is actually an insurance claims agent, so he does have some background knowledge on how the system is supposed to work. Now, whether or not another company's claims adjustors lie to see if the customer falls for it I guess is another story....

    Josh,

Do you know where in the policy it says it will cover autocross.  My agent says no if there is timing involved.

Re: PLEASE READ: WARNING TO AUTOCROSSERS!!!!!

I recently stopped licensing my car for street use and therefore wanted to try to get modified coverage through my regular insurance company. When I told them what I was doing with the car they made me drop it's coverage under threat of cancelling the policies on my other cars.

I didn't like the thought of not being covered at all on the long tows, or those sometimes sketchy motels along the way. I found this place http://www.capcoverage.com/motorsports.html would cover my car while it is stored, transported, and while in the paddock. It covers the stated value of the car, trailer, and tools. I go pretty light, so I only got about $40K worth of coverage. The premium was what seems like a very reasonable $500/yr.

Here is what I pulled from a popular insurance company's policy for damage to your auto.  Most will read the same.

    EXCLUSIONS:

    ...

    3.    to any vehicle resulting from, or sustained during practice or preparation for:
    a.    any pre-arranged or organized racing, stunting, speed, or demolition contest
    or activity; or
    b.    any driving activity conducted on a permanent or temporary racetrack or
    racecourse;

I would read autocross as being one of those events mentioned in a.  Note that b would exclude HPDEs.  A small handful of companies don't have that language in B, making track days covered, as long as no official timing is involved.
