Lubbock would be about the same distance as Topeka from Seattle,   But Houston would add another day to the trip.   36 hours is a really long drive...

Re: 2009 Nationals and Pro Finale?

    Right on, brother!!

    randychase:

I would love to see Nationals at another site and answered the survey and wrote more than one letter expressing this. The bathrooms, tech building, scales are all nice.... but that is trumped by the main reason for being there, the autocrossing. The surface is too slippery, the sand sucks,  it is too slippery, the lots are too small (though the designs have been great at maxing them out); it is too slippery, the distance from grid is too far where we can't see the competition, and finally... it is too slippery.

I would rather run at a place like Forbes with grip and happily give up the nice stuff that HPT gives us.

Solo is (IMHO) all about the driving and the community and I feel we lost a bit on both of those fronts when we went to HPT.

I loved when we ran Pros before at Denver because it was concrete. I loved the Lubbock site when we ran there...miles and miles of concrete. I love running at Wendover and Atwater... because of grippy concrete.

    Just my 2 cents.

Only problem with Dallas is there is no suitable site.

From what I've heard about the Lubbock site, it sounds like a great possibility...any reasons why National wouldn't pursue it as an option?

There are political/logistical and possibly financial issues to be worked through for Lubbock, as I mentioned above.  Not that it cannot be done, but it will take more work than going in to a site owner and paying some money.  I personally believe that working with the local CoC and offering to bring several million dollars of business to town would make all of that easier, but someone has to make that sale, press that flesh, schmooze those folks, etc.  Hopefully, we have the right folks in place with the right smarts to do all of that.

Ray Irwin show us the door.  I wonder where the reporter go the idea that there are only 275 entrants at Nationals?

RGAFB is not going to happen.  I live 5 miles from there and ALL of the area that has been talked about is now big piles of dirt.  Those piles of dirt will turn into a VERY busy transportation hub.

Probably looked at the ProSolo numbers and didn't know that the Solo Nationals add at least another 1000 drivers and their families and $$$ to the mix.

Because he is right.  We have two options.  Lone Star Park in Grand Praire @ 10k a day.  And TMS.  And while TMS has the room, good luck getting one of the good lots from them.

If so, big bonfire at my place!  Karp can bring the entertainment. Stick out tongue

I'll fly a few "ringers" in from Topeka Wink

I honestly will miss Topeka and Heartland Park if we move from both in 2009.

Topeka has been great. Like others have said, it is not too big of a city, but not too small. The only place I have traveled to and felt more welcome than Topeka was Walnut Ridge AR in 2006. Topeka has a lot of hotels for such a small city. Lots of dining options as well. Minor traffic issues. As a city to host 1200+ racers, it is perfect.

I personally did not mind HPT at all. I have been to nationals four times, twice at Forbes and twice at HPT. I prefered HPT over Forbes. IMO there were very few negatives about HPT. Those few negatives were big ones though (sand, lack of course/grid size, viewing, rudeness of the track staff). The rest of my priority list all went to HPT though.

As for 2009+, I would like to see it stay somewhat close to Topeka. It is good central location. According to my straight-line "as the birds fly" mileage calculator, Kansas City is between 1253 and 1486 miles from the "corners of the country" (I used Boston, Miami, LA and Seattle). That is fairly even difference of 233 miles. Going to Dallas would be a min of 1115 and max of 1603. Thats more extreme at 488 miles difference. Denver is the worst at 848 min and 1763 max for a 915 miles.

Personally, I would not attend Nationals if it was someplace like Denver, Salt Lake, Phoenix, etc. That is simply too far for the bulk of the country and I doubt many NE or SE members would go that far. I give you Northwest people a lot of credit for your 2+ day tows to Nationals every year!

I wonder if there is a suitable site in St. Louis or Lincoln, Nebraska.  Neith would be terribly different from going to Topeka.  I also wonder if the National office will move...

There is nothing in St. Louis suitable for Nationals.  OUr current site doesn't even have good enough availability for a National Tour and would be about 1/3 the size needed for Nationals. :(

The National office has a 20 year lease in Topeka, with favorable renewal terms.  They are not moving.  After all, they were in Denver for 30 years and Nationals or the Runoffs were never there...

Re: 2009 Nationals and Pro Finale?

Having been shown the door by sweeeeet Ray Irwin I suspect he will endeavor to make the last HTP Nationals a CF event.  Just plan to park and grid in the gravel outside the tunnel Stick out tongueand we will have a Rally Cross!

I hope SCCA has a plan and it does not include Solo to suck hind teat.

Something about the Steve Johnson era and the promises to the Solo program seem to haunt us.  If SCCA is not in final negotiations for a 2009 site, it would seem that is not good for any of us or for the sponsors of Nationals.  I hope that I’m wrong and they have found an excellent replacement with a forthcoming announcement like the road racers got.

Sounds like SCCA really wants to keep Nationals close to the HPT offices, so maybe that's an option.

I'd just as soon get the heck out of Topeka...outside of the nice people there, the town is well past it's "sold by" date...it's a pretty tired place, including the talent at Baby Dolls Wink
