Kumho>Bridgestone?

I was walking through the SCCA office today, and what did I see? Two stacks of Kumho XS's: 6 tires in different sizes. The only question is whether there are more than those 6 Kumhos in the US, and can anyone (who doesn't have the initials KM) get them? :)
Interesting. According to the highest level folks at Tire Rack, they were not available on April 30 (nor a week later, nor are they now). No pricing, no tires.

The width on the 225 is probably going to be a big issue for the EF's. If they can't fit it I wonder what cars will end up making significant ground on the EF's. Neon, Impreza, newer civics in STS. Maybe the RX-7 or the MR2 in STS2...

the saturns might really benefit, too...any of those cars that just a *tad* too heavy to keep up w/ the EFs on equally-sized rubber.
and in STS2, i'm pretty sure there's room under the miata fenders for the 225s.

You know that the TireRack isn't the end-all, be-all when it comes to tires. They're definitely well informed, but just because -they- didn't get the tire yet doesn't mean it wasn't/isn't available. I know that Miata sized REO-1Rs could have been on my car at least two weeks before TR had them last year.

just an fyi for those that were asking where to buy....
I just got a set of 205/50/15 r1r's from : http://www.thetireshoppe.com/default.asp?ID=276&sa=y&pagedata=tires They are shaved as well. I haven't seen any other freshly shaven tires in real life but these came out really smooth.

You know that the TireRack isn't the end-all, be-all when it comes to tires. They're definitely well informed, but just because -they- didn't get the tire yet doesn't mean it wasn't/isn't available. I know that Miata sized REO-1Rs could have been on my car at least two weeks before TR had them last year.
The question is whether anyone could actually buy the tires on April 30th. Contract drivers don't count. Could Joe Average go down to the local tire store and order the tires?

Agreed. As Matt said, this has come up before and not just with Bridgestone last year. At this point, no one has come forth with a set of tires, period. Not just from TR. Furthermore, there is no pricing available (but part #"s do exist). --Andy

So, I've been driving on the Toyos for the entire season and last year I was on B-stones. I've gone through one set of 195/50/15 Toyos already this year and it seems you can squeeze maybe 80-90 runs out of a set shaved to 4/32nds. I'm now on the 205/50/15.
Anyway, this last weekend was the first "hot weather" event I've been in all year and it also happend to be the ATL Pro (doublecross). I was very pleased with the launch of the tires. Tim Smith was doing his practice runs on Bridgestones because all the ST guys were going to run them because of how they tolerate heat better then the Toyos. He wasn't pleased with the launch of the B-stone so it was easy for me to convince him to try his Toyos out druring the practice. Anyway, Tim and I were the only cars running the Toyos.
Durring the qualifying rounds we had to take back to back to back to back runs and the only run that felt good was the first run. After that the tire went off in a massive way. Talk about greasy. I was pretty dissapointed as it made the class competition very difficult and I think it put us a dissadvantage against the B-stone drivers. I was almost ready to give up on them.
The next day we had the opportunity to cool the tires in grid between elimination runs and simply spraying the tires worked extremely well. Each run after spraying felt good, grippy and consistent. Thank God I don't have to buy any more tires. Tim won the entire event on 195/50/15 Toyos.
Bottom line: Toyos and Bridgestones are both fast. Toyos overheat much more quickly than B-stones. SPRAY YOUR TOYOS. Toyos can generate more grip but at a cost of heat soak and feel. Either tire can win. Just drive.

glagola1: He wasn't pleased with the launch of the B-stone so it was easy for me to convince him to try his Toyos out druring the practice. Anyway, Tim and I were the only cars running the Toyos.
I ran the new 205/50-15 Toyo during practice starts and also during first round, 1st heat (i.e. two cold runs) on Saturday. Switched to the B-Stones for afternoon and all day Sunday.
In practice starts @ El Toro the Toyo was usually about .15 faster to 60 feet. I have to add about 1000 RPM to the revs for a solid launch. As Matt/Tim said, the B-Stone is much more difficult to get a solid launch, especially on asphalt, and especially in the second day of a Pro when the launch area is caked with rubber and polished. By Sunday afternoon, I was dropping another 50 RPM and really having to baby it off the line.
Oh yeah, the 205 Toyos are freakin' HUGE! Look like little steam rollers... And big congrats to Mark Osgood for the class win, and to Tim Smith for gettin' er done on Sunday. Big paycheck coming for Tim. --Andy

Are complete results up on SCCA's site or am I just blind? (which is possible, I felt like I was driving by Braile yesterday...)

Yeah sorta. If you click on Monday North, you get the Saturday class results. But there does not appear to be anything for Sunday morning elimination brackets, or the Super Challenge. Ladies and bonus are there, though.

When I click on North Monday I get the Bonus Challenge results, in Excel format... when I click on North Sunday I get Saturday's results... East Sunday is the Ladies challenge... South Sunday is the Bonus Challenge again, this time in the form of a PDF. How hard would it be to just label them as Saturday Results, Sunday (Final) Results, Super Challenge, Bonus Challenge???????

The one thing I did notice this weekend and have been noticing over the past 3-4 weeks is the trend back towards the Bridgestones. After all the hype surrounding the Toyos has now worn off and people are realizing that they just don't last nearly as long, don't work well in a broad spectrum of temperatures, and just don't give alot of feedback to the driver on course, the Bridgestones are again the clear front-runner. Yes, they can be just as quick in some instances, but at what cost? It was interesting to see some of the front runners in ST jump ship over the Toyos over the past few weeks (Hollis, Wagner, etc...) and then come right back to the RE-01Rs. It just comes down to building a better tire that can handle just about anything you can throw at it and still be fast consistently. And that's we do on a weekly basis and the Bridgestones handle it the best out of the bunch. -Mike King Team Bridgestone

Wow, you sure are sucking down the B-Stone Kool-aid there, Mike. I have not "jumped ship" and then "come back" at all. I have several weapons to choose from and use the best one for each situation. That's not exactly what you said about me above. You have a fine future in politics. In fact, you are starting to sound a bit like Scotty B and the Kumho banter...

Let me throw this out there. I posted this in another forum. BTW, these started as an average of 5/32nds. Don't ask about the "average".
these are pictures of my Toyos. I am not disappointed. So far, I have a
total of 148 runs on them. 112 in the total dry, 30 in damp/drying
conditions, 6 in the pouring rain. I think there are 75+ left. 24 more
will be taken at the Tour this weekend so I'll have a better idea then.
FWIW, I think they feel better right now than when I first got them.

B-Stone Kool-Aid
is that similar to Purplesaurus Rex? If so, I'm in!
Our oldest set of Bridgestones have over 200 runs on them and they are still close (maybe the same) to a freshly scrubbed set.
if they can make the sidewall "Falken 215" stiff, i will be regurgitating the company mantra as well
