    GChambers:

    That's impressive.

Looks like I have a ton of weight to shed. We were hopeful that we could get my car down to 2015 from 2058lbs (On the HPT scales at Nationals) with going from the "B" package to a base package. I guess the new goal should be under 2000lbs. My current seats should be close to 25lbs. I will need to weigh them to confirm before the season gets going.

If I could get the "fatman" down to the 2100 lbs range I'd be happy.  It scaled in at 2263 on the HPT scales, so this summer it might get a ltw battery.

New update.  This one is a summary of everything learned so far.  It presents the basic recipe to build an STS2 Miata for any level of competition and budget.  Enjoy!

I could have sweor my Mazda service manual said something about 1 full turn on each side will yield about 1/4" toe out.

Also, any chance of you prepping a 1.8L car for STS2 since stock they make 116 at the wheels? :)  I would think 125-130 should be do-able.

Your memory is faulty.  Stick out tongue

The manual specifically says "one turn (one side) equals 7mm (.28") toe change".  And we verified this on Bill Kim's alignment rack at Soulspeed.

As to a 1.8, I'd be happy to help *you* set one up.  But I'm not done with my current car just yet.

You left out the weight of each combination.

Thanks Andy.  I hacked off my flowmaster last week and installed a disc only supertrapp in order to save some weight.  So now I have a 2.25 inch diameter exhaust with a glass pack and supertrapp.  Weighs about 8 lbs and works great thanks again for the dyno results, it aided in how many discs to run this weekend at the shakedown before I head down to Dixie.

I was being lazy and did not have the info at hand.   Its there now.  No surprises there.

    Re: Andy's STS2 Miata Project

Yea, that's what I found when I dyno'ed the supertrapp on my '99.  Wide open made the most power, but was crazy loud.  I always wondered if it was because I only had a 2" Supertrapp though.  Possibly a 2.25" would have worked with plates.

Andy, did you try the end plate with the open hole in it?  I looked, but couldn't find your exact Supertrapp config (probably just missed it).  What diameter and length did you test?

Thanks for yet another update.  Which MaxQ system are you using, the entry level MQGPS?

It might be time to get serious this year.  :P

Entry level MQGPS, yes.  Bluetooth version.  Does what I need.  No need to overcomplicate things. I love the battery power and lack of wires.

New update and new link: Delrin Downsides and Cocked Cams

Did some maintenance on the Delrin suspension bushings, and found the classic Miata front-end clunk due to whacked adjuster cams.

    Hey Andy.

In looking at a few pics of your car, it looks like you and I run the same wheels.  (15x7 SSR's - mine on an ITA Miata 1.8 as you know)  Are you running spacers?  Can you?  It looks like you could grab a little more track without getting to the fender lip.  I use them and they are a REAL nice tuning tool.

Actually, I run either 15x7.5" or 16x7.5", depending on my mood.  But yes, I *could* easily run more track.  But I don't want to.  Here's why:

My philosophy on width in an autocross car is to keep the car as narrow as possible.  When you do the calculations, the benefits of extra track in terms of lowered weight transfer are not as important as the time benefits of driving a shorter course.  On transitional maneuvers, especially slaloms, those extra inches of track hurt you more than the handling benefit helps you.  Same with running tighter lines around 180's and such.

In road racing, its all different because you have real straights.  In that case, carrying speed through a turn (even if it means running a slightly longer path) pays dividends all the way down that long straight.  Especially on low-powered, good-handling cars like a Miata.  The extra handling can also be beneficial as a tactical advantage when running a sub-optimal line to get position on a competitor.

    Hope that makes sense,

    Re: Andy's STS2 Miata Project

Makes sense.  I guess I was thinking that maximizing the track within the external limits of the car (ie: what is going to hit the cones) would make for the best handling car.

    Re: Andy's STS2 Miata Project

Yeah, but you ALWAYS hit the car with the wheels unless you have some funny canards or splitter. Especially on a Miata with the bodywork sloping in at the bottom.
