I see you got the same overwhelming response I got when I posted this a few weeks ago: http://sccaforums.com/forums/permalink/271367/305064/ShowThread.aspx#305064

I suspect nobody really knows (or if someone has an inside contact they are sharing it or any info).  When everybody was waiting for the Bridgestones last year there seemed to be a lot more communication from Bridgestone and info that was shared on availability.

Here's what I've found.  As of early June, the rumor seemed to be late June.  Calling around to Toyo vendors either resulted in that same estimate or they would call Toyo and then report that none were available and Toyo didn't have an estimated availability date.

Around that same time frame, I tried cold calling a bunch of numbers from the Toyo website.  I eventually talked to someone named Rob that worked in Marketing (this is from calling the number listed on Toyo's website for sponsorship).  He told me he'd check and call me back.  When he called back he advised me they would be available August or September.

I just called http://www.racetire.net/racing/toyo/r1r.htm (who had previously advised that the rumor they were hearing was late June), this time they called Toyo and reported back that none were available and no estimated date.

I suspect the August/Sept time frame I got from the guy in marketing is probably the most accurate but I am curious to hear if anyone has any other info.

The 205/45R16's are now available. Anybody know the product number so I can order up a pair from my local warehouse guy?

    Say it aint so Toyo

I just got off the phone with Rob at Toyo Tires America and he confirmed to me the R1R 225/45R15 will be delayed further until October or November at the soonest.  I, like many have been eagerly awaiting the release of the Toyo R1R in the 225/45R15 size.  In my opinion it would have allowed the miatas to edge out the tire width limited CRX's in STS2 at Nationals this year, guess we'll have to do it on an even tire now.  Now I have to reassess my options...205 R1R vs.195 RE-01r vs. 195/55R15 StarSpec vs. 215 17" StarSpec, tough choices.

This would only be the case if the Toyo was actually the superior tire....

Maybe now that Tim Smith smoked the entire STS2 and STS field on inferior tires, we can get some more interest about this size...

     Cool

...so, can an 89 Civic fit a 225/45/15?

Man, I run with Tim all the time.  I have also run Toyos most of this season.  Tim is a great driver and I was not surprised at all by the times he pulled.  I've come to expect that from him.  The final word on the Toyos is that they are just as fast as the B-stones but have a sloppier feel, don't handle heat as well and wear quickly.  That's it.  I switched back to the Stones simply because I prefer the way the car feels on them.  I enjoy knowing where my slip angle is.  Tim stayed on the Toyos because he happened to have some.  Don't forget that STS2 ran first in the morning and STS ran in heat 4.  They should have been much faster than STS2... and were.

Oh, the 205 Toyo is not as grippy as the 195.  Nobody knows why... not even Toyo.  They're looking into it.  I'm not sure the 225 will be faster.

Now, let's feed the internet speculation machine!  It's hungry.

There appears to be a different compound on the 205/50-15.  It durometers about 10 points higher than either the 195/50-15 or the 205/45-16 (my rains).  Tim and I had a long conversation with the Toyo tech guy at nats.  He swears it is supposed to be the same but evidence points in a different direction.

I am sure they will look into this further. Too many people at the top of ST have had the same experience.  If the compound is not acting the same, it is not the same.  If and when I find more information about it, I will try and make it known.

Tim, so you were running 195 Toyos, not the 205'?

Yep, we were on the 195s. We had tried the 205s a few weeks earlier at the Cecil TnT and pretty determined they were not as good.

Just switching tires was a night and day difference, without even touching anything else.

Nice thing is that this will all be a moot point soon.....Stick out tongue

Btw, Nice job, Tim! Bummer how it happened, but at least everything worked out in time to walk across the stage a champion.

Is that supposed to mean the new Bridgestones are supposed to be that much better?  I don't care who has the better tire really, I just need something competitive in a 225/45/15 really....or anything bigger than a 195....

Re: Say it aint so Toyo

I ran my Full tread 195 Toyo's in the rain on a Fully preped STS 89 Civic and they were Amazing!! the car was Very fast. Then a week later I went to a Event in N.J. where you run morning and afternoon. I ran the Full tread Toyo's in the morning, then changed to my shaved Stones for the afternoon. The Toyo's had Way more grip then the Stones (2 seconds worth) so I switched back to the Toyo's  for my last 2 runs and gained the time back. It was 60-65 degrees out. I won Pax on my third run in the morning. Do you think the Toyo's were better because of the temps?
