Re: 2009 Nationals and Pro Finale?
Howdy,
DaveH:
This is the kind of place we need to be running Nationals on.
Too bad it's on the east coast...
...and they won't let us run there.
(Yes, there is a nearby Baby Dolls.)
Based on nothing but the google maps scale, that place is too small, isn't it?

Re: 2009 Nationals and Pro Finale?
Why don't we just move it to northern Minnesota in February? Surely there's a 2,000 acre lake somewhere we could scrape the snow off of. Grip would only be marginally more than HTP, but we'd have plenty of room to lay out some great courses. Just remember to bring your ice skates for working the course.

?? I think it's 2 to 2.5 times HPT. Here's HPT at the same scale. It was just an example though. There's got to be something similar somewhere in the middle of the country.

That is Marshall Army Airfield on Fort Riley. Fort Riley is the home of the 1st Infantry Division, known as the Big Red One. Marshall Army Airfield is used by the 1st ID's Combat Aviation Brigade. I doubt it would be available, but it might be more accessible than an Air Force Base.

Okay, don't sugar coat it for me. What do I know being from Connecticut.

So ya think any of the airmen (air people?) drive cars? Maybe the base commander has a shiny Z06 in the garage at home.

Re: 2009 Nationals and Pro Finale?
The base commander, Col. Roger A. Wilson Jr., seems to have an interest in local community relations. Unfortunately, the opening of the new facility in November may work against or for any future cooperation:
http://www.nwk.usace.army.mil/pa/HeartlandEngineer/Vol6No1.pdf
This is where Julow/SCCA taps Gov. Sebelius and Col. Wilson to have "lunch" and talk about the future.
There is a Public Affairs Officer, Christian Kubik listed here:
http://www.1stid.org/about/pressreleases/pao-news200706.pdf
He might be the first contact point.

Re: 2009 Nationals and Pro Finale?
It is possible to get occasional one day use of a military base depending on The function of the base and the base commander. It might even be possible to get two days. I think there is a two day event at the Marine Corps LCAC facility in Virginia Beach, but that is the only one I've heard of. Las Vegas Region gets onto Nellis AFB a couple times a year by making a donation to the Airman's Relief Fund. Mississippi Region uses Columbus AFB. In both cases, a form with the names of all persons wanting on base along with a description of all vehicles (tow, trailers, and competition) must be submitted a week or two in advance. The numbers of persons granted access is limited and they are restricted to on route on and off the base. Often they are given a time window to arrive and depart. There is no coming an going as one wishes.
Getting a hundred or so people in on a Sunday is one thing, but getting a couple thousand on a base for 10 days is closing in on impossible. Not only is security a concern, but using an airfield for 10 days would have a drastic effect on training and/or maintenance schedules.

Re: 2009 Nationals and Pro Finale?
Thanks for the background on access. In Connecticut, we cannot get near any of the United Technologies (Sikorsky, etc.) let alone the Naval bases. I thought I would try to see if it would jog someones thoughts (you know the guy who lives next door to Col. Wilson, etc.). Betcha he's got a Solstice or Corvette in the garage.

Agreed! I vote for El Toro in SoCal...great concrete surface, great weather, except no chance of rain :(

How long until the developers get El Toro, Scott?
Well, until then, it WOULD be cool...except for those folks with the 3000 mile tows...

Re: 2009 Nationals and Pro Finale?
Don't know Mike, and it would be a tow from the east, but well worth it!
Other ways to have fun.....Here's a video link from last year's annual Lone Pine Time Trials, out in the Owens Valley, just east of Mt. Whitney....2 1/2 mile course 4th or 5th gear...of course not SCCA sanctioned :) ...It's this weekend.

Re: 2009 Nationals and Pro Finale?
ditto. participation would be down, but you'd get people that might not otherwise come. you'd end up with more variety, and some different national champions, i'm sure. different class participation numbers. a lot of people won't make the trek every year, but that's not so bad. it would save us some $ not going /every/ year.
i'm not so sure it would make lot acquisition any easier.

Re: 2009 Nationals and Pro Finale? How about Arkansas?
We have a mayor with an old b52 base that has been asking for an event. It is a couple hours north of Memphis and a couple hours south of Saint Louis? Too far from Memphis, Saint Louis and us (Little Rock) to run local events and we had backed off of it due to New Port working out an hour from Little Rock. It is not a good site for the 3 regions around it because of travel but for a nationals event it would work. It is right off of I55 on the Ar and Mo state lines. Hotels and lodging could be an issue......

Blytheville would be a great place, except, as you say, there is no place to house 1200+ people.

I will call the mayor next week and ask for the chamber info on the town. That always have hotel and restraunt data it. I looked at google maps a while back and it has a huge amount of tarmac.
