scarrie:why not "just" fix forbes?
I recently read that a structure was being built on a portion of the pad we used to use for the course.

Lynn:
Where does it say this? I read 1200 entrants. My speed-reading must be failing me. The glaring mistake was his comment about, "Forbes Field's massive fields of asphalt." I've been there three times and it's almost all concrete, aside from the paddock. I'd have liked to autocross at HPT, but from the competitor's comments, I'm not missing anything special.

I sent the reporter a quick note thanking him for the article, told him how i'd like to stay in Topeka becuase we have always been treated well by the community and asked him to double check his numbers. I was surely not the only one...

As Jason says, they updated the article. It originally said 275.

Vanimaniac:
Has anyone ever autocrossed in Denver besides us locals? The altitude kills your power. I can see a lot of complaining if it ever moved here.
Yeah, that has crossed my mind. My buddy's FSP Renault LeCar would make something like 45 hp at 5500'. With the new 255-section 13" Hoosiers it might be a true "no-lift" run if we brought it to an event in Denver. Kinda like autocrossing a lawn-tractor....only slower in a strait line.

It would take millions of $. It really needs to be totally ripped up and replaced. If it was done in asphalt, we would probably have the sand all over again anyway.

It's not around any fancy cities, would have to utilize many small towns for hotels within a 20 to 30 mile range (maybe more would have to do more research, too lazy), no place for a banquet (bad food anyway) but what a great site this would be in the middle of the USA.

Re: 2009 Nationals and Pro Finale?
Wait a second, a local autocrosser, Kent E is now on the Blue Springs, MO city council. We are located just minutes east of KC. Maybe I should run for city council as well as another SCCA member and we can approve a very large concrete autocross/commuter parking lot just on the edge of town. :-) If it would bring millions to the community, it would make perfect sense IMO. It may be a couple years away since elections just took place, but, look for this development to happen within the next couple years. ;-)

The reply from Mike Hooper after I emailed him:
Matt, I appreciate the feedback, we have corrected it online and will run correction in print edition tomorrow. Michael
and then one more back and forth between us:
Matt, It was nice to hear from you. I was at the Solo Nationals in 2007, it was a good time; I will look you up this fall. Michael
-----Original Message----- From: Matt Murray Sent: Wednesday, May 14, 2008 2:46 PM To: Hooper, Michael Subject: Re: Solo Nationals attendance number, re: "Heartland Park steers race to the pits, Irwin not bringing back SCCA Solo Nationals"
Dear Mr. Hooper,
Thank you for the reply. If you are around in September, please come by and say hello. I have attended every National held in Topeka, and started attending Nationals in Salina since 1987.
I have also been one of the instigators or "Head Duck" to get us out of towners to buy ducks for the Sertoma Clubs Duck Race (I kept wanting to win a party at the Blind Tiger!) so that we could give back to the community that hosts our little soirée.
Matt Murray
Matt Murray I am perfectly capable of learning from my mistakes. I will surely learn a great deal today.

Re: 2009 Nationals and Pro Finale?
First, I don't mind Kansas or Topeka for that matter. My drive is reasonable as well as the local hospitality is relaxing. However, I think I echo many competitors desires. First, I want GRIP(whether it be asphalt or concrete, this rules out Texas Motor Speedway's bus lot) second, I want air so no Denver or stupid altitudes. Third, the event needs to scheduled for a warm date! Fourth, a site large enough that we do not have cars sliding up to our backs from the adjoining course while working. And last but not least, a paddock with a little space and no set hours!!
If this exists, there are 1100+ people willing to spend some of their hard earned money to be there but how about SCCA spending a little of OUR hard earned money this time!!!

Re: 2009 Nationals and Pro Finale?
I have spoken with my Russian contacts......
And have secured a firm committment for the Chernobyl site. The SuperTankers will leave from Norfolk, VA on September 1st. Plenty of room for everyone their tow vehicles and assorted other junk.
McGeorge has offered to let anyone needing to crash a nite, if getting there early, on the floor of the Toyota dealership.....but he asked me to ask everyone to please don't sleep in the Camrys on the showroom floor.
PS---just a little fly in the ointment. The Russian government kindly requests all participants, to happily participate in human radiation experiments.
PPS---I ask you.....is glowing in the dark for 3 months, too much to ask for a kick ass site !
Trying to get faster

Mark Jorgensen: Zauskycop:....this can't happen soon enough. I bet we will be treated VERY rudely this year by HPT... Not that they can be much worse. Time to play hide and seek again with the "permit-less" scooter haha...
HAHA ain't that the truth, bite me Ray!
I got a laugh from that. Thanks, Mark. d.hitchcock

Dan Marx car? I want to run our SP corolla against the Renault! Our last dyno showed 73whp/70wtq at 5300ft!

The North Course is now a blast zone for all the new tankers stationed there after the latest round of BRAC. Of course, if they could get rid of all the old, obsolete, no one knows how to fly or fix them, tankers (which the government won't allow), they wouldn't need that space. The South Course is now the home of some super-secret part of the National Guard, and when they are there, no one is allowed through the gate (except tower personnel, I imagine).

+1 for succinct requirements: grip, air, warmth, safety, flexibility, space...
would increasing the amount of OUR hard earned money that SCCA can spend be acceptable?
it has already been pointed out that entry fees are a relatively minor slice of the total expense for most participants. my draft budget for a Topeka trip is pushing 2k - i'd pony up a premium to the SCCA to make the destination outstanding... i'd bet most folks spend quite a bit more than that.
$550 gas, $700 lodging, $700 food and spirits - no allowance for a dedicated set of tires ($500) - assumes 4k round trip miles, 30mpg
distance accounts for a third of the cost, and entry fees hardly even show up!
if 1,100 folks invest an average of 2k we're at 2.2m immediately - again, site cost increases seem less dramatic in that context
am i wandering off the reservation here?
