    Help me pick a car!!

Hey everyone I'm new to the site so I might as well introduce myself now, I'm Mark and currently working and going to school and I hope to learn alot from all of you!

Now to my question,  I'm looking for a new car to fool around with in the 20 grand and under category.  But along with this being an Autox car I'd also like to be able to drive it to work or cruise around in it if I wanted to.  Just looking for some input on a couple cars that you think are fast and fun.  Thanks in advance all, cant wait to hear some ideas haha and get my arse back to Mid-Ohio its been to long!

Re: Help me pick a car!!

welcome, and i hope you get hooked and enjoy it

    a couple of things:

    1. try this thread for openers -- http://sccaforums.com/forums/thread/296985.aspx

    2. since autox is mostly driver, and very few folks start out fast, i wouldn't weigh the autox part of the new car decision too heavily.  there are a host of affordable new cars that will serve you well on the street and also provide a capable platform to learn the humbling art of solo II

    3. my personal bias is Mini - but that's just me (they are kinda popular in several classes - to put it mildly)

but mostly, good luck and have fun - i assume you've found your local region?

Re: Help me pick a car!!

new car under $20k to autox? your choices are to look to gs or hs. only classes i can think of that fit your requirements. plenty of fun little cars in those classes. hs seems to be a bit more open but gs seems to be the mini. yes, you will fit in a mini. i know that picking a car you like over a car that wins seems reasonable since you are just starting out but trust me, that feeling will be short lived if you start getting serious about it and you find out you're stuck with an also-ran that you have four more years to pay off so go with something that is a proven winner. now if you take away the new car part then everything opens up. i can think of capable cars in every stock class. my personal favorite would be a c5z06 but tires would be expensive. but since you said you like to drag race, nothing in stock comes close in power. also, not new means you could buy anything that can win in street prepared, street tire, even street mod classes and build your way up. my suggestion would be to look at results, find cars you like that are winners, and then go with that. no sense in wondering is it the car or is it my driving? if you're in a proven class winner and you aint winning, it's your driving! of course all this may be for not as it seems the scca is in the midst of a major class restructuring shuffle so todays class overdog may be tomorrows also-ran. great advice i gave you, ay!

how big?  I'm 6'3" 260 lb and I have to slide the seat forward to reach the pedals.  a helmet fits with the seat nice and upright, but barely.   If you don't fit in the mini, you might be out of luck given your previous constraints...
