    c-clip eliminators legal in SP?

    Howdy,

(I sent the below to the SEB, but figured I might get more detailed responses here...)

I have a '99 Camaro, running in ESP.

My question concerns c-clip eliminator legality...  Can I run c-clip eliminators on a live axle and be SP legal?

    15.10.W says:
    > Axle/halfshaft and driveshaft retention/location devices may be installed
    > for safety reasons to control the motion of attached shafts upon the
    > failure of a coupling or universal joint. They may serve no other purpose.

I'm not really sure if that means I can run c-clip eliminators or not. The ones I'm looking at are made by Strange, and you can see a thread about them (including a picture) here:
    http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/index.php?showtopic=7702&st=0

Summarizing, it would appear that to install them you're required to cut down the live axle tubes about 1.5" on either end, replace the brake caliper brackets, plus modify (or perhaps replace) the axle half shafts, and presumably remove the c-clip itself.

I'm not sure that this is all that much different from modifying the rear axle to use (for instance) 9" bearing retainers, for that matter.

This seems a little beyond what I'd have expected SP to allow, but I wasn't sure, outside of c-clip eliminators, what else 15.10.W would be referring to.

    Thanks!

    ?

I don't know much about the live axles at all, but if your part (I can't see the link since I am not a member of that forum) is meant or the sole purpose of the retaining the axle in the case of the failure and does nothing else to the car (no any other benefits to the car), then from the rule you cited above that should be legal.

I don't think C-clip eliminators are allowed in SP.  15.10W is refering to driveshaft hoops or similar external retaining devices to keep a broken u joint/cv joint/tripod from allowing the axle to swing around and cause colateral damage or pole vault the car on the axle.

AFAIK, drag racers run them so that if they snap an axle, the wheel stays attached to the axle housing, vs. exiting the car.

I think the only performance gain is if your c-clips/axles are pretty worn, the stock setup allows the axle to move back and forth a little bit, which can cause the piston to get knocked back in the caliper a little, resulting in a poor brake pedal on initial application.  The c-clip eliminators (and similarly using 9" outer axle snouts & hubs) fix the wheel/rotor in one place related to the axle, so that can't happen.  I.e. kinda the same thing as making sure the wheel stays attached to the axle housing, vs. the axle shaft itself.

    Mark,

Those axles are not legal no were does it say you can run hardened axle and those are strang axles.
