What do all of the regions do for trophies? 

How many trophies do you typically award at each event, and what do they cost the region?

 

Here is our situation, I'm looking for comments/ideas on ways to make it easier/less expensive.  We aren't stuck on the plaque idea, we have talked about t-shirts or something, but I think the price would be high based on small numbers and uniqueness of position/name.

Currently, we offer the trophy winners a choice of a trophy or a $5 chit (credit) toward a future event.  For our first event of the year we had 55 trophy winners and only gave out 15 trophies.  We have been looking for ways to cut costs on trophies, but still keep them personalized to the event (sponsors logos and event number).

In past years would have brass 'event' plates that would stick onto wood plaques which we purchased in bulk.  We would purchase plates with different places on them (ie. 1st, 2nd, 3rd), we would apply the plate to the plaque based on finishing position and give them to the participant.  The problem is that we would end up with lots of extra event plates after the event that were basically useless. 

So this year we decided that if people wanted trophies we will mark them down and order trophies AFTER then event, this would reduce surplus plates/etc and allow us to add the participants name/place on the trophy.  They will receive their trophy at the next event (this is a downfall, people like instant gratification).  Due to the small order size they are costing us a decent amount (we have less though), but maybe it's just the way it is.

So... what do you do?  How does it work for you?  How much does it cost...

ATL region doesn't give anything until the end of the year. Pro class has a cash prize, but that's it.

A 1 1/2" tall by the same width plaque with a brass plate containing the actual event information and finishing position will hang from these hooks.  They in turn have hooks.  Each event gets a small plaque hanging under that last one.  There's one at teh end of the season for season class winners that is sl;ightly larger and red brass to make it stand out.  Theese event hangers are cheaper and you order those only after results are done, so no waste.  The large plaque has all the club stuff, year, and series name.

That is a decent idea, are you including individual class and finishing position on the smaller event plaques?  We would definitely want to include the event sponsor on the event plaque.  Any idea what they are costing the region?

I have a couple like this.  Nice setup.

A similar approach is for the initial trophy to have more real estate on it than is used.  Then, for each succeeding
"trophy" you just give a plate that sticks on with the placing.  I've got some divisional series trophies like that. 

Some or our local groups only give out trophies in novice class and at year-end for all.

We've talked about this, however, we would need to have all of our sponsors for the year inline before the first event in order to get them on the trophy, or the plate is going to be fairly large... I'm really liking the plaque that Pat mentioned.

The other idea I had was to purchase a bunch of different items (shirts, hats, coffee cups, mugs, keychains, etc) in two standard colors/styles (class winner, trophy winner) and just buy enough for the entire year(s).  If the person wants a trophy they choose what they want from the 'inventory', once an item is gone it's gone.  This might get more people interested with different trophy options, we'd have to take a look at pricing though.

We use club branded glassware for wins, sponsor provided hats, T's, koosies or decals for lower placing finishes. Cost seems to be fairly low, though I've seen some of the same glassware used season after season. Special prizes may be awarded for some accomplishments like FTD, FTP, PAX class winner, most cones hit, etc.....

I love that idea.  Wish national events did that.  How many keychains, little clocks, license plates, big plaques, medals and whatnot do you need in a single season.  A choice of "swag" is a good one. 

FYI, my favorite Nats trophy is still the clock plaque from '01.  Use it everyday. Who needs hockey pucks, plates, pyramids, window panes, etc...

The NWR gives glasses.  We order enough for the whole year to get the cost down.  They have the Fordahl logo (sponsor), and our region emblem printed on them.  We have separate glasses printed with the Jim's Detail logo (novice sponsor) for our novice program.  We change the style each year (clear pint glasses, blue pint glasses, clear beer mugs).  I am not sure what the cost is but I don't think it is too bad.  It hasn't gotten old yet, no-one has turned down a glass.  We sell the extras at the year-end banquet and at the NT at about cost.

SCR only does year end awards, not per event ones.

Per event awards, in my opinion, always go to the same set of people who probably have plenty of this crap in the closet already.

The WDCR has magnetic cones for 1st, 2nd and 3rd.  They're 4-5 inches tall with the WDCR logo and either 1st, 2nd or 3rd.  Way less cumbersome than plaques, you can throw them on the car to intimidate your competition because they haven't won any. 

Orange cone on gas tank door:

Our club (Autocrossers, Inc.) has something similar but instead of an orange cone it's the outline of a Mustang.  Again, small, easy to store with all your other magnetics.

The only bad thing is if you have a car with limited/no metal body panels.

We (the Iowa Region) have only given out year end awards for the last few years.  And interest is dropping for year end trophies as well.  Everyone seems to have the trophy shelf full, or they don't have interest in starting one.

Maybe you guys don't get a lot of new members down there, but I think of it as a new member retention tool.  I remember getting my first trophy...still have it.  Meant a lot to me at the time.  Keep in mind you old dogs have full shelves, as do I, but the new folks still enjoy it I think.

The best regional event trophies that I have ever won were rock glasses and glass beer mugs with the regions logo and the finishing place etched onto them. Cheap to buy and very useful. Everyone was happy to win them.

CNY gives out large blank plexiglass plaques with your first trophy of each year.  For each event you enter you get a small metal sticker with the event info, and a corresponding metal sticker indicating your position (for trophy positions).  At the end of the year, class champions get a hat and a decal for their car.  Top 10 PAX get a nice personalized trophy with a model of their car (or the closest approximation they could find).
