Mazdaspeed Miata - Tire & Wheel Sizes

    Hello All.

New to boards, so I'll introduce myself. My name's Todd. (Hi Todd!) I've got 04 MSM and I'm in the hunt for a set of AutoX wheels and tires. Now I've got some solutions, but I'm curious what other MSM's are running.

My current major question, how wide of a tire are guys running (to the MSM peeps)?

    I'm currently thinking about running

    1.) 245/45/16 Hoosier A6's on a 16 x 8, (ENKEI RP-F1)

    3.) 255/50/16 SAME AS ABOVE

    2, ) 225/50/16 or 265/45/16 Kumho V710 on a 16 x 8 (ENKEI RP-F1)

     3.) 225/X/15 A6 or V710 on a 15 x 7/8 (949Racing 6UL)

I'm not sure if that's overkill, just right, completely obscene, etc. Most of the non-MSM guys are running 15 x 7s, but I'm not sure if that's a fair comparision. Anyone care to shed some light on this topic. I can and will run anything, I'm just trying to figure out what works.

    Thanks!

     Todd

I'd just copy the CSP guys. 275/35/15 Hoosiers on 15x10 wheels.

Re: Mazdaspeed Miata - Tire & Wheel Sizes

From your choices you are obviously playing in BSP or SM2.

If you don't want to mess with your fenders then the 15x8 6UL's with 225/50-15's are your best bet.  lots of miatas running that no problem.

or if you care less about your fenders then 275/35-15's FTW.

My vote would goes to the 16x8 enkies with the 245/45-16.  there is a lot of rubber there.  and it is a taller tire which I think would be well suited to the really short gearing of the MSM.  And would be even better if you are making a lot of power.  If you run >-2 degrees of camber and roll the fender lip this will probably fit okay.  But I would run that by Goodwin first before you take my word for it.

Re: Mazdaspeed Miata - Tire & Wheel Sizes

The Mazdaspeed Miata is limited by gearing.  I think it only does something like 48mph in 2nd.  So with that in mind, I'd run the same wheel/tire setup as Ron Bauer/Jim Daniels NC Miata setup for CSP.  I'm pretty sure they are on 18's, but I don't know what size.

Without actually checking the diameters, I'd think that the 275 Hoosiers would make the gearing worse.  You need something considerable larger in diameter than what comes on the car.  Something that will get second gear up to at least 52 mph or better yet 58 mph.  Obviously the negative is the added weight of this tire/wheel setup.  But I think it's the right direction to go.

Re: Mazdaspeed Miata - Tire & Wheel Sizes

I was going to go the 245 15 x 8 route but they are out of stock. A local guy sold a pair a 205/50/15 V710 for dirt cheap so I snagged those. A 205, I think, would be too stretched on a x8 rim so I snag a set of Enkei RP-F1 15 x 7. I'll run these while I get my feet wet with RComps, and then probably trade up to 245 Hoosiers on x8 next year. The 205 are smaller than what I was looking for, but money talks, or rather good discounts. I'm not sure my skill level would be able to extract the difference in the V710's and the A6's right now. I agree with the gearing, I basically had two idea. Go large and slow it down, or go small and speed it up. The car pulls good in 3rd, so I'll try running it in 3rd. I'm already banging off of 2nd ALL the time in an event anyway, so maybe this will cure that. If 3rd is bad on the new setup, I'm screwed. You might see a LIKE NEW for sale ad soon.

To be honest, I'd say you're probably wasting time and money on that wheel setup.  You won't really learn anything new, especially since you will have to relearn once you go to a bigger size.  I'd say do 275/35/15 combo as well.  And get a used to shifting between 2nd and 3rd alot.  If you could fit 285/3518's on it, I would.  But I don't think they will fit on an NB.

It's gotta be streetable, and I was under the impression 275 required some hackin on the fenders. I basically want a setup to where I can see the leaders, but I can't beat them. When I know, I'm good enough to be consistently fast, and close to the top, then I'll start hackin' fenders.

The 275/35/15s will require fender modifications if used correctly (proper ride height, camber, wheels, etc).

The 225/45/15s on 15x8 would give you most of that tire footprint and the same gearing without any headaches.  <-- recommending this for you

The Big n' Wide tires might end up causing some fitment issues.  The rear inner fender are tapered in a way that causes larger diameter tires to rub at a smaller backspace.  For reference, 245/40/17s on 17x7" wheels barely fit at stock ride height (serious rubbage).  Lowered but stiffer might fit better, but you'd be figuring that out on your own, possibly at great expense.  Gear ratios would be better though (probably end up shifting anyway).

Get all you stuff in order and come down to Ft. Worth for the SWDIV Divisional on 8/22.
