I have an 02 325i sedan with sport pack that weighs around 3100 pounds.  I use full tread 245/40/17 RE-01R's  on the stock 17x8 wheels and they are a fantastic tire although they can be vague on course but reward the driver with tremendous grip on both wet and dry courses.  The tire does tend to heat up but nothing a sprayer won't fix.  I have several events on them and they still look new.  The ride on the street is quite nice actually  but  they follow the ruts/grooves in the road so you have to drive with two hands.

I think any sticky 245 is going to do that, my Kumho MX's do as well.

btw, for an E46 M3 I'd think about 265's, should have plenty of room.

265s fit fine (just make sure you get at least the 1 degree or so of camber you can get from removing the screw and pushing the struts to the edge of the bolt holes). But wider wheels up front will move you out of AS. Many M3 drivers go with rear 18s up front with 265s all around. The offset makes the fronts a tighter fit than aftermarket wheels, btu they are pretty cheap (swap with a guy that wants all fronts for his non-M 3 series). The square setup makes for a much better balance.

I recently started using 265/35R18 Yoko Advan Neovas. I don't have a lot of tire experience but I can definitely say they are much better than the stock 255 Contis.

Either Dunlop or Bridgestone ought to be very good - I'd go for the better deal.
