    Re: STi vs. 135

They have been reportedly weighed in at 3200lbs, there is already one that bimmerworld tested at vir this weekend with 255 street tires on 9" wheels and also has jrz shocks and a slew of other goodies.  This car i think is the real deal and with 245/285, shocks and a bar i think will give everyone a run for its money.

If they are like the 3 series they won't be able to fit much more than a 245 in the rear which will seriously hamper a car with that much power and basically an open diff.  Though I could be wrong.

The fact that the 335i is heavier and in FS makes this ridiculous.  Regardless, with the one wheel peel that it should get, I'm not overly concerned yet. - AB

In the hands of someone who is good at throttle modulation (not me!), and on the right course, the car will be a seriously improvement.

It may not be apparent this year, but wait until we see where Nationals is in 2009.  If we get a good surface, it'll be a one car class.  Hmmm..

The real question is how much tire can fit under the fenders. Someone already mentioned 255 street tires can get under there. So if a wide 285/30/18 A6 could fit, that car could definitely be a class killer even on the slick HPT asphalt. If it can't fit anything larger than a 245 r-comp, then maybe the other cars in the class might have a chance (on asphalt).

I think DS needs a class killer.  IMO Right now DS and GS are to close in times and types of cars.  DS needs to slot in between GS and BS not just be a little faster/slower than GS.  Unless the 135 shows actual BS speed I think they made the right decision.

If I wanted to make sense, I'd say put all(most) of the RWD DS/ GS cars in DS as a kind of "luxo-semi-slower" BS.  The rest of the cars (ITR, Mazdaspeed3, WRX, etc) would go to GS so the Mini S guys don't get bored of each other (even though they're still faster according to PAX).  While we're at it, the G35 coupe could go to DS instead of one-tire-firing it up in FS (please?).

I am not sure what that buys you.  The current, up until today, RWD DS cars are generally pretty competitive right now with the FW/AWD DS card.  Splitting them up by drivetrain won't change much.  They are clearly not overdogs compared to the FWD/AWD cars.  The last RWD car to win DS was 2003.  Since then they have placed 2nd, 3rd, 10th and 4th.

We (Steve and I) had 275s in the rear and 245s up front (A6's) on the 135i. It was a VERY last minute thing. No rubbing issues at all.

I'm not nearly the autocrosser that Steve is (I'm an open track guy), but we both struggled with the car all day. We didn't have time to put shocks on the car, or even play with the alignment. Keeping the front end planted requires a lot of effort and finesse. It's definitely no R56, that's for sure. ; )

I'm not so sure the car is a class killer yet. I'd like a little more than 4 runs worth of seat time, and I think Steve would too, especially with shocks, alignment, and some more experimentiation with front tire sizes. I think the car has potential, but some adjustments to both the car and driving style are in order.

Thanks for that info Chris. Quick question, based on the clearance you had with 245's upfront, do you think there's enough room for 275's? Even though it's not ideal, I've personally seen 275's mounted on a 7.5" wheel.

    Re: 128/135 vs 328/335

The most puzzling part about this is:  The 128 and 135 are classed *together* in D/S, yet the 328 (D/S) and 335 (F/S) are in separate classes.  Someone *please* explain the logic behind that.Rollseyes

Agreed. To make this classing decision seem logical, the 335i needs to be moved to DS.
