We're replacing the original locked diff on our DSR with a Civic-based Quaife LSD (Thanks Chuck V!) and want to make sure we're legal for upcoming SCCA Divisional and National Tour events.
The GCR requirement for chain guards:
9.3.39. SCATTERSHIELDS/CHAIN GUARDS
The installation of scattershields or explosion-proof bell housings shall be required on all cars (except Showroom Stock, Spec Miata, Touring and Improved Touring) where the failure of the clutch or flywheel could create a hazard to the driver. Chain drive cars shall be fitted with a protective case/shield to retain the chain in case of failure.
Minimum material specifications are:
.125 inch SAE 4130 alloy steel
.250 inch mild steel plate
.250 inch aluminum alloy
NHRA or SFI approved flexible shields.
The SCCA Solo requirement:
A. The following shall be required in all Modified Category vehicles:
1. Scattershields/Chain Guard - The installation of scattershields
or explosion-proof bell housings shall be required on all cars
where the failure of the clutch, flywheel, or torque converter
could create a hazard to the driver or passengers. Chain drive
cars shall be fitted with a protective case/shield to retain the
chain in case of failure.
The following material requirements apply to scattershields/
explosion-proof bell housings:
0.125 inch SAE 4130 alloy steel
0.250 inch mild steel plate
0.250 inch aluminum alloy
NHRA or SFI approved flexible shields.
Almost the same except that the latter clarifies the material requirements specific to scattershields and bell housings. My assumption is that these specs don't apply to chain guards. Anyone knowing/feeling differently, please advise. Also, how much of the chain should be covered and do guards require “sides”? Descriptions of others' sport racer chain guards would be much appreciated.
Also, I didn't see any requirements for safety wiring the sprocket bolts. Is this required and/or commonly done? I'd rather not as we've used a split sprocket for easy change-out (10 LH-threaded bolts).
Thanks,
Mike Moulckers
