    New Season New Rides

Only five days left, I just thought I would ask how every bodies winter projects went?  Has anybody made any significant setup changes, car changes, car problems?

I redid the bushings on my civic and found a front engine mount that wasn't being supported by any material and two bad ball joints.  But everything got finished in time and the car should be good to go for next weekend :)

    Hmm... New rides?

Juuuust a little car change, we repainted the '90 from white to silver.  A few other things as well...

It'll be an interesting season to say the least with a lot of learning to be done.  It'll also be a very LOUD year.

It's going to an interesting season...

    Re: New Season New Rides

I was pretty ambitious with the upgrades this Winter (maybe a bit too ambitious, as the car is still in about 200 150 pieces. Surprise ).

No way am I making it to the April 20th event, but May 18th should be a go.

It has been a peaceful off season for the first time in 4 years for me, thank god.  It will be nice to not be building another car this year.  The car still hasn't come off the trailer from the last event of last year.

We need to get the new Bridgestone stickers on the car, and we need to mount some new tires... we still have about 3 weeks to do that though since we will be at the Long Beach Grand Prix this weekend.

And I'd like to rewire the trailer with the new LED lights.  =)

    Re: New Season New Rides

Anyone in ST planning on trying the new Dunlops or Toyos yet?  I had Big Bear put on a set of the StarSpecs on the RSX last week... you know, like right before it snowed, so blame me for that.  Anyway, they seem pretty solid overall.  The sidewalls aren't as stiff as the Azenis were, and the overall grip is difficult to discern without a direct comparison on a course.  Definitely better than the Hankooks and at least as sticky as the Falkens on the street if not slightly more so.  I was also pleasantly surprised by the steering response and noise levels -- I have yet to try the Bridgestones, but for the price the StarSpecs seem pretty nice thusfar.  The Toyo tread pattern looks kind of intimidating in person, but I hadn't seen anything to sway me toward them yet especially given how dubious they look for rain driving.

The MR2 just has new Kuhmos ready to go.  Hopefully that will resolve that whole "sucking" issue from the end of last year. :P

Can't wait to get out there and start racing -- way too anxious the past few weeks.

Erik B. is going to campaign his Ford Escort S/R in STS with the new Dunlops but I don't believe he has the Star Specs.  My thought was that I'll stay with whats known to work (Potenzas) and if something looks to be more dominant I'll switch when the Potenzas are used up.  Personally for me as a driver if a certain tire is supposed to be a couple tenths faster I wouldn't be able to tell.

    Re: New Season New Rides

A couple days ago I was thinking about getting ready for the season and I forgot I don't own a car anymore. So I am looking for a co-drive this year if anyone is interested. Doesn't have to be competitive I just want to have fun.

    Thanks,

Chris Duetsch and I will be back in the ol' Evo.  No major upgrades...going to mess around with setup this Spring.  Looking for a high performance STU legal trailer hitch.  :)  We are running the Sar Specs.  We also have a new shaved set of Yoks, so we'll get some good comparison data.  (Although the Dunlops will be started from full tread.)  Maybe have some data before Milwaukee, but we're waiting to get down there for the best test.

    Yep...they are teh 'old' Z1s.

Was having the new camber plates installed yesterday...One of our custom Koni front struts is boogered up--the threads on the top are all stripped.  I doubt we can get it fixed in time...but are trying.  Anyone have an open STS seat on Sunday (I'll gladly pay for entry+).  Could also use a 2nd seat for Craig Mariani--my co-owner/driver.

    Re: New Season New Rides

After waiting for winter to end so I could put my suspension on, it's been a struggle to get everything done in time.  Thanks long winter! So, let see - coilovers, front sway bar, end links (front and rear), rear diff. bushings, turbo back exhaust, mounting tires on new wheels, alignment/corner balance, installing trailer hitch and wiring, and getting a healthy tune - she's good to go!  We'll have to see how good she goes - time to autocross!

(Thought the years of staying up 'till 2:00 a.m. breaking bolts, etc. was over after the R.I.P.ed civic, but I guess not.)

    Re: New Season New Rides

We trashed a custom Koni...sent it off for a rush rebuild.

Found some OE ZX2 S/R spec struts (shortened and stiffer than 'regular' ZX2) Tokicos that came with the OE 300# spring...and got them on the car and aligned by 4.30 today.  No time to corner weight--but it'll all get redone again when the Koni comes back...

Big thanks to MKE Region GT1 Driver, Dan Parr of Black Tie Automotive in Muskego for his help in wrenching on our car.

    Re: New Season New Rides

I love owning my own set of scales haha...even though I had to buy a new set.   They don't make replacements for the load cell that went bad on my old ones.

I changed spring rates up front this year, trying to get more mid turn mechanical grip, while lowering the front swaybar rate.   Early results (learning curve, Newport pro) have been satisfying!   Looking forward to seeing everyone!!

...oh yeah, there is a new pit bike this year too..
