Opportunities to be a part of the Club Racing event at GIR 3/28-3/30

We have several opportunities for you to be a part of the Club Racing event at GIR the weekend of March 28-30.  If you haven't participated in Club Racing before but are interested in finding out more about it, consider coming out and helping with the event.  Some of the great opportunites are:

     *  Registration:  This is an inside job that provides heat or cooling (depending on the need).   We need people Friday evening (6-9), Saturday from 6 a.m.- noon, Sunday from 7 a.m. - noon.

     *  Course Marshall:  Setup the track Friday night, help keep the track clean during the races Saturday & Sunday.  Must be 18.

    *   Hospitality and Food:  Help with lunch, dinner and during the day making sure everyone is having a great time.

    *  Assistant Race Chair for the day:  Come out and help behind the scene.

    *  Sound:  Help record how loud the race cars are and get a great racing view for the day.

    *  Corner Workers and Timing & Scoring can always use help!

For more information, please contact Sheila Burkett at 314-249-6571 or saburkett@yahoo.com

    See you at the races!

Course Marshal is how I got my start with the club.  You'll be busy moving equipment around before and after the event, but during the races you have free reign to watch cars all day from anywhere on the track.  You'll carry a radio around and be available for any jobs that they need including assisting with crash debris/cleanup, sweeping up oil spills on track, flat tows, and delivering supplies to corner workers.  You'll get to know most of the race workers in this job and you always get to each lunch first and are the first one to the beer after racing :)  You also get to drive around the track several times.

No experience is needed.  A truck is needed, but the track used to loan us one (I imagine they still do).  I'd be happy to fill any prospective CM volunteers in on all the details.

Course Marshal sounds like an interesting position.  Tell me more.

This is the official 2008 GCR description of the Course Chief or Marshall responsibility:

"The Course Chief shall be responsible for final preparation and maintenance of the course and other related duties assigned to him or her by the Chief of Emergency Services in conjunction with the Chief Steward."

Basically this is getting the course setup Friday night, water to the corner stations as needed, course cleanup during the races if requested and putting everything away at the end of the races.  You would not be on your own, but everyone typically pitches in to make these things happen.  You would be on radio during the races and right now the plan is to use our truck.  During the races you can pick great spots to watch from in the truck until you are needed.  BTW:  did I mention we feed you lunch (free) on Saturday and Sunday AND there is a dinner Saturday night.  For those of age, there is always great AB products available for Saturday night.

     See you then!

Plus, when it's cold, hot, raining, etc. you can sit in the truck and wave at the guys standing out in it.

I can't really speak for STL region, but I used to work 'course' when I lived in Michigan.  It really was a great job.  I did a lot of flat-tows with my pick-up truck.  I also "rode the wrecker".  Anytime there was an emergency on the track (usually a wreck, broken car, or fire) I would hop in the jump seat on the back of the wrecker and go out on the track to help.  It was literally a hands-on job as you often have to push, pull, and lift cars that can't move under their own power anymore.  And then when all the cars and drivers are behaving well, you get to sit back and watch.

    Geoffrey,

If you'd like to get back into the road racing scene, here's your chance! The Emergency Services team has a couple of regulars who handle flat tows and assist the wrecker crews when necessary. We can always use another hand--especially one that's had experience!

The action starts at 8:00AM, but we usually get together around 7:20 to get organized.

    Hope you can join us!

    Paul-

I actually would like to get involved again, and I am certain that I will make it over to help out soon.  I really enjoyed it in the past.

The biggest difference now, is that my wife and I now have an infant daughter that just turned 1 year old a few weeks ago.  I just don't seem to have as much free time as I used to.

Anyway, if I did want to come over and work, who would be the person to check in with to get oriented? (or is that you?)

If you, or anyone else reading this, want to come out and play, it's easy. Just come out to Gateway, locate Registration (near the southern end of the garage building), and ask away. If Carol and crew can't answer a question, they know who can! (I work in race control, high atop the grandstand.)

Cars will be on course at 8:00, so come early.

(I can imagine how your time can be quickly accounted for by a one year old!)

    Cheers,
    Paul
