Holy Splitter Batman! - is it legal?
The 2008 SCCA rule book says that in SM/2
M. Front splitters are allowed and shall be installed parallel to the
ground (within +/-3 degrees fore to aft) and may extend a maximum
of 6 inches forward of the front bodywork/fascia as viewed
from above. Splitters may not extend rearward past the centerline
of the front wheels. No portion of the splitter may extend beyond
the widest part of the front bumper/fascia as viewed from
above.
So without getting into the merits of the design etc, I just want to
gather opinions as to whether or not it's legal before I make it out of
anything other than cardboard and start testing.

Re: Holy Splitter Batman! - is it legal?
No such thing as too much down force at 60-70 MPH top end speed.
Just remember to do a wing equally big out back.
I've been designing one like these in my head for awhile now. Is yours going back to the front axe?
Want to go faster, please send money.

Re: Holy Splitter Batman! - is it legal?
The rules say it can go to the centerline. I may stop at the front of the crossmember. And for the rear

Re: Holy Splitter Batman! - is it legal?
My splitter looks exactly like what you are templating, Chris. And in fact, APR should now have a suitable pattern on file ;-).
And I have a strangely similar wing as well (shorter pedestal, though, to comply with XP rules)....
Jesse, I don't understand the pin & wrap mounting you are describing. By 'wrap' are you referring to a lip with five screws attaching the splitter to the air dam?

The cotter pins hold the actual splitter up. The "wrap" we have is a separate piece of cotton belting material. It sits perpendicular to the splitter surface, and covers the area between the bodywork and the splitter. Hopefully that describes it, as I don't have any pictures handy. Of course, I'm awake before 5am because I'm going to an event this morning.... maybe I should bring my camera. :)

"SO... If I slice the cone in half, and the bottom stays in the box, no penalty right?"
we thought about this with an a-mod car and some tight piano string across the front wing. and just drive straight through a slolam :)
But i just looked in the rule book
7.9.1 "...If the pylon is upset or totally displaced outside the penalty limit, two seconds will be assessed..."
that makes it kinda gray. the rule says totally displaced. using this you could say the cone was not totally displaced.

no, but I am willing to bet that if cut in half, the pylon would be Upset. I agree the design is legal, just was a bit shocked at how big it actually was. I trimmed it back a bit as I want to put an air dam around the front and that will make it a bit wider. Prototype is cut out, but not attached yet. The good news is you can get two of them out of one 4x8 sheet of material, but not one out of a 4x4 sheet.

Re: Holy Splitter Batman! - is it legal?
Part of the downforce generated is the negative pressure on the underside of the splitter. You want to maximize that area, go all the way to the wheel ceneterline, and as wide in between the wheels as you can. Just 0.10 psi of negative pressure adds up to quite a bit as the number of square inches go up.

off topic -
I have only seen a cone get cut in half once and the lower portion stayed in the box. Sure the cone was badly damaged before the impact and should have been replaced before the event. Still a funny story thought :D

So I did get around to snapping a picture of the "wrap". EDIT: the attachment won't work...
