    Re: '08 National Tour

We were doing well till Brian took his clothes off in the hail storm...

The people in the paddock next to us had tents set up that were in danger of destroying their cars (50 mph winds and canopies don't mix). So we did the right thing and held them down till they got back, getting completely soaked to the bone.

Other than that, it's been fun so far.

Hail is evil.  I'd prefer a storm of locusts over hail.

Brian, this isn't your car is it?  The picture was on scca.com in an article about the start of the 2008 National Tour.  The car has the same Static X Motorsports decal that Brian had on his STi, and the inspection sticker on the windshield looks similar.  Yes, I have that much free time to compare window stickers.

Yep that's it. Joel Fehrman is driving the car tho. He destroyed BSP in my car last year in Dixie.

Judicious application of said torque is what is useful...  The course was a blast to drive: fun and fast.  National level competition is completely different from regional. I highly suggest that everyone somewhat serious about Solo go to at least one National Tour in their life to gauge themselves against some awesome drivers.

In other news, Shelby's are NOT FS cars!

    Dixie Tour wrapup

First of all, a big thanks to Brian for giving me the opportunity to co-drive. Besides being a fantastic autocross car, it adds a teamwork aspect to the sport, and gives a good measure of relative performance. Also a big thanks to Scott Main, who lent us his trailer for the trip. Speaking of which...

The first incident occurred about 20 yards into the trip. Sorry Scott - we'll fix it!

We made it to Columbus, Georgia late Thursday night (technically early Friday morning) and Frankenberry joined us a couple of hours later.

We had a touch of rain on Friday for the test-and-tune.

The weather Friday night was rough, and Super Stock was running in the second heat. We knew that we'd be facing wet conditions for at least part of our runs. I was the 7th SS car to run, and my time of 50.756 was the fastest so far... and I had been really slow. The times fell rapidly as the course dried out. By the time everybody had taken three runs, several people had gotten into the 45s, including Brian (45.592). He was a little over 0.4s out of first, while I was more than a second behind first place with a time of 46.207. If I remember correctly, nine of of the top 10 drivers on Saturday were standing on their third runs. The course was drying so quickly that there were huge increases in grip as the session progressed. Because of that, Saturday was essentially a one-run day for everybody.

By Saturday afternoon things had cleared up considerably. The Lotus was definitely the sexiest car in class.

...even if it's dwarfed by its surroundings.

Sunday was a beautiful day, with mild weather in the morning and getting pleasantly warm into the mid afternoon. We starting running at maybe 9:45 AM, when it was still fairly cool. The car felt good, and the course was fast. Unfortunately, we were a little under-geared and under-powered. Brian and I both had to shift to third going out, and were riding the limiter for a couple of seconds coming back. And the turnaround at the end was slow enough to get the car out of its powerband... although I didn't feel like I took that turn well in any of my runs. I was dirty on my first run, got a rerun on my second, was dirty on that rerun, and managed a conservative 45.894 on the third. Brian had to stand on his first run, a 45.632, because he coned his other two. We each moved up a spot: Brian finishing in 5th, and me finishing 8th.

This $200 Saturn met its demise and was turned into a makeshift stunt object.

But the Lotus came out unscathed, and was safely loaded back on the trailer for the trip home.

I'll go through some more pictures sometime soon and post them as I get time.

    Re: Dixie Tour wrapup

Overall, the weekend itself turned out to be quite an interesting excursion to say the least...All in all, it was a blast and I am looking forward to the ProSolo coming up in April in Arkansas...

As far as the Dixie Tour results go, things didn't turn out quite as I had hoped they would as I finished 9th in FS out of 11 drivers and Bell finished 10th, though he was just excited that he wasn't DFL in class...My times on Saturday were just awful and I put myself into a huge hole going into sunday, and while my runs improved a little bit on sunday, there wasn't near enough improvement to dig myself out of the hole that I put myself in on saturday...

I did come to the conclusion, though, that I would have definitely been able to win the class and beat the current FS national champion IF:

     (1) My kumho's weren't old and warn

    (2) My suspension was properly setup for the event

    (3) I wasn't so hard on equipment

    (4) I had a better tire warmer for the event

    (5) there wasn't competition with more experience than me

    (6) the course was straight w/o any turns

    (7) the asphalt composition was at a lower acidic level so that it would react better with my kumho's than their hoosiers

    and

    (8) the particular solar flares we had over the weekend were kumho reactive solar flares and not those for hoosiers

    .

    .

    .

    -OR-

Maybe I just shouldn't have sucked and I might have driven better and had a chance against top-notch competition...

dude. those shelby's would have owned you even worse if the course was straight. I mean they had a cold air intake and all.

    Re: Dixie Tour wrapup

Hey, it had to have been the solar flares, because you definitely had the best tire warmer ever. I mean I was only 2 seconds off you. That's like hitting a cone!

Maybe I shouldn't have soaked the two wheels you had in my apartment in magic "make crap" fluid.

I don't need a reason to hate on Saturns...they just deserve it. Super Angry
