Maybe I'm being sensitive since I just invested in my second ZX2 S/R after driving other vehicles the last couple of years, but looking in the rules, I find that while the Ford Escort GT and Focus are in FSP, the ZX2 is in DSP.

Is this an oversight?

The EGT and ZX2 share the same chassis, while the ZX2 and Focus share (basically) the same engine.

Now if it were a VW, you could have a Scirocco with a GTI trans and a Turbo Diesel,

Aluminum Bumpers and no back seat.

All Del Sol's are listed on the same line in DSP, so you can use the Del Sol VTEC driveline (B16A3), which ups the ante quite a bit. So it's not really an even comparison.

The ZX2 shares its drivetrain with the non-SVT Focus, so the only deciding factor (in my opinion) could be suspension. But there is no inherent advantage in the ZX2 suspension over the Focus that would justify a different class.

Write a letter - seb@scca.com.  The SPAC's next conference call is the 17th, and we'll be discussing stuff like this (porky FWD barges in FSP, that is;).

Without research and 100% unofficial, it (the ZX2) is an oversight.  

Or the similar variants winding up in F were an oversight.

 

One was an oversight.  I think it was Jinx' fault.  Most things are.

I emailed the SEB as well.  I agree--the ZX2 is an FSP car all day long...especially when you consider that the Focus gets the 2.3 in FSP.  The Muellers car puts almost 170hp down; its heavier than a ZX2 but I would bet that it can beat anything in the class in a straight line...and that would include a ZX2 as well.

 Looks like I am picking up an S/R as well...it'll see STS duty for now...but FSP could be in the cards if the SEB agrees that it belongs there.

Thanks, Eric. Your logic is very similar to mine.

I figure the 2.0 Zetec (in SP trim) is good for around 160bhp at best. That should put it still at a slight disadvantage in power-to-weight ratio when compared to the GTi's, but the car itself seems to be more in the spirit of FSP than of DSP.

Good luck on picking-up the S/R. This is the second one I've owned: the first one was the car that I started autocrossing in. I still remember laughing at the sticker price of the S/R package ($1,595) and realizing how many aftermarket parts I was getting for the money. These cars were an interesting attempt by Ford to get into the tuner market. It's too bad they never marketed it.

Add 25hp, a flywheel, an LSD, and who knows......

UPDATE:  It's in the driveway--we'll finish what Des started as an STS project for now...and hope that the change occurs for FSP for an additional option.

Will and David, I may be wanting to pick your brains a bit on getting this car setup...being here in MKE, we'll know right quick how a full-on ZX2 will look in STS.  As is, it's on custom Koni coilovers (told its 500/450), has a 22mm adjustable rear bar, a front upper strut bar, a chip, a UDP...and that's about it that I can see.  Want to do poly bushings, lower tie-bars, rear strut bar, Kirkey seats/harnesses, tiny battery etc. Then we have to decide on wheels and tires...found some 16x7.5 at 16.X# and some 15x7.5 at 12.X #, both with offsets in the mid-30s, which should suit the car well.

Looks nice! My first one was red, and the "new" one is black.

IIRC, a 99 ZX2 S/R won STS the first year it was a supplemental class. I always felt an S/R could at least trophy at Nationals, but since the Hondas are so much more developed, it's definitely an uphill battle.

I like the powerband so much more with a longtube header, that it would be difficult to go back to cats and STS :-)

I agree.....I blame Jinx for the cold weather in 06 and the rain in 07. Luckily I was only in FSP for one of those :)  LOL

 

I think it would be great in DSP.....the more cars in there to mix it up and not kill everything the better.

 

SO when is someone gonna build that Mini Cooper? :)  Stock its fast....add an LSD and the should be worth a bit of time. 2.5-3.5 camper up front.......then some big tires. :)

Good to see that it has been recommended by the SPAC.

With fuel and "living" costs seeming to go up every year, I think SP might see a resurgence, as it (to some extent, at least) puts a cap on your spending with its limited number of authorized modifications.

Looks like I can start to prep the S/R with FSP in mind. I know the guys that are currently in FSP are great, and it will be nice to get some new blood in there.

^just curious....but if you are going FSP, what are you going to do about your open diff?  i know there are a few options, but most of them just aren't tried and true.  the phantom grip isn't a true LSD, the MazdaSpeed Protege has a weak bull gear shear problem (at least the older ones do), and Quaife backed out on making the 30 units they were going to do.  i'm only curious because i'd like to go the route of FSP, but feel the car really won't be competative without the LSD.  if i can find out what more people are going to do, maybe i can start getting the ball rolling on moving out of STS.

I have not researched this, Tim.  I know there are BG Proteges out there in FSP, and BJ cars as well--in fact one trophied last year.  To be honest, I dont even know what transaxle series the ZX2 has...though I would assume it to be the same as the Proteges.  Can you shed any light on this?

I suspect that the MSP is the unit being used most often.  That is a 200+ ft/lb motor...we'll be far below that, and as such I suspect that the MSP LSD would suffice.
