Brian, I vaguely remember a rule about 'measurable tread depth at no less than two points on the tire which are 180 degrees apart around the circumference, and which are within the center one-half of the tread surface that normally contacts the ground.'

Still legal on that?

Will have to see how long they go before cording.  They still feel like they have a little bit of rubber on them.
 

Wow, I would be pissed if my Stones looked like that after 100 runs. I'm really hoping this 225/45/15 isn't that much faster. I don't want to have to deal with them.

But they felt so good.  The increased grip over the bstones is crazy good.  :)  I am going to get some 225s as soon as they are available and try them out.

I also wonder if the 16s coming out will be good, with the shorter sidewall, as the 195/15s tires kinda suck in sharp transitions compared to the bstones.

For the record, I am not an ST* autocrosser.

This thread seems to have the most info on the R1R on the net so I am posting here.

I have a 94 Miata that will shortly be pushing 180whp+ and a set of 15x9 6UL's coming for predominantly street use, some autox and some lapping.

 Basically my street tire choices are only 225/45/15 for the 9 inch wheels.

So either the Hankook RS2 or the R1R.

Will the R1R (full tread depth) really chunk after a few autox runs? Can I expect at least 10k miles out of them? I know some have gotten that kind of life out of NT-01's and RA-1's.

Just seeing the wear here posted is kind of scaring me.

I don't know of anyone that has run them full-tread.  Those of use running them shaved are seeing odd wear even at 3 or 4/32nds.  A lot of it depends on the grippiness of the surface and the ambient temps.  This pic shows what a 3/32nd R1R looks like after only four runs on a really grippy asphalt surface in 95 degree weather on a well-balanced car. It's more of a severe graining than a true chunking.

 

Just seeing the wear here posted is kind of scaring me.

Yes, in the context in which it was originally written.  Which I'll restate below since you were "cherry picking" a sound bite.

Counterpoint: 

The difference is that the best r-compounds are not at all streetable.  They have no discernable tread at all.  In fact, they are labeled "Not for Highway Use".  Flies completely in the face of ST's basic "street legal" tenets.

The Toyo, OTOH, is very streetable, especially at full tread depth.

Well, isn't everything "Very streetable" when comparing them to an A6/v710?  

Either way, looks like I will be going with the RS2, I can't afford that kind of wear on the R1R, might as well go with a NT-01 as I am not limited by ST* rules.

 Edit: Unless it will be shown in the next month or so, that this type of extremely fast wear can be shown to be Autox related only on the R1R's. But even then, looks like hard street/track driving would cause the same wear on unshaven tires.

I'm fairly certain that it is.  I've seen the same kind of wear on junky street tires (think rental car) when autocrossed hard.  Like say, oh, when Evo instructors come into town and need something to pre-run the course in for a safety check.  Of course, that's what CDW is for!

quite the read through the last 6 pages to glean out the info.  Sounds like for all the arguing there is no clear over/under on anything.  I've been holding out to learn more on the Toyo's but given the price and the wear potential I think I may just run the Bridgestone's for this year and see how things shake out for next year... fun fun... I'm not running competitive STS like you guys (just street indexed HS like we have in Milwaukee) so going from Azenis to the Bridgestones will meet the needs for a year... keep the info coming and glad to see all the info and thoughts.

as of Friday the word through Town Fair Tire from the Toyo help line was - no availability date as yet....

so i'm going to find out how the Z1 Star Spec handles - i'm out of time

I think the poster was trying to make the point that it had been awhile since any new news had come out (valid point).

my question of dunlop vs bridgestone is for a 195/55/15 and a 195/50/15 so pretty similar.

You are talking about slot car tires right? Spongies were the big thing until the RTV (Silicone) based molded ones came out. The chunks didn't really hurt them all that much if it wasn't enough to make the car jump around.

 I thought 13.3.F didn't apply to ST, meaning that a manufacturer could release a new tire in one size, and it would be valid, as long as it was released before April 30th and not on the exclusion list.  Or this could allow you to use an OE-specific tire on a non-OE car that is only available in one size, as long as available before April 30th.

DING! A WINNER!! Yep, 1/24 slot cars. Still have my old Chaparell 2E, and when I moved to TX from CA, I had Jim Hall autograph it. Spongees with that horrible menthol goop you had to put on them, yech. But yes, the "Sil Slick" came after that, and the ones I had, if you got even one tiny slice or nick on it, it would just come apart on you. In someways, this R1R almost reminds me of them.

Just an FYI - I went and bought the new Dunflop Direzza Z1 * Spec tire, With less than 100 miles on them, not even scrubbed in, I went to a track day at MSR on Friday. They performed brilliantly!!!!! No squeeling, no loss of traction, no turning greasy as they got hot, and except for the fresh rubber being scruffed off - NO excessive tire wear at all. WOW! And out on the street they are quiet, and when it rained real hard, no loss of traction or hydroplaning. They gripped very good in the rain too. Way better than the RE01R tires I just had, and right on par with my memory of the Neova I had on my STi.
