Re: Toyo>Bridgestone?

Thanks for the response Andy. I've definitely decided to get them shaved. It seems that 4/32 is the target depth, but would 6/32 be that bad, hopefully get a little more wear out of them? Last question, I promise. Thanks!

I'm not sure you get any more fast tread life from 6/32 than you do form 4/32, honestly.

    4/32 is fine.

I shaved mt first set to 3/32nds and put over 200 runs on them before they started to go off just a little due to heat cycling. Still have plenty of tread. I've only ever corded one set and I did it on purpose just to see how far they'd go. It really took some doing to get the tread to go away. Like massive abuse.

Chambers has had the same experience. Miatas are a little friendlier on tires than FWD cars, though.

Mine went off somewhat at between 180 and 200 runs on the Civic. Wears the tires a little more, 4/32 is a good #.

Anybody want to buy some lightly used 195/50-15 R1Rs?

They are grippy but I'm not a big fan of how they feel. They are obviously not a silver bullet.

    My experience is this:

The Toyos feel like Dirt Stockers (bias ply, soft compound, soft carcass). They require large slip angles and a deliver on a "toss" driving style. If you are fromthe "finesse" camp like me (and Mike and Matt) you won't like them. But they so stick, especially in low-grip/cold/wet conditions. Might be a good HPT tire.

When I get home later I will post a picture of a Toyo with the tread literally peeling off. That was from a couple of runs on a 30-second course featuring both transitions and big sweepers (the latter did it) with my Civic.

Expect also to totally change your setup. These tires will make your car push a TON.

I did a half-assed last-minute test last week and plan to do a more comprehensive test soon. Especially if I can lay my hands on the new big size.

    Hi Andy,

Thanks for the info. Not exactly what I was hoping to hear.

How do you think the R1R's compare to the Azenis RT-615's? I am looking for a 275/40R17 for my '01 M Roadster. The R1R and RT-615's are the only ones that come in that size that I have found.

Do you think R1R's or RT-615's in 235/45R17 and 275/40R17 would be better than Direzza Z1's or RE-01's (Neova's are too $$) in 225/45R17 and 255/40R17? Would the additional width of the R1R's or RT-615's offset the increase in performance of the Z1's or RE-01's.

I currently have 235/45R17 and 275/40R17 Kumho MX's on the car. I like the handling balance as it is, but would like to increase the grip all around by going to a stickier tire without resorting to an R-Comp (must be 140+ treadwear for my class).

    Thanks.

Sorry, but my current autocross experience is with small, light cars and the current tires. What works on those cars does not always carry over to heavier cars on bigger tires. My own daily-driver '01M Roadster wears Hankook Z212's that I won as contingency, but it doesn't see competition use.

My guess is that the waters will still be muddy on the "best new tire" issue at least through the summer. And then we get to do it all over again next year...

I've just asked my local distributor to inquire, and should have an update later today. Will advise. I am going through Discount Tire in this case. 225/45-15 R1R.

I have CRS (cain't remember sh*t) and must apologize to Town Fair Tire (a NE Area Toyo Distributor) for my confusion.

Town Fair tire will have a set of 225/45-15 R1Rs in their warehouse for me on April 1st. Should be on the car that week.

    Section Width: 8.86"

    Diameter: 22.97"

    Revs/Mile: 905

    Tread depth (unshaved) 8/32"

    Mfg. Part Number #236970

    Cheers.

More Toyo news: Apparently the 225/45/17 and a new size, 195/55-15 are now available. So new stuff coming in dribs and drabs.

Rebate via coupon sent via snailmail to SCCA and NASA members.

Who said the 225/45-15 is available? "Arriving April 1" isn't "available" in my book. 225/45-17 is available, though.

    Re: Toyo>Bridgestone?

yep - "available" means I'm driving on them

what I did learn yesterday though is:

    1. Town Fair found the Item# on their retail system, so Toyo has entered the new size

    2. the Item# was accompanied by the revs/mile, diameter, and section data for the tire

    3. a call from Town Fair to the Toyo "Help Desk" produced availability data, and a hard ship date from Toyo to Town Fair warehouse

    So, getting close...

A quick search of the toyo #236970 shows that this is actually the part number for the 225/45-15 toyo RA1 tire not the new R1R, might want to reconfirm that with Town Fair Tire.

this page has the 236970 part number:

Thanks again for catching that misunderstanding.

Having just spent an hour chatting with the TF folks, and through them with Toyo, here is the correction. My sincere apologies for posting bad information here.

    R1R 225/45-15 Part Number is #170140

The item is in manufacturing at this time, however the Toyo systems do NOT yet have price or firm availability. The Toyo rep that spoke with Dan at Town Fair tire guessed that the delay could be as little as 10 days, or as much as a month.

I will update periodically, and make darn sure there are no further misunderstandings.

Indeed, hope them, or at least the 205/50-15 will be available soon.

My 195s are getting low in tread, with 106 runs on them:

Will have to see how long they go before cording. They still feel like they have a little bit of rubber on them.
