    F125 general questions.......

For my senior design project I am designing an electric go kart. I figured why not build to directly compare to an existing class.

I was trying to find what kind of HP a normal 125cc engine puts out. I have found some of those $4000, 35 HP engines, but do they meet the class rules? or are they "road race" engines.....

Moto: Engines must be mass-produced, single cylinder, motocross motorcycle engines up to 125cc displacement and of the current year’s production or older. No prototype, preproduction, “works type motors,” or road race engines are allowed. Engines may be liquid or air-cooled. Induction may be piston port or case reed type only. OE parts can be interchanged from any year model of the same brand name and similar model of motor (i.e., CR to CR, YZ to YZ, etc.), provided that these parts are normally commercially available over the counter in the USA to all competitors.

What is the typical and even best per rules engine power and cost? What is the "class standard"?

35 hp would be a typical stock Honda, the best case theoretical modified motor would be in the neighborhood of 50 hp.

Probably in the range of $3000-$6000 from stock to modified depending on where you go.  There is a used modified Honda that advertises 46+ hp on e-kartingnews for about $4500 right now.  You can check with Swedetech racing engines to see what they charge for a new modified Honda engine.
