    Richard, I sent you a PM, but you never replied yet. I now have the Z1* Spec tires, and was wondering what type of pressures are best for them. High 30's or low 40's?.

    Sorry Rocky and thanks.

    I think on your car would be around 42 f, 33r, depending on front rollover. Go mid to high 40s in back if you need more rear rotation.

    Some initial unscientific thoughts on the tires....

    • Stiffer sidewall/carcass than the RE01R's as measured by the "sit on an umounted tire" test Smile 
    • Thumbnail test returned positive results.
    • Tires are stamped with a build date of 0408OVER. Nice to see something from the same year as we are competing Wink
    • Living in the same city as a tirerack warehouse has some benefits after all. Tires came into the warehouse Tuesday night, and out to us on Wed amYes 

     We're going to back to back test them against RE01R's this weekend.  Should be interesting......

    Well, took the R32 to Motorsports Ranch (in Cresson, TX - one of those neat "country club" tracks) today for some track time. The R still needs some tweaking with the KW V3's, still a bit too much lean. But the Dunlops, only a week old and not scrubed in at all yet, well, they were TOTALLY AMAZING!!!!! Only squeeled a few times, but not once did they loose grip!!! The car was like it was on rails - and as I said, not even scrubbed in yet, so that was fresh rubber meeting the ground. At the end of the day, with about four 20 minute lap sessions (2 of them I let the instructor drive, once on his own balls out), there was hardly any noticeable wear on the tires! Sure, they were scuffed up real nice, and gummy to the touch, but not worn hard at all. And when the instructor got out of the car after he was driving it, he was ready to buy a set right then and there. He was that impressed - and he has been racing for quite a few years, both here and in Europe (mainly Porsche).

    Funny thing too, when the parts guy at the on site shop called their tire rack rep about these tires - they kept on mentioning RICHARD JUNG as their new poster boy for Dunlop LOL!

     Interesting pressure recommendation -  with the stiffer sidewalls than the RE01R's I would have expected a slighly lower pressure.

     I ran a full tread set of star spec Z1's this weekend, but did not get much meaningful data as the tires "grained" a lot over the first few runs, shedding at least 1mm of tread very quickly. They cleaned up nicely after about 6 runs, but would seem to require a slightly different setup to the RE01R's.  On each run they did pick up a little time, and be the end were were no slower than the RE01R's we ran in the morning session.  I'm hoping that next event they work better, as the tires were sticker fresh on their first run due to not having time to scrub them in on the street. 

    Regarding tire pressure I found they worked reasonably well in the mid-upper 30's, but ran at least 15 degrees hotter than a shaved RE01R, peaking out at about 145F.  I'm assuming the higher temps are due to tread squirm at full depth.

    I did recommend higher than optimal pressures for Rocky's stock R32, with what I assume has minimal neg camber and roll control, plus narrow wheels. I recommended those pressures for a stock class '08 STi, and they ended up going higher. Have you upgraded your suspension for STX? I would recommend lower pressures for the Z1s than for a RE01r, but also the Bridgestones don't seem to be very pressure sensitive. 

    So from your initial testing, a full tread Star Spec ran around the same times as a shaved RE01 on your R32. Sounds good, you may find more time spraying the tires with water after 2 runs.

    Thanks for the response.

     My R32 is close to fully prepped for STX.  Tire use was decent, definitely no signs of excessive roll.   I'll try a broader range of pressures at the next test Beer

     I have an 05 STi using 17x9 wheels,  coil-overs,   Sway bars, etc.

    with the autoX alignment camber set at -3.8/-1.9... slight toe out in the rear (.5mm/side

    my RE01-R's are about shot.. so I have dunlops on the way..

     do any of the guru's have any pressure reccomendations?  or thoughts on my current alignment??

    I think you tend to get a varying response with tire pressures.

    But here's my .02

    02 WRX Coilovers 456lb fr 627lb rr      -3.5 fr     -0.5rr 1/8" of toe-out

    Hankook rs2 I ran 32fr 38rr cold

    Re01 I ran 29fr 38rr cold

    My dunlops should be here Tuesday, I imagine I'll go lower in the front if the sidewalls are stiff enough. I'll report back after some testing.

    Your alignment looks good, I don't think the STi crowd has the same issue with rotation.

    Richard, it is no longer stock, it is setup as far as I currently want to for STX. For suspension right now, I have KW V3 coilovers, Newspeed RSB and billet end links, and went to new wheels, ROTA Formula in 18X8 ET48.

    I took it on a track Friday (MSR), and used 40psi front and 48psi rear. The car felt neutral, stuck like glue, and no squeeling from the tires, even though brand new and less than 100 miles on them. At the end of the day, the fresh rubber was scrubbed away, but there was no excess wear at all! The tires held up quite well, better than expected. And without chaning pressures once, the rears were above the triangle mark, and the fronts wore to the tip, maybe a very slight touch past. But then NEVER rolled onto the sidewall at all. Very impressed with them.

    I did have some rubbing issues on the first run though (two of us in the car), so had to have the onsite shop raise the rear up a bit. After that, I started to at last get some oversteer. Not a lot, and not in all corners, but just about perfect.

     

    So Paul, where did you race this past weekend? There wasn't one around my area that I knew of.
