ProDarwin:How much does Tire Rack charge to shave?
I just received my 195/50x15 Stones from Tire Rack. They charged $15 each for shaving. It is the first shaved tires I've gotten and I was surprised to see the rather course texture of the the shaving on some parts of the tire. They look quite wide and I can't wait to recieve my 7.5" Slipstreams and get them on the car.

Tirerack's shaving is smooth compared to other places. :) Also the RE01Rs run narrow (or true to size) vs the wider Dunlops or Neovas

Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1
Guess I'll be giving the Tire Rack a call tomorrow to find out why it cost me $25 per tire to have them shaved. Just received them less than a week ago.

In the past I've had them say that they charge more for 'Street Tires' 'cause there's more rubber to remove. It used to $15/'race' tire like VictorRacers, but we paid $25/tire several years ago for shaving MXs.

It is $15 to shave race tires and $25 to shave street tires.

Guess I'll just be happy for typsu32 getting a great deal and keep my trap shut then.

Isn't racing great? "Yes, hello, tirerack? I would like to pay extra for the tires so that I can get them with only half of the tread."

Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1
Here's a paste of the email I got from Steve at TireRack as to why it costs $25 for the Neovas I ordered vs. $15 for Rs. Makes sense to me.
Good Morning Ken,
The Yokohama is technically a street tire and there is
more labor involved is shaving a street tire versus the competition tire you
mentioned below.
Hope this answers your question.

Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1
Actually I didn't get them shaved. When I was looking for their prices, I saw 15.00, so thats what I assumed it would be since I don't really see why it would be more difficult to shave the tires. Anyway, for the measurements and comparisons. The Z1's are much stiffer than the kumho mx's. The entire carcass just feels stiff in comparison. The compound also feels much softer according to the unbelieveable accurate thumbnail test. And as far as the widths, I was honestly disappointed. The actual tread of the tire is about 8 1/4 inches, but the actual contact patch only seems to be about 7 inches. Again, this is unmounted, so hopefully it will widen the contact patch when they are mounted next week.

How do the Z1's compare to the kumho's diameter-wise? I'm assuming the kumho's are 205/50-15's?
Thanks

Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1
In hopes of the good reviews from the STX and STU guys, along with TR testings, I'm crossing my fingers the Z1 will be comparable to the RE01r. Mines are mounted on 15x7 rpf1, and they've got the stretched look, along with the taller look :P............. Just riding them on the streets for the DIY heat cycle last night, and they ride smoother than my old 205 Azenis, as that was obvious due to having more cushion. Didn't push them, but I did have the sense of smoothness on my mind with them, as the Azenis weren't that. I'll try to post pics of them, as some may have not seen the 195/55 z1 yet............

Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1
the Z1's are about a half inch taller. It should help me some by keeping it off the red line since there are some pretty decent size courses in my region. Overall, I can't believe how much softer these feel. I can't wait to get em mounted and see how they run

Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1
I am sooooo thinking about these Z1's for my R32. As it seems the Toyo's are out of the question for now. And Pete Looney seems to like the Z1's on his 08 STI, then they should be ok with my R.
But just have to wonder about the new Kunho coming soon. The tread looks good on them too, but just not sure how good their sidewall will be. I already got burned by the MX when Toby Larson told me he thought they were great. NOT! I tried them on my stock 04 STi, and the sidewalls were soft as butter, and they got greasy real fast. But I did get a message back from them - coming in April (most likely to meet the deadline for this year), and are rated UTQG = 180 AA / A

Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1
So how does one get the Tirerack to shave tires? Do you have to place a phone order? I haven't seen the option when ordering tires online, at least not on the street tires.

The sidewalls are buttery, but I've never had mine get greasy. In fact one of the best things about them was in th middle of summer when it was 90-100 degrees out, all the Falken guys were having a hell of a time keeping their tires cool, while my MXs seemed to gain grip. The new Kumho is interesting, but I've given up waiting on tires. I'm going to start the season on Z1s, and maybe switch later if its necessary.
