    Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1

I wonder if the compound is similar to the Falken RT-615, since they are both made by Sumitomo.

The tire is supposedly big in Japan:

They wouldn't be legal for this year, due to not making the deadline, but the are legal for next season so far.

    Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1

They make a 225/45/16!!  If that were to come to the US I would be doing some good testing vs the 235/40/17 I currently run...

Shorter tire for better gearing and lower the car's CG a bit, while hopefully sacrificing very little in the tread department while still maintaining a stiff sidewall?  Could be good :)

Here a pic comparing the new Direzza Z1, RE-01R, Neova, and 615.  245/40-17 size.

    Some initial observations:

    - The Z1 and the Neova have a 9.5" tread width, the RE-01R is approximately 9.0" wide if shaved.

    - The Z1 weighs 26.4 lb.

    - Using the super accurate thumbnail durometer, the RE-01R felt the softest.

    - The unmounted carcass of the Z1 felt at least as stiff, if not more so than an unmounted Neova, tested by sitting on the tires.

How heavy are the other tires? (just because often heavy = stiff sidewalls)

I couldn't compare as the other tires were mounted, and the neova was well worn.

The Z1s do ride very firmly, opposite of the Bridgestones. At first I thought I forgot to soften my shocks. Also air pressures were only 32 - 34 psi.

    Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1

I see a set of the Z1s in my future after i wear out the Stones. Unless someone wants to buy some nice 245/40-17 RE-01Rs that have been bagged for the last 2 months in my 75 degree spare bedroom lol

    Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1

I saw several sets of Z1s being tested at an autocross on Oct 1st. They were given to some BMWCCA racers for O'Fest. At full tread they chunked (so shave them, of course) but they seemed pretty quick. When/if we get a chance to drive and/or test a set we will post it. From the times these cars were running they don't seem "uber" like tires but they don't seem slow, either. Another option.

    Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1

I've only had a day or two of street driving on the Z1s. Fun to slide around with very little roll-over. They don't understeer as much as the RE-01Rs. Not as mushy as a some of the others.

Still probably have some mold release on them, and haven't had a chance to test once they're up to temp. Hope to test begining of next month.
First impressions are that the compound probably has less ultimate grip than the top two tires, Neova and RE-01R, but the Z1s could be better than the rest due to the tire construction.
