The Z1 is not legal for ST yet, right?

Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1
I wonder if the compound is similar to the Falken RT-615, since they are both made by Sumitomo. The tire is supposedly big in Japan: http://www.direzza.jp/z1/z1.html
They wouldn't be legal for this year, due to not making the deadline, but the are legal for next season so far.

Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1
They make a 225/45/16!! If that were to come to the US I would be doing some good testing vs the 235/40/17 I currently run... Shorter tire for better gearing and lower the car's CG a bit, while hopefully sacrificing very little in the tread department while still maintaining a stiff sidewall? Could be good :) Ryan

Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1
Here a pic comparing the new Direzza Z1, RE-01R, Neova, and 615. 245/40-17 size.
Some initial
observations: - The Z1 and
the Neova have a 9.5" tread width, the RE-01R is approximately 9.0"
wide if shaved. - The Z1
weighs 26.4 lb. - Using the
super accurate thumbnail durometer, the RE-01R felt the softest. - The
unmounted carcass of the Z1 felt at least as stiff, if not more so than an
unmounted Neova, tested by sitting on the tires.

How heavy are the other tires? (just because often heavy = stiff sidewalls)

Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1
I couldn't compare as the other tires were mounted, and the neova was well worn.
The Z1s do ride very firmly, opposite of the Bridgestones. At first I thought I forgot to soften my shocks. Also air pressures were only 32 - 34 psi.

Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1
I saw several sets of Z1s being tested at an autocross on Oct 1st. They were given to some BMWCCA racers for O'Fest. At full tread they chunked (so shave them, of course) but they seemed pretty quick. When/if we get a chance to drive and/or test a set we will post it. From the times these cars were running they don't seem "uber" like tires but they don't seem slow, either. Another option.

Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1
I've only had a day or two of street driving on the Z1s. Fun to slide around with very little roll-over. They don't understeer as much as the RE-01Rs. Not as mushy as a some of the others.
Still probably have some mold release on them, and haven't had a chance to test once they're up to temp. Hope to test begining of next month. First impressions are that the compound probably has less ultimate grip than the top two tires, Neova and RE-01R, but the Z1s could be better than the rest due to the tire construction.

I know of several STU drivers testing these in the near future. I wish they made more sizes, of course!

Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1
Rick- Will you be running these tires at the CSCC event at CSW this coming weekend? I'll stop by and chat. PS-- the 195/55-15 has very similar size specs to the RT-615 205/50-15, and last week were $80 each on TireRack, now $84 each.

Thats good to hear, when I told some people about this tire on a local forum they all agreed that the tire was trash because it was made by Dunlop and had a treadwear of 200. Let us know how your times fare at your next event. Me and maybe a few local guys might pick up on these.

Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1
Check out this link: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/testDisplay.jsp?ttid=100I have been following the discussions everywhere, but haven't seen this test mentioned anywhere. For some reason it is hidden on Tirerack's website -Just found it. Looks like if money is no object Neova's are still the best, but Dunlop's are probably the best budget alternative.

Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1
Nice find. Looks like GRM has some more work to do. I'd have to see a lot of amazing data on some of these new tires to pursuade me a way from the Yok's though. The Dunlop's do look pretty good in the wet.
Next year might be interesting!
