In my search for the C71s, I called I think all of the companies mentioned in this thread. Most had very few in stock, and none carried my 275/35/18 in C71 compound. I ended getting a new local race shop to order it direct from the hankook warehouse, and they gave it to me at the 2007 C70 price. Thanks everyone!

Have you had a chance to run the 275s yet?

Re: Who's used the Hankook Z214??
Nice meeting you James. Just a minor correction, we ran on C70. We will do some further testing with Hankook at El Toro Pro before calling it quit, since BS is a highly contested class. Congrats on your win!

Its too cold here so not yet. April 6th is the first event here in Indy, but we're doubtful for the Arkansas Pro. Although I'm pretty much trophy fodder at national events, my codriver isn't, so I'll let you know his feedback. He will be at the Toro Pro on 285 Kumho V710s the week before so that should be a pretty good comparison. The 275/35/18 obviously will suffer in gearing not to mention width in comparison to the 285/30 Hoosiers and Kumhos...

Re: Who's used the Hankook Z214??
After eight Solo II events, my Hankook Ventus 214 C71 245/40-17's (thats a long description!) have lost grip. It was a slow process, they were AWESOME initially, and still have lots of rubber. But they now are seconds off pace. But what a long run! Our track area is bad WWII military asphalt.
OK, so the tires were fantastic... lets do it again. I call several "distributors" and "dealers", or whatever they are refered to.
The first distributor I phone has a recording stating that they are "at the track" and be sure to call back next Monday (this was on a Tuesday). Are they serious? If the recording said something like, "call back during business hours", I could understand. But call again five work days later?
Next call. "Oh Hankooks.... they have our name and number on their website because we might start carrying their tires. What are you looking for, I doubt we have it, but let's here what you're looking for.".
They had not what I was looking for and the gentleman on the phone was to check with the main warehouse and get back to me "in a couple of days". I never heard back from that 'dealer'.
Hankook, I'd love to use your tires but you make it impossible. A set of BFG R1 were ordered online, will arrive in three days from the midwest to MAUI and shipping will be all of $106. The first set of Hankooks cost me $65 PER tire for shipping. That's $260 for shipping alone. I wasn't given the pleasure as much as I was willing.

Re: Who's used the Hankook Z214??
That is terrible customer service! Frisby/Sierra travel to major races and are out quite a bit, but they never fail to call me back at least. Hmm.
I have forwarded this to Hankook to serve as customer input, thank you for your comments.

Sort of a thread hijack here, but what size wheels are you mounting your 285 v710s on? I've heard from some people that they are impossible to mount on my 18x8.5 wheels, and heard from others that they would work OK. For now we are going with 275/35s as well.

The 285 V710s are mounted on 18x8 wheels. They are VERY VERY difficult to mount apparently. By comparison the 285 Hoosiers and the 275 kooks were well within reason of any decent tire shop to mount on 18x8 wheels.
Scott B. Hughes:Hankook, I'd love to use your tires but you make it impossible.
Its too bad you didn't find a real Hankook distributor. They are able to search all the Hankook warehouses for inventory and have them drop shipped where ever you like. However, like Scott experienced, several of the shops I called were not able to do this.

Re: Who's used the Hankook Z214??
Update, After our win in HS at the San Diego NT, couldn't put it together for the ProSolo at El Toro. Only lost by 0.7 overall (and coned away a 0.4 pickup, for a potential 0.3 margin of loss) , probably attributed to a dying clutch. For the record, one pair of Z214's had 66 laps on them and the other pair had an estimated 140 laps on them....C71 compound. We ran the "old" ones up front for both groups on Saturday, and ran the "newer" ones on the front for Sunday morning, only gaining about 0.1 total improvement. They definitely cord before they "go away" at least for me. All tires were at least 1 year old, sitting in my garage in plastic bags in the dark, well-used. I think I will go with the C51's next time, they are nearly as fast and are supposed to last longer.

It wasn't so much that the tires were any more or less difficult to mount than any other low profile race tire, it was the fact that I chose your set of wheels and tires as my second experience with our then new high-falutin' fancy tire changin' machine. It has so many features and help arms I wasn't used to. I litterly pitched one wheel and tire assembly off of the machine with a help arm, that's why we replaced the one wheel, I tried to shoot it across the shop!

Re: Who's used the Hankook Z214??
Do you think that the 225/45/15 would fit on a 5.5x15 inch rim?
STS3gCivicSi:The 205's square up with a 6" wheel, there is no reason not to run the 225's on a 7" wheel. I run the 225/45-15 C71 compound on a 15X6 for stock class, works perfectly.

Sure, I would keep them in the sun before mounting to heat them up, but should not be a challenge. Let me know if you need photos of how the 225's look on the 6" wheels, Roy.

I would like to see a picture. Do they stick out pretty far past the edge of the rim? I'm just alittle worried about the tire rubbing. Joe Austin said he has put a 225/45/15 hoosier on a mini cooper 5.5 inch rim without it rubbing. I'm assuming that hankooks 225 is as wide as hoosiers 225?

Sure, they'll go on that size wheel, but, that size tire is really meant for a 7-9" wide wheel. The tire won't perform the way it was designed and possibly could lead to safety issues.
Want to run that size tire, get some wheels that those tires are meant to go on.

Re: Who's used the Hankook Z214??
STS3gCivicSi:I will post the Competition Guide, I have it somewhere buried in emails from Hankook. Includes scrub-in proceedures (detailed), pressure, temp guides per compound.
RACE TIRE USER GUIDE
Scuffing:
The longevity and consistency of the grip level can be increased
by properly scuffing a new set of race tires.
It's very important not to run hard for an entire session on new
tires. Think of it like breaking in a new engine, or bedding in new
brakes.
To scuff a set of tires, start by taking two or three
moderately paced laps to gradually bring the tires up to operating temperature,
and then run one hard lap followed by a cool down lap. The ideal situation would be to stop and
remove the tires from the car, and allow them to cool down to ambient
temperature before running them again.
When running an entire session on a new set of tires without
stopping, one should still follow the scuffing procedure at the beginning of
the session before turning laps at a fast pace. It’s also very important to run a slower lap at some point in the
middle of the session to allow the tires to cool off before running hard laps
again.
STS3gCivicSi: I do not heat cycle the tires before use, just run them hard right off the bat....I probably should take better care of them :)
So I haven't had a chance yet to break in my Z214 C71s yet. What are the thoughts on breaking them in by doing a local autox event, realizing that the first few runs will not be that competitive due to the mold release. Will I decrease the life span of the tire, or just have one event with slow times? The V710s and the A6s have different recommendations from tire rack regarding their break in procedure. Thanks.

Has anyone had trouble finding the Hankook Z214s in stock?? I've been calling around and have been told there is only a very limited supplies of the C71 compound (none in my size) and that there will not be another shipment until mid May?!?!?

^^^^ might be true. I would give a friendly call to the Hankook Tire USA office, but Jeff Koehler (Motorsports Marketing Manager) is now working for Pirelli as of 4/18....oh well. Keep on pluggin' I guess.
