It just came to me that you guys might want to know where my starting point was with the tape measure.  I basically put the end of the tape where it was flush with the surface the tires/wheels were laying on.  So, that might help explain why it is measuring more than the specs.  With that being said, here are the links to the full sized images where you can zoom in on the bottom for the starting point and where it ends.

 I figured that's what you did and that was perfect. The actual width of the tire didn't measure more than published specs, just what I perceive the treadwidth to be.

Thanks for the pics!  I think the pics are mislabeled though, the 6.5 is actually the 7.5, and vice versa. 

Tirerack shows the 16" BFGs to be available tomorrow - decisions decisions... and I didn't even want to buy tires this year!

Scuffing:
To scuff a set of tires, start by taking two or three moderately paced laps to gradually bring the tires up to operating temperature, and then run one hard lap followed by a cool down lap.  The ideal situation would be to stop and remove the tires from the car, and allow them to cool down to ambient temperature before running them again.

Temperature:
Tread temperature will vary depending on ambient and track temperature, the type of circuit, and the type of car.  The temperature should be within a range of 160 to 220 degrees when measured in pit lane.  Optimum grip level is at 180 to 200 degrees.

Okay... tomorrow afternoon I am going to take the Z214's out on the road (and find some vacant parking lot) to scuff and heat cycle them. From what I've read, I need to do the following:

1. Get the tires up to 160-220 degrees by driving at a moderate pace (assuming "moderate" track speeds... should take ~2-3 laps)
2. Once up to temperature, drive it hard for 1/2 or 1/3 of the time it took to get it to 160-220 degrees
3. Cool the tires down by driving it easy for 1/2 or 1/3 of the time it took to get to 160-220 degrees. (hopefully in to my garage)
4. Remove the wheels/tires and stack them on top of each other over night.... then I'm good to go to kick some tail at some autocrosses.

1. What would be considered a typical time of 1 lap at a track?
2. What would be considered moderate handling G's and speed?
3.  What would be considered hard handling G's and speed?
4. What would be considered easy handling G's and speed?

After to digging some more.... According to this image, the temp for the C70 is different than what was posted above... it should be brought up to 120-190.

Hey Dave, I think it would be safe to follow the same guidelines I've been told for heat cycling the V710's. I don't think it's necessary to follow the instructions that literally. Just put them on, drive like an average person on some nice smooth concrete for about 15-20 minutes (avoid surfaces that might damage them of course), then remove and cool. If it's a hot day and the surface is hot, shorten the length of time a bit. That's really all you should need to do.

Of course there's another school of thought on the V710's that says to scrub them down with simple green, and run them new for best results. It all depends on who you talk to. If it was me with the Hankooks, I'd go with the first option.

Whew!  That is more of what I was planning on doing... drive it on a semi-curvy country road until it reaches 130'ish, do a few figure 8's, drive it home easy, stack 'em up, until next weekend.

BTW, I haven't heard the simple green approach. I'll remember that if I ever go back to the V710's.

Not a problem... I saw that you with a customer, but it really worked out as I had to make the mad dash in and out.

When I stopped by your work, I was actually concerned if the wheels staying on with the new spacers... so I was checking the TQ and the temperature to see if I got them hot enough... it was pretty close so I would believe that during the run, so I would believe that they got hot enough while I was on that road across the bypass.  It was strangely busy in our small town today, so I also was only able to do ~6-8 figure "8's" for the scrubbing behind the mall and then Kroger... Crazy...

I had the Z214's mounted on Friday and drove the 10 miles home as my 'scrubbing in'.  Remounted at the track yesterday for our monthly Solo II event.

Our surface is rough, abrasive OLD military asphalt.  First run the car was lose, but once a bit warmer, runs and three were good.  Fourth run I pushed a bit much and lost .5 from my faster 65.07 third run. I feel these tires are great.

Went from using 255/40-17 VRs for ~three years. The 214s are the new 245/40-17 C51, not the auto-cross compound (C70).

The car is a 3000 lb. 99 M3, running in BSP.  I'm not sure how long they will last, but I'm likely to purchase more in the future!

I was wondering the same thing.  I know when I mounted the Kook's for him the fronts (6.5) wheel with a 245....I was really concerned about them seating up.  They seem to be pinched but the blocked pattern of the Kook vs. the 710 may give the advantage to the Kook's. 

My new BFG's are supposed to be in this week..(205/50R15) for some "testing action" and comments to my MAST folks about the performance.  I will post information about the tires when they arrive with some pics and stuff.  My fear is that I am going to like the BFG's.  I have such a loyalty to Kumho.

BUT, if BFG comes with contingency....then that may make it difficult.  However, my choice will still be the Kumho.

Is the BFG contingency supposed to be Tours only, not pros? Kumho and Hankook pay out for both, an advatage to going with those if you're fast :)

...although BFG is coming out with a 255/40/17 which would be beautiful for my DS car.

Good to see you like the tires!

What made you go with the C51 compound, rather than the C70?...I presume it's the track surface at your autox site.  If you were on smooth asphalt would you have picked the C70?

Wow! That is great news that you did so well with the C51's.  That's an amazing turnaround with the M5 as your baseline (2.56 behind to a 1.15 lead).

Pardon me if I missed it but Dave, any chance you weighed the 245/45/16s?
