Re: Who's used the Hankook Z214??
Even more great info! Keep it coming guys. I may have to try a set of these instead of the V710s on my CSP car. I like the 225/45/13 sizing better also.

Re: Who's used the Hankook Z214??
STS3gCivicSi:
I can weigh mine when I get a new pair this week, both "new" and "used", I have been through a few sets already in two seasons, but never bothered to weigh them. 225/45-15. Probably going to be ligher than a V710 but heavier than an A6, but that is an uneducated guess at this point.
EDIT-
If anyone would like one of the new Hankook Motorsports brochures with technical specifications, compounds, sizes, etc. you can send me your address either post here, or email jamesnwilson AT hotmail.com
James, I'm going to be at Atwater and am very interested in checking out this tire. Can you bring a couple brochures with you and would you mind if I take a look see?

Re: Who's used the Hankook Z214??
Apparently all of DS is interested in this tire! I'm looking into it as
a possibility for the prosolo car. I'm already running Hankooks on my
STS car, why not these too?

Very interesting. They concluded it was too close to call. The only thing I haven't seen asked so far is how they deal with heat in comparison to the 710s and Hoosiers. Anyone want to chime in on that. Being in Houston we frequently have to spray to cool.

If that's how well the C70 compound did, it'll be interesting to see just how much faster the C71 compound is...

Re: Who's used the Hankook Z214??
My thought is this. If they really are equal to V710 and A6, then how come we don't see anyone (or hardly anyone) using them? They've been out for like 2 years. They're contingency is awesome compared to Kumho/Hoosier. Just doesn't make sense. The article makes me think twice cause I don't have ABS. BTW, Leadfoot, are you planning on doing the Houston Tour? Is anybody in HS planning on it? I would like to make the trip down but only for some competition. Van

Re: Who's used the Hankook Z214??
Well I have been dodging cones for 3 years now and I have only started to learn of these tires. The compound rating is opposite of what I have learned. Finding the tire in my size and a dealer is pretty scarce. Only this week since all of you guys posted awesome links.
We will probably get some of these for my son's H stock car (not going to Houston)
My 914 runs slicks unles Hankook makes one of them 275/35-15 big honkin tires. and I am going to Houston (look for silly looking clown car)
Want to go faster, please send money.

That's my home turf, so I will definitely be there. I have a co-driver as well so there will be at least 2 of us. I look forward to meeting you if you decide to come down.

Also local boy Eric Jonasch is fast enough to get a top 10 in Topeka in HS for sure. He should be there as well. Hopefully Don will have the 3s figured out by then :)

Re: Who's used the Hankook Z214??
I see your point here. But, at the same time they weren't too 'readily' available until recently. Only certain sizes and certain compounds were available, and that may have limited people's choices. Now the tires are easier to get. That's only my experience, and probably a wild theory.
As far as the GRM article saying the Hankooks had good lateral grip, but not horizontal grip--I guess that's not too much of a problem in an HS car.

Re: Who's used the Hankook Z214??
I will be at the Atwater Tour in HS with the Subaru, I just haven't signed up yet (need to do so tonight, or I will forget!). I will bring brochures and swag for those who are interested. The Hankooks just haven't been heavily marketed to autocrossers like the other brands. They do quite well in Road Racing and other events, gaining use as the spec SpecMiata and Pro MX-5 Cup tires the last few years, as well as spec USTCC tire. This year is the first push at autocrossing, and I hope we can shed some light on a great product with good contingency, that performs as well (if not better) as the Old Standards but for less $$$$. PS-- I hear that the "old" C70 from yesteryear is a bit different than the "new" C70 and C91. I would like to see another test, this one with a little more data than simply lap times...that is why I plan on the Buetzer Test with full data, video, and in-depth analysis.
I will also be at the Houston NT and Mineral Wells ProSolo next month, also in the Subaru (if it is still alive, it is getting old and creaky hehe). -JW

You better hurry. 295 entries, 300 cap, and I don't see your name on the list yet! STS3gCivicSi:PS-- I hear that the "old" C70 from yesteryear is a bit different than the "new" C70 and C91. Is there anyone at Hankook that could shed some light on that? That and your Buetzer Test will definitely help my decision which right now is 50/50 Hankook/Kumho. Looking forward to seeing how you do. I do plan on being at the Mineral Wells Pro. And maybe Houston. Van

Re: Who's used the Hankook Z214??
Yeah, I am waaay swamped with work and an infant daughter at home, and this was "You better do your taxes, stupid" weekend. Faxed off the entry just now....I have a codriver who is smarter than me, hopefully that can be some leverage to get in (and that my entry would make a 5-car class). I would probably be your best bet for info right now, as they are pretty busy (Jeff Koehler is the contact), I speak a lot with their engineers as well. Just got a pair of 225/45-15 Z214's (C70) at my door, 19.5lbs each....heavy! BUT, as confirmed by Randy Chase, they are WAAAAAAY stiff, definitely stiffer than a V710 and Hoosier. Hankook has been discussing removing a sidewall ply to reduce weight, looks like they might have a little room to do so :)

Stiff sounds good. I'd be using 225/50/14's and 205/55/14's. BTW, is there a link with weights? I don't remember seeing any anywhere. Van

Re: Who's used the Hankook Z214??
ileagle:
I'm drive the DS Talon your fellow racer is probably refering to. I came in 1st in DS at a Pro & Tour, and had a 2nd place finish at another Pro on the Hankooks before my car alignment went all to sh1t.
My impressions of the Z214 is that it compares well to A6 (just as quick, slightly better wear). The only reason I tried the Z214's was that the Kumho V710 doesn't come in a size to fit my skinny rims, so I can't really compare it to the Kuhmo.
I did switch to the Hoosier A6 for nationals (it wasn't until just before Nationals that Hankook offered more than 7 sizes). After trying to shoe horn a 245/40/17 Hoosier A6 onto a 6.5" wide rim (in an attempt to see if maybe the taller 245/45/17 V710 would fit, it wouldn't), then the A6 came out in a 225/40/17 (I like the shorter gearing) so that's what I ran at nationals. If the Z214 came in the 225/40/17 I would have run them for nationals instead. I still have some Hankook contingency $ left, that I'm going to use to see if the Z214 245/40/17's might work.
Just be sure to get the C70 compound.
Did you ever get those 245/40-17's on there?
