    Who's used the Hankook Z214??

Ok so i'm going with a new tire size from last year, i used the 245/35R18 V710 and want more tire under my heavy car. i know the 285/30's from hoosier fit, but if i was going to buy those i would go with the 275/35 because i want taller gears not shorter ones. i was going to go with the Hoosier but i do 16 regional events a year and then this year i'm doing at least one tour and then nationals. i really don't think that the hoosiers will last the regionals and tour events, as i plan to buy new tires for US nationals anyways. i've got a good price on the Z214's from a fellow racer that just signed up with hankook at the shop he works for and am tempted to try them. he himself has been beaten by a DS talon running these tires well he was on the A6's so they must be pretty decient. just wondering if others have stories to tell about them, good or bad.

    thanks for the info

Re: Who's used the Hankook Z214??

I'm drive the DS Talon your fellow racer is probably refering to. I came in 1st in DS at a Pro & Tour, and had a 2nd place finish at another Pro on the Hankooks before my car alignment went all to sh1t.

My impressions of the Z214 is that it compares well to A6 (just as quick, slightly better wear). The only reason I tried the Z214's was that the Kumho V710 doesn't come in a size to fit my skinny rims, so I can't really compare it to the Kuhmo.

I did switch to the Hoosier A6 for nationals (it wasn't until just before Nationals that Hankook offered more than 7 sizes). After trying to shoe horn a 245/40/17 Hoosier A6 onto a 6.5" wide rim (in an attempt to see if  maybe the taller 245/45/17 V710 would fit, it wouldn't), then the A6 came out in a 225/40/17 (I like the shorter gearing) so that's what I ran at nationals. If the Z214 came in the 225/40/17 I would have run them for nationals instead. I still have some Hankook contingency $ left, that I'm going to use to see if the Z214 245/40/17's might work.

Just be sure to get the C70 compound.

Re: Who's used the Hankook Z214??

Does anybody have any experience with tire wear in comparison with the V710?

Also, do these tires drive more like Hoosiers or V710s?

I'm also interested in these. It's hard to even find where to buy them online. It's strange that the Tirerack carries Hankooks, but not these.

Frisby Performance Tire seems like the best place to find them.

Aim Tire also carries them, but does anybody have a comparison with them to the Hoosiers or Kumho V710?  Other than the GRM article?

Re: Who's used the Hankook Z214??

I've run two events on them (the C70 compound) this year (neither event was in my car). Big Smile Grip is good, at least par to the 710s I've had in the past. I just ordered up a set for my new (er, pre-owned, new to me) Mazda 3 in 17 inch sizes. As far as wear, the set on the other car lasted about 50 runs, but that is on a *very* camber challenged car. If you flip them and take care of them, I could see the Hankooks lasting around 80 runs.

EDIT--I bought my tires from wheelstore in CA. Don't know if they ship or not...but they got the tires quickly and mounted them for less than I've seen on other sites for just the tires...The owner supports local autocrossers and sometimes shows up himself.

Great info!  50 runs doesn't sound too bad for a stock class FWD.

How do they compare to the 710s in transitions?

H-Stock Subaru Impreza, is AWD.  Got about 50 runs out of the 225/45-15 C70 compound, with exactly ZERO degrees front camber, and 27 of those runs at the El Toro ProSolo (very abrasive) with two drivers.  Plenty of tread left, just down to the wear bars at 2/32nds, but just edgeworn enough to barely spot-cord on one tire.  I plan on running a pair of new tires for the Atwater Tour on the front, and let the rears riiiide.

    http://www.hankooktireusa.com/press/press_press_view.asp?pid=163

Overall, I would definitely say that the C70 has better overall grip than a V710, and probably spot-on if not a touch better than an A6....but far better wear.  Hankook has mentioned that they have been planning on dropping their tire prices, while the others have had an increase recently.  With Hankook's top-notch Contingency payouts ($400 cash for wins, down to 3rd) and good motorsports support (albiet dealing with a slowly-growing Dealer base has been an issue, but far better than it was even 6 months ago) makes Hankook a great tire to drive on.

Another benefit is that most all sizes come in 2 or 3 different compounds.  For autocrossers, that means you can run a medium compound in the rear to get some rotation, and the softer compound up front.  Or if you just drive locally, you can choose the medium compound and get a ton more runs on them (like the V710, just faster)....or if you car is hard on tires, like mine.  I was actually thinking about running the medium (C50) compound at future events, so I could focus on driving the snot out of the car and not subconsciously "save the tires".

So the 70 is the softer compound? I had assumed it was the 50.

    I thought the 30 was the softest. But it's ONLY in a 205/50-15 :(

Re: Who's used the Hankook Z214??

C30 is the hardest, wears like iron, great for endurance racing, like the new-compound Toyo RA1 but a more "slick" tread design.

C50 is the medium compound, like a Hoosier R6 or Kumho V710

C70 is the soft compound, like an A6.

Funny, at the Runoffs this past year, it was so cold during the T3 race that the top 3 drivers (at least) were all on autocross-compound tires, with the lead two RX-8's on Hoosier A6, while the 3rd place Mazdaspeed MX-5 was on C70 Hankook Z214's.

Can anyone shed some light on relative weights between the Hankook, Hoosier A6s and the V710s?

Re: Who's used the Hankook Z214??

I can weigh mine when I get a new pair this week, both "new" and "used", I have been through a few sets already in two seasons, but never bothered to weigh them.  225/45-15.  Probably going to be ligher than a V710 but heavier than an A6, but that is an uneducated guess at this point.

    EDIT-

If anyone would like one of the new Hankook Motorsports brochures with technical specifications, compounds, sizes, etc.  you can send me your address either post here, or email jamesnwilson AT hotmail.com

Any real data to support these comments?  Or just your gut feel on your Impreza?

Re: Who's used the Hankook Z214??

Word on the paddock at Runoff's last year, talking with a lot of other Regional drivers, and meetings with one of Hankook's main tire engineers.  They specifically targeted these other brands and created a tire to match/compete with, but at a lower price.  Having driven on R1's, RA1's, Victoracers, A4's and A5's, and a slough of street tires on mostly crappy cars (enter: Impreza) that rely way too much on the saving grace of a good tire, I can definitely say that the Hankook works the best for me.  "On the (w)hole, I would say preparation H feels pretty good."

If I could afford a set of A6's to cord in an afternoon on the Subaru, I would.

I will be supplying Ryan Buetzer with a set of tires for his/Tim's C-Stock car, for back-to-back comparison with the current A6 and V710...we will be using data acquisition, video analysis, and temperature testing.  This will be a better test than the Subaru, as the Miata is more in line with sporty autocross cars, and Ryan tends to not leave much out on course. Not sure which site we are going to use, San Diego is going to crap, but its surface and California Speedway feels not unlike Heartland Park.  We'll keep everyone posted.

Re: Who's used the Hankook Z214??

I recently bought my 225/40/18 Z214's from Frisby tire and the rep mentioned that Hankook should be releasing a C71 compound later this season.  It should give the A6's extra grip (perceived?) a run for the money.

Will these tires need/benefit from shaving?

James, do you heat cycle them before use?

Re: Who's used the Hankook Z214??

The tires are nearly a "slick", very much in appearance to a Hoosier A6 or Kumho V710.  This prevents the need for shaving, as you are not "removing" tread to reduce squirm.

I do not heat cycle the tires before use, just run them hard right off the bat....I probably should take better care of them :)

hmm they have a 275/35/18 and it is $20 cheaper than the 245/35/18 v710

might have to look into these for my rx8 after the v710 are done.
