Re: 2007 Southwest Division Solo Championship Series Schedule

The weekend of June 22-24 was host to SCCA Southwest Divisional #1 for 2007.  Entries were greeted at the host hotel with pizza and refreshements complimentary of Houston Region SCCA.  102 entries checked in for the event, a good start to renergizing the Southwest Divisional Series.

Saturday opened up with grey skies and tons of humidity.   Temperatures were in the 80's making it bearable for a Texas Summer.  Everyone was introduced to a Roger Johnson course that was definitely national caliber.  The day was divided into two heats offering everyone four chances at laying down the winning run.  SuperStock, AStock and STU represented the strongest participation for the event.  SS Corvette driver, Lance Adams, threw down the gauntlet on his second pass besting the rest of the field by a full second and never looked back.  AS saw former Fstocker, Frank "Wilson" Bryan, take the lead on Day 1 by a tenth over heavy favorite, David Hedderick, in a Solstice owned by third place Adam Faust.  The rest of the 14 car class was left scratching their heads.  Mick Harrison of Texas region, led the Cstock field after day one besting former National champ Chris Williams buy a slight tick of the clock.  ESP only had two entrants but one of them was the amazing Mark Madarash.  Trying a new chassis setup, he blistered the pax even suffering from the flu.  CP saw Alan Bartling take the day 1 lead in Tony Espinosa's Mustang after Donna Bartling kicked a rod out of the family mustang during CPL.  STU featured a great mix of cars and competitors.  Vitek Boruvka in his new '07 AxWare Subaru Sti surprised everyone taking the lead in his first event in the car.  Following closely was Houston's Alex Ponce de Leon in an '04 Sti, Texas region's Jason McCall in the Vorshlag Evo,  Terry Fair in the Vorshlag BMW and hometown hero Christoper Stokes in another BMW.  All were within a second after day 1.  At the conclusion of runs, Houston region treated everyone to a buffet style lunch including margaritas and a heap of bench racing.

Saturday's overcast blew out and Sunday opened up with bright sun and a nice gulfcoast breeze.  Day 2's course was much more technical with much more speed variation, heavy braking all making car placement critical.  Texas Spoke's member, Lance Adams, picked up where he left off besting the SS field by 3 secs for the weekend.  Scott Bowman made a comeback from 4th to finish 2nd over Mike Homes and Denny Feigenspan.  Lance proved the Corvette the winner over the Lotus and the Porsche for this event.   AS saw Frank Bryan faulter and let David Hedderick charge to the win.  Chris Williams jumped to the lead on Day 2 and proclaimed he would have been faster if it had rained!  Madarash drove his Trans Am to the overall pax win leaving everyone scratching their heads asking 'that's an fbody?'  STU was a great race to watch with Jason McCall jump to the lead with a run .5 secs better than the rest of the field.  Ponce de Leon and Boruvka both had to stand on their first runs and were no match for Vorshlag's McCall.  CP's Tony Espinosa scored the come from behind victory besting his codriver Alan Bartling and Gene Beaird.

Sportsmanship award for the weekend goes to Tom Holt for inviting Spokes' president, Rick Martinez, to finish the event in the AxWare, RAW Graphics Zcar after Rick sufferred a clutch/transmission failure.  Plaques were awarded to all trophy slots with the winner taking a custom coffee mug home with their plaque.  Many thanks go to Houston region sponsors Gulf Greyhound Park and Apex vinyl as well as SWDiv sponsors Xpel Paint Protection, DLB racing, AxWare, Simpson, SCCA and North American Pylon.  Next event will be hosted by Texas Spokes/Lone Star Region SCCA  July 27-29 in Pearsall, TX.  Come on out and try it Texas style!!

If it's some kind of PAX redemption you seek...well, then bring it on!  This is only the second ever autocross at TVTC so there are no favorites here.  No "home court advantage" to hide behind.  And no excuses.  Just a level playing field (literally! well, a 3-degree grade for drainage ;) with the smoothest and most consistent asphalt in Texas.  Are you quick enough?

    Texas Region Divisional - SOWDIV Divisional #3, August 17th - 19th

    Hey Folks!

The great "OZ-Webmaster" (Kenny Baker ) has set-up a poll for me on the Texas Region SCCA Solo Home page http://autocross.com/texasregion/.

Please take a moment & participate so that we can get an estimate for how many people are going to attend the August Divisional in Fort Worth.

I know most of us enter towards the last week or two before the event due to work situations and so-forth, but we need to get a feel for how many people are planning on attending the event so we can order food/beverages & things like T-Shirts.

    One more note:
For those of you that drive a Subaru.

Subaru of Dallas has a contingency program for the Texas Region Solo program this year. The Divisional in August is included in that program!

You do have to preregister in the contigency program & use their decals though.

For more information, there's a link on the Texas Region Solo page on the right hand side (on the above link).

    Thanks for your time,

    Southwest Divisional PAX Showdown

Texas Spokes Sports Car Club and Lone Star Region SCCA will be holding a PAX Showdown at the end of Day 1 of Southwest Divisional #2!  The rules for this showdown are very simple :

    • At the end of Saturday's runs we will figure the PAX standings for the day and the top three (3) finishers will be awarded one bonus run on Saturday's course.
    • These runs will occur after competition runs are complete and will not count toward class competition.
    • These runs will be indexed and the competitor with the fastest PAX time on their bonus run will be crowned the Southwest Divisional PAX Showdown Champion!
    • We'll have a special trophy (and maybe some bonus prizes) for the winner.

That's it.  Lance is the course designer, are you just going to give it to him without a fight?  Go register!

Re: 2007 Southwest Division Solo Championship Series Schedule

We got a call from the owner of the Lytle Days Inn and he said that only 11 rooms have been used out of our reserved block and he will only hold the remainder for one more day.  So it you want a room at Hotel Central for the Pearsall Divisional you must call and reserve it TONIGHT!  Here are the details from our Divisional website:

    Lytle Days Inn (Hotel Central)
    19525 McDonald Street
    Lytle, TX  78052
    (830) 772-4777

$59.95-double, 25 rooms reserved for "SCCA".  Please mention that you are with the SCCA first to avoid confusion with the Days Inn staff.

    Thanks!

Re: 2007 Southwest Division Solo Championship Series Schedule

If you are planning on going or are even considering going to the Spokes/LSR Southwest Divisional at TVTC please read this!  This is very important information about the site and other event details.  A lot of this will also be in the event Supplemental Regulations but I figured I'd get this out there early for those still on the fence about attending.  Thanks.  Rick Martinez, Divisional Chair

Bring shade.  Umbrellas, EZ-Ups, whatever you got.  The logistics for the big tent just didn't work out this year but it's still going to be hot so bring your own shade!  After competition is over there's plenty of covered lounging area under the awning near the TVTC building.  This area is where we will have the Friday and Saturday night get togethers (w/ food!)

Bring chairs.  Folding camping chairs are the best.  You'll want them for the Friday and Saturday night socials while relaxing under the awning.

Bring sunscreen.  If you've been autocrossing long enough in Texas you already know about this one.  Don't forget it.

Wood blocks for jacks.  The area where we will paddock is on part of the TVTC road course.  It's asphalt and in the middle of summer it can get soft.  Bring adequately sized wood blocks to place under your jack when changing your tires to prevent damage to the asphalt.

Soft turf and mud.  If you haven't noticed lately, we've had an extraordinary amount of precipitation for this time of year.  If you are camping or parking your RV in the designated camping area near the frontage road please be aware of the ground conditions.  Please do not tear up the property.  Use your best judgment when parking.

Trucks and trailers.  The paddock area may be kind of tight so please try to relocate your unloaded trailers somewhere in the grass for the weekend.  Again, be aware of soft turf and/or mud.  Do not tear up the property.

TVTC facilities.  The TVTC building and road course are off limits for the duration of the event.  Do not enter the building offices or the garage area.  Do not drive on the road course except for the designated paddock area.  The covered awning area is fine for hanging out but do not go inside unless specifically invited by one of the TVTC employees.  In general, please be respectful of all TVTC property.

Food and beverages.  Food and beverages will be served at registration on Friday starting around 6:30pm and at the social on Saturday starting around 5:00pm.  Food is included in the cost of your entry.  Tom Holt will be handling grill master duties on Friday with a menu selection of the finest backyard burgers in town.  Saturday's festivities will be catered by Louie Martinez and will consist of BBQ brisket, sausage, and chicken and all of the fixin's you've come to love living in Texas.

Water and ice.  John & Corky's Automotive Specialist (JC Autospec) has graciously offered to provide water and ice for our Divisional!  Be sure to thank them by visiting their shop in Round Rock for all of your automotive service needs.  Dan drives a Mini so if you are headed toward the event site and are not sure what to bring, forget the obligatory bottle of wine and bring us extra ice!  It's cheaper than wine and you can never have too much ice on a hot summer day!

Raffle.  Our hosts, Cooper Tire and Vehicle Test Center, have donated a set of Cooper tires (passenger car or light truck) for our Divisional.  We will be raffling off these tires during the Saturday night social.  Keep those tickets!

Practice runs.  Lance Adams (Chief of Course Design) will be running a practice course on the main autocross pad from 1:00pm to 3:30pm on Friday.  Runs will be timed and those practicing will be responsible for picking up their own down cones.  Contact Lance for more info.

Runs.  We'll be doing 4 competition runs per day instead of the usual 3.  Divisional format so fastest time on Saturday will be added to fastest time on Sunday for your total time.

Numbers.  Magnetic or static cling numbers are recommended but not required.  Numbers should be large and legible regardless of the material.  No shoe polish.  If you are single driver you must use a number between 1 and 99.  If you are running a two driver car then the first driver must run 1-99 and the second driver must run 101-199.  For example if the first driver is 62 then the second driver of the car must be 162.  This is old hat for the veterans but some of the new folks may not be aware of these rules.

PAX Showdown.  Rules for the PAX Showdown have been modified slightly to make it more fun for everyone.  At the end of competition runs on Saturday the top three finishers in PAX will automatically be entered into the PAX Showdown.  In addition to these three finishers, we will randomly pick three more drivers using the raffle tickets handed out at registration.  These three random drivers will also be entered into the PAX Showdown.  Each of these six competitors will be given one bonus run in their own car.  The bonus run times will be compared to the competitor's fastest run during competition.  The Showdown driver that improves the most over their fastest competition run will be declared the winner.  If one of the bonus entrants coned all runs during the day then their  bonus run time will be compared to their fastest raw time of the day.  Anything can happen!

There you have it folks, we're getting close now! The event of the season is this weekend and I've posted the course maps at the links above. Huge thanks to Chief of Course Design Lance Adams for generating two awesome courses for the weekend. And thanks to Roger Johnson for his consultation services. Re: 2007 Southwest Division Solo Championship Series Schedule

Had a great time at the Pearsall Div!!

Saturday was a blast in the dry.

Sunday gave me that "slap-n-face", "get-off your-but" & order the Hoosier Wets push I needed.

Lots of competitors saying the surface was very close to being the same as the Nationals suface!

A BIG THANKS to the Spokes/Lone Star SCCA bunch for putting on a great event!

Can't wait for next year (...... except for the rain part).
