    Re: Andy's STS2 Miata Project

    Andy,

Good luck with the car! I was doing some research into running the Miata for the class, I also feel that it should faster than the CRX, but there is just something about those damn Honda's. Smile [:)] I liked Kevin's idea of running a Z3 though. I'd probably also go with the 1.6, too bad Mazda didn't offer the same rear with the 1.8.

I think the weight distribution factor will be an overall advantage, but I'm also thinking that having an open diff is going to limit your ability to get on the gas earlier when compared to an open diff fwd car, unless the vsld does actually do something. I've been doing some modeling in lapsim comparing my car to some rwd cars out there and I have seen this.

    Re: Andy's STS2 Miata Project

With my car, I've never had an issue of inside rear wheel spin with the VLSD and the Koni D/A's.  Similar to the Honda's... the low relative HP and torque of the car just don't create that much of a problem.  Even in the rain at Nationals...

I guess it's finally time to start purchasing parts with my winter slush fund........

    Welcome Andy!

hmm, guess that's my cue to start "Mark's STU RX-8 Project"

"the Civic numbers were converted downward using typical conversion estimates."

Wow...that's about 12%...dare i say the numbers out loud. Big Smile [:D]  I also didn't think the Mazda motor had it in it...impressive. Gonna be one fast sts2 car.

ps...everyone else hiding their dyno sheets under their matresses can take them out now.

Edited to correct numbers. Smile [:)]

12% was not the conversion used.  More like 5 lb/ft., based on ART's experience using both dynos.  We'll know more when we put the Civic on their dyno, but that won't happen until the Miata motor is done and in the car.

Gotcha...5 is more in line with what I would expect...was reading that the mustang dyno, if that's the one that was used, compensates for drivetrain losses, guess  it doesn't do it automatically though.

Dyno Dynamics.  I don't which model off-hand, though. Nor do I know what mode it was run in. I just used the conversion they suggested.

Is somebody out there actually running a Z3 in STS2?  I'm thinking seriously about it.

Do it.  The 1.9 Z3 is not exactly a powerhouse in the engine bay, but its a good handling car and it can use the largest ST tires with no issue.  And its got the infamous BMW handling and the even more infamous BMW contingency program.

Z3s, Miatas, CRXs, RX7s, MR2s... such great little personal cars in close battle. :)

Though I know you'll be dusting me in the miata, I'm grateful for what you are doing for STS2, Andy. :)

    Re: Andy's STS2 Miata Project

    Andy,

Very interesting. Just for the heck of it,  I'm going to get a 1st gen Miata next week and start prepping it for STS2 and compare it to the STS Civic. I figure springs, shocks, alignment, stabilizer bars, and I'm mostly there. Bushings next along with weight reduction. Slap on the Civic wheels and see what kind of times it can do. We can take down those pesky wrong-wheel drive Honduhs.

You're right, Andy.  The car really does have some things going for it - and what it lacks in HP, it makes up by being heavy!  :>)

I just ordered a set of MXs.

    John-

Glad to hear it, we need some more STS2 cars in NC. I heard Baggie is going to Spec Miata with his so it's good to have someone else running with CCR!

Yep, Scott.  It looks like we're losing the "BagMan."

I'm going to de-commission the ASP car, and plan to do STS2 in CCR & SCR.  I'm tired of dragging Hoosiers all over the Carolinas.

But these first few months are going to be about development since I'm getting such a late start.

Very good read Andy.  What do you expect for power figures?  Are you going to post the dyno sheets?  Or just tell us, "Today we went to the dyno".

Seriously though, really looking forward to the end product.  As I'm sure you are as well.  Well you be making a debut in Arkansas or out west?

Go to the GRM site and read all the installments.  Your questions have all been answered.  Smile [:)]

In short, I would expect 120-125 in Dynojet #'s and yes I'll post dyno sheets.  I hope to debut the car in CA.  Not sure what I'll bring to AR.

Yes, I noticed the stock dyno ;)

    Thats very impressive.

Also impresive, I wasn't sure if you would have to car together for a left coast visit.  Well whatever you do bring to AR, leave it out of STU! :)
