Andy's STS2 Miata Project
Read here: http://grmotorsports.com/news/012006/an-idea-takes-hold.php
As I've hinted at in other threads, I'm tired of STS2 becoming "yet another Honda class", and I'm also looking to do my part in helping get class attendance up this year to support national class status approval. I'm going to try and keep this particular thread focused on that topic, with primary info coming through the blog at GRM. I'm actually further along than the first installment indicates but I wanted to start at the beginning.
Looking forward to kicking some Honda booty! Oh wait...I drive one of those, too. ![Surprise [:O]](/emoticons/emotion-3.gif)
--Andy
PS: We'll be driving the STS Civic at a bunch of events, too.

Very cool Andy. I had heard rumors of the CSP car coming back to life. I guess they were only partially true! Look forward to reading your progress.
One question, is there a reason you're going to use the civic rolling stock and not uprgade to 225's?

Gearing on the 1.6 Miata is essentially the same as the Civic. 225's would require a gearing hit and that would be bad for acceleration. Remember, these cars do not have much motor. As it stands, the Miata has better weight balance so it should use the 205's more effectively than the Honda.

Re: Andy's STS2 Miata Project
Good to hear the news officially, it will be nice to see the Miata in action, and to have you show what can be done with that platform. I agree that it can be a great car for the class. GL and hope to see it out soon!

Re: Andy's STS2 Miata Project
Andy...as I've mentioned before...I think you'll find that car in STS2 *very* successful.
What kind of curb weight we talking with that car in full ST trim?

Re: Andy's STS2 Miata Project
All right! I'm pumped now. I've been waiting for someone like you to
put some real development (and a decent driver) into a Miata. I plan on
getting a Miata when the Contour goes (150k and still rolling - why
won't it die?), and STS2 is the place to go after the mod bug gets me
out of ES. I'll be watching carefully...

Re: Andy's STS2 Miata Project
Can't you start with another Miata body? I'll volunteer to buy the CSP car.

I'll be doing an installment on weight this week.
Suffice it to say that it weighed 1900 in SP trim and 2015 in ES trim. It should land right in the middle.

PS: Greg: I'm reusing a lot of the CSP suspension stuff. And the rest if it will be put on the shelf since I think the car will eventually see CSP action again (or DP).

I figured as much, but hey it was worth a try.
Looking forward to seeing it in STS2.

Re: Andy's STS2 Miata Project
Hmmm, a blog of a mold-defying ST car build...sounds like a good idea! :-)
Better take the build slow, or you'll scare away more people from the class than you'll attract!

So, what you are saying is that there are no "decent drivers" in STS2? What do you think the other STS2 drivers will think about your comment?

Oh goodness. I just meant that a well-developed car is nothing without
a good driver: not that STS2 was finally getting a good driver. I guess
you could read it that way, though, so my apologies if you thought I
was being hard on the current crop of STS2 drivers.

Re: Andy's STS2 Miata Project
Thanks Andy, you have made my recent decision of sticking w/my STS2 Miata this year (rather than jumping to STS) even more validated. I know a lot of people readily assume the CRX is going to be "the" car for this class, but I think this is based subjectively on how the Civic's dominate STS. I believe this will truly be a class where there is no clear "car to have", & in turn will draw many competetors in the future. I wish I could have made it to Topeka in September so that I could have done my part in proving that STS2 is in fact NOT just another Honda class. I will be there w/you this year Andy, as well as the west coast Tours.

Re: Andy's STS2 Miata Project
Very cool. If you don't already have other ideas, you may want to look at megasquirt for engine management.

Re: Andy's STS2 Miata Project
Andy--
I hope you don't mind, but I linked to your GRM blog over at autocrossforums.com, in the ST section. There are a few clubs over there that might miss the discussions here and at GRM, or miata.net.
I'm interested to see what you can do--I ran STS2 last year with my 91--poorly, I might add--and I took the plunge for 13inch wheels and Hoosiers to go to CSP. I'm thinking of staying put, however, depending on what you can come up with!

Thanks. I'd forgotten about your car. Might be worth some more anal-ysis. Or maybe I should just start doing some real work in the garage. ![Smile [:)]](/emoticons/emotion-1.gif)
