Yokohama said the same thing about AD07s, and even went to the point of stating "these tires could shatter if they get below 32°F!", which I never seemed to believe.

We stuck some 225/50/15 Hankook Z212 tires (200 TreadWaer, $87) onto 15x7" wheels and they look ridiculous. Hugely too wide at 9.2" section width. OK, so maybe that wasn't such a wise choice for an STS tire.

The Toyo R1R in the 215/40/16 size looks promising if we can round up some 16x7.5" wheels. So does the 205 Bridgestone RE-01R.

Who are you asking? Him? Me? That lamp?

We are looking at a 16x7.5" for STS use, and I always like to use as much tire as the wheels can effectively hold. We tried squeezing the giant 225/50/15 Hankook on a 15x7 and it looks way too big for that wheel, but I'm not about to compromise and use a 205 on that 7". Likewise, I wouldn't use a similarly narrow 205 on the 7.5" unless there wasn't another choice. I think the 215 size I noted in the post above might be a better fit on a 7.5", but maybe... maybe a 225 would work on that rim.

I don't know why we even refer to the numbers printed on the sidewalls, as they are "all over the place" and the as-measured seciton and tread widths vary wildly...

If STS didn't have a wheel width limit in addition to the tire limit, I'd go straight for the 225 max width tire and stuff an 8" or 8.5" wheel under there to mount it on, somehow.

 If you are talking to me.. I put the 205 bridgestone on the 16x7.5 wheels, as the diameter of the tire is shorter than the 225, which is a big issue for the sts civic.

As for the 16x7.5 wheels, does anyone other than SSR make a set?  I had a hard time finding a set of the SSRs.

In some ways, I hope that the Toyo is better than the Bridgestone, as they are certainly more creative in their sizes.

I ask because I was planning on going with the 225/50r16 Bridgestone, but I only have a 7" wide rim.  It's starting to sound like that may be too wide. (Car in question is a 318ti).

Is that a correct assumption?

Mebbe so on the Bridgestone, however...just for giggles lemme offer another data point...

My own experience had to do with the 225/45-15 Hankook, and it seemed to fit fine.  Tires were bought shaved and the wear was even over 15k street miles and 12 events.  With -2.5 degree the temperatures were within 5 degrees across the surface during competition.  On a warm day they pulled 1.06g consistantly and I figgered they were worth the money.  Did I mention this was on Kosei K1 15x7 wheels?

I'd reckon those tires were about as wide as the wheel could handle, but not too wide.  For reference the section width is 8.7" which is fractionally less than the Hoosier 205/50-15 with a section width of 8.9".

So mebbe I'm nuts, but I'm going to look pretty hard at the Toyo R1R 225/45-15 and hope that the dimensions are tolerable and the compound is better.  The 225/45 seems to be OK on the 7" rim for at least some manufacturers.

A little OT, but I have 15x7 wheel now and am not sure whether to get the 195/50/15 or the 225/45/15 Toyo R1R.  Is the 225 too large?  I want as much rubber as possible, but I have a feeling 225 will be pushing it on a 15x7.

Right now you have no choice as the 225/45-15 is not yet available.  Once it is, there will likely be a lot more information on how it works on various rim sizes.  At this point, its all just a guess.

You could always call Toyo and ask.  They have a customer service number on their website.  When I called, the people I spoke to were very helpful.

I just spoke to a rep at Toyo.  He informed me that the 205/15 and the 225/15's have been pushed back until Feb/April time frame.  Unless someone here has one of those uber connections looks like we might have to wait a wee bit longer.

Any others???

So my questions are........contingency aside.....where does that ol BFG KD stand these days? I have heard some folks say that Dunlop is great...better than the Stone maybe? Is there anything with more grip than the Yoko?

What about in the rain? What tire dominates? I assume the GS-D3 Goodyear is still great.....but would kill any contingency.....would someone throw the $$$ away for a win in the wet?

Cliff Notes:  R1R on all four corners, $300 for first, $200 for second, $100 for third.  Listed only for National Tours at this point.  Essentially what Bridgestone offers.
 

Awesome on the contingency :)  Now, I just need to learn how to drive...

 I ended up running the Bridgestones at the event last weekend.  I am going to run the R1Rs this weekend, and then do comparisons the following weekend at the B'ham T&T.  Anyone have data acq. stuff and want to help do comparisons?

 The toyos are definately softer, and I can't wait to try them out.

Yep - shaved they're actually pretty darn decent.  Not the top of the heap, but 215/40/16's all the way around netted a trophy in STS, and the STSL championship in 2006.  In 2007 they were on the rear of our Civic (MX's in front) and yielded another STSL championship, and a distant 2nd in STS to Jason. 

 In the rain they're _great_ - I haven't run the Goodyears like Mr. Hollis uses, but I expect the SPTs to be at or near the top... 

 Anxiously awaiting the new Kumho XS - crossing fingers and toes that at least one size will be available by April 30.  From the spec sheets I've seen, there will be a 15 and 16 size that'll work quite nicely for the STS/2 cars.

 Aha, yes, that was way back in Atwater where you had the Goodyears.  Can't argue with keeping on the same brand tire.  Did you compare the two back to back for the rain?

K-Mo may have more info, but I've seen reference to a 205/50/15 and a 215/45/16.  The 16" OD was under 23", the 15" 23.1" or so.  I don't remember the section width - 8.4" rings a bell though.
